Windows 10 Crash at Start up: Black Screen
By ⚡ Spark ⚡
On windows 10 Rome Total War seems to not like to start up! Either I get black screen or flashes and then crashes. So heres a little guide that I put together that helped me get the game to work on this version of Windows

1st Step: Rome Total War Properties
Head over to the games Properties and click on
Set Launch Options
And type in: -ne
This allows the games border not to happen
2nd Step: Head Over To The Games Directory
In this step we need to find the games Preferences folder.

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Rome Total War Gold\preferences

Locate the file: Player

It should be empty and type in your moniters resolution.

STRATEGY_RESOLUTION:1920x1080
BATTLE_RESOLUTION:1920x1080

And paste it into the Player text file.
Save and Exit.
3rd Step: Launch The Game
The game should be a little window, This is good. We need this to happen so the game generates more needed files for the next step. Once in the menu of Rome Total War exit the game.

Go back to Romes Properties by right clicking the game in your steam library.
Go to Set Launch Launch Options and remove the : -ne
Final Step
Almost Finished

Head Back to the directory of the game

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Rome Total War Gold\preferences

And within the Preferences folder open the file: preferences.text

and scroll to the code :AA_QUALITY:AA_High and Change into AA_QUALITY:AA_OFF

This turns off antialiasing and prevents the game from crashing.

Launch the game, and edit whatever graphics settings and resolution you want but DO NOT TURN ON Antialiasing

Great guide.

I can't understand how so many are having problems with RTW and Windows 10.
I've Never had any problems with RTW, win10 x86 & x64 on new and old hardware.

In my case, just closing MSI Afterburner has been enough, game is working flawlessly now; maybe it doesn't like screen overlay softwares. Windows 10 here, all updates, with AMD graphics card and CPU.
