Starting the Game
1. On the Start screen, select a game mode: Campaign, Skirmish, or Multiplayer.
  • Tutorial: Play the tutorial to learn the basics of the game.
  • Campaign: Play in single-player mode and complete quests.
  • Skirmish: Play against AI in the map and duration of your choice.
  • Load Game: Load a saved single-player (tutorial, campaign, skirmish) game.
  • Multiplayer: Play online with your friends.

2. Select Map. Your chosen map will determine the number of players. We currently have 2P to 8P maps.

3. Select Race. Each race has a set of units with different tactical powers (melee and missile) as well as ATT/DEF properties. During the game, you can purchase more units for your armies.

4. Select Heroes. You can choose four heroes that you can play during the game. At the start of the round, you will have a starting amount of 300 gold. You can use this to awaken your heroes. Each hero has different characteristics: ATT/DEF properties, units, victory points, and number of turns to recover (if they are defeated in battle), and other special traits.

5. Click/tap Play to proceed to the Lobby where you can view the list of players and finalize the game options such as duration and difficulty.

6. Awaken your starting hero, which will appear in your starting city. You can choose one of your heroes or more and awaken them anytime if you have enough resources. If your hero lost during battle, you need to wait a number of turns before you can summon them again. You can only awaken them at cities that you own. The territory color will indicate which player owns that land.

7. Hold click/tap and drag a hero to move it around and start conquering lands, which have equivalent victory points. The first one to occupy all the territories, or has the most victory points at the end of the round, wins!
Movement and Hero Commands
1. Click/tap on your hero to view more information.

2. Move a hero by dragging the hero icon to an adjacent territory.

3. Heroes stack up when there are more than one of them in a territory. To expand them, click/tap on the blue "+" button, then click/tap on the blue "-" button to restack them.

4. When viewing hero information, choose from a variety of actions:
OCCUPY – put a territory under player control
BUILD - build or upgrade improvements
PILLAGE – collect a large sum of resources from owned territories, with the cost of making the land unable to produce for a number of turns
FORTIFY – give a defense bonus for that turn
TELEPORT – allows your Hero to teleport from one city to another
HIRE – hire units for your armies
ORGANIZE – exchange units between heroes, cities and occupied lands
AWAKEN - only accessible if Hero is within the City proper.

5. Click/Tap "End Turn" after choosing your commands. Note that you will be unable to change your commands after doing this, so be careful! During multiplayer games, you will only have a limited time to decide.
Improvements
Additional commands are available at territories that you own. Click/tap the Build button to build structures that can boost your land's victory points and also unlock new units. Every turn the number of units increase, and you can transfer them to your heroes using the Organize command.

Cards may be used to boost your troops ATT/DEF properties, build structures and more.

Cards can be sold by dragging them downwards. A "Sell Card" icon will be visible near the "END TURN" button. You'll receive the corresponding amount shown on the card.

@Godwin

well technically you have attempted to upgrade an unowned territory, hence your predicament...you were trying to be cheeky there :)

Step 5: Difficulty icons and their meanings for each player / AI player? Game manual was of no help.

I think the sequence (from what I can tell) is:
Card effects >then> Meeple/Hero + army movement >then> Meeple/Hero + army action.
Which may explain why the tower got upgraded to fort (or something) BEFORE you manage to subjugate (who uses such a word?) which is an action?
Not sure about how portals/teleport come into play though.
I think I once got caught by an enemy army while trying to escape using portal...

It's the things that are unexpected that trip me up: Like when I was 1 turn away from conquering a land with a 2nd tier tower on it. I played a fortification card (tower level +1) on it, expecting next turn to have a bigger tower on owned land. Instead, the conquer counter reset (and increased from 2 turns necessary to 3 turns necessary, tieing down my hero for 3 more turns, which was really bad news for me, and a nasty surprise.
