The starting ship and the upgraded starting gun are the best in the game. Build 5-6 battlecruisers that have a level 5 Kinetic Autogun and 2 V2 Generators, and you will crush your enemies. Here's why:

Mass determines Initiative, how soon and how often you act. Every time you act, you get to shoot or restore your power. If the enemy ship has double your Mass and Initiative, you get to shoot twice as often. The Reaper/KiPl Battlecruiser has very low mass and can get off 2-3 shots before some enemies even get to move. With 5 of them, you're hitting 10-15 times at the start of combat, and nothing can stand up to that.

The Kinetic Autogun has the best damage to Power/Mass ratio. Bigger guns cost 3x the Power to do 1.5x the damage. Lasers damage shields but are worthless after shields are down. A level 5 basic Kinetic Autogun does 6400 damage for 253 power. Nothing comes close to this.

Only weakness is that enemy Armor is very effective against it. There is any easy fix: destroy their armor module and they lose 90% of their armor. After that, you just need to have a high enough level gun to kill them. Level 5 can kill anything.

Ok, so that's why. Here's how:

Towards the start, build KiPl battlecruisers until you have 5-6 (you may want to save a slot for a support ship to haul 4 fuel tanks around). Give them 1 Kinetic Autogun each (extra guns are a waste of Mass and slow you down). I usually set their strategy to Balanced (improves Initiative and Power recharge). Upgrade the guns to Level 2 to take you through the early fights.

Put all of your Research into the Power technology to get Subgenerators with the end goal of getting to Energy Pulsar (gives you the V2, the best Power generator). When you have a generator, add it to a ship and then upgrade the gun until the next upgrade would cost too much Power to fire. Upgrades are amazing. Repeat this step until you have a level 5 gun! If you don't like having to pass your turn to recharge, you may want 2 generators per ship.

In short, with your fleet you want to:
1) Build battlecruisers
2) Give them 1 Kinetic Autogun each
3) Upgrade gun as much as Power allows
4) Research Power generators, put generator on a ship, and repeat from 3 until all ships have a pair of generators and a level 5 gun.

In each combat, focus on 1 target at a time, knock out the shield, knock out the armor (unless they're half dead after your first shot, then don't bother), and destroy their hull. I repeat, in each combat:

1) Target Hull until Shield is gone.
2) Target Armor until Armor is destroyed
3) Target Hull again until enemy ship is destroyed
4) Repeat from 1 on next enemy ship.

Battlecruisers are so fast and level 5 Kinetic Autoguns do so much damage that you don't need anything else! You can usually destroy their entire fleet before they get a single shot off, even strength 15k-30k enemy fleets. You're welcome.

Because computers can only attack position one, you can place a large ship and fill it with defense components, and the remaining five positions will be as the owner said. I cleared the customs in this way.

I kitted my ships out to the max, 4 annihillators 2 Rocket Carriers, Each annihilator had 3 lv5 Red Kinetic and a lvl 5 orange kinetic, 3 lvl5 mk3 shields, Proton Engine at lvl 2, lv5 v2 Antigrav, lv5 bullet booster, lv5 layered armour (cos they all loved hitting me with rockets) and lv5 v2 generator.
Rocket carriers had 2 Lv5 inferno rockets, Lv5 mk2 recharge beam and lv5 mk 2 shield beam and all the other gubbins for planet scavenging and raiding.

Enemy ships got 15 - 25 hits on me before i could even move, but once i did, it was Goodnight Vienna! 124,416 damage from each annihilator made short work of everything... and the rockets were not too shabby either, my setup meant that the two carriers hit as hard as one annihilator.
I had the same 6 ships from when i built them right to the end of the game, and i lost the first one in the very last fight.

So there is a fun way to do it too. :D

Hmm, Ok, the lv 5 kinetic gun works, but my ships are overweight and slow. Then again I have shield modules, you say to get rid of the shields? I also have agrav modules and proton engines. Should I get rid of any and all equipment except the guns and the power modules?

Thank you for this. Unfortunately this also confirms for me that this pretty much kicks in the knee the best part of this game: ship design and outfitting. Not a killer blow that kills the game but it can already early be seen that the system is not that good.
