TTC Gloucester Subway Train (Toronto)

Toronto's first subway cars used on the Yonge Subway in 1954.

The Gloucester trains like their name implies where made in Gloucester England by the "Gloucester Railway Carriage and Wagon Company". The original plan was to use trains similar to Chicago's 6000 series trains but this fell to the wayside when the TTC decided that prices of the original bidders were to expensive, forcing the TTC to open its bid to builders from the UK. While being heavy and energy-inefficient the trains were considered robust and reliable. They remained in active service until 1990 when they were finally retired.
