PAYDAY 2 has been going for almost 5 years, and despite some mishaps with how the game got updated throughout its lifetime, it's still a great game, and the (only) best 4-player co-op heisting game.

At first, PAYDAY 2 didn't have much modding support. The developers didn't build the game with that in mind and didn't think about modability in the long run.
But determined players nevertheless found a way to sneak in modding capabilities into PAYDAY 2. Then seeing as many other players began to mod the many elements in-game, Overkill themselves gave their approval for the way modding is done and also gave a helping hand with the "mod_override" feature. And after almost 2 years, the modding scene of PAYDAY 2 is thriving with so many mods out there to enhance your heisting experience.

Below are some mods that I usually use, but I feel should be used more often. To me, they give us the must-have, quality of life features that the PAYDAY 2 developers should have put in, but now the playerbase is adding the features themselves.
Most of the mods will be BLT mods, with reason I will elaborate further down. And also some "mod_override" mods that will enhance your experience, espeically in the visual department.

There will be some terms that you might want to know to understand modding. These are not necessary, but may aid you.
Here are some terms that may help you understand this guide a bit better;

• BLT : A Lua hook mod designed for ease of use for players and modders alike. It's a tool that 'inserts' the custom script (mod) into the game, to be executed.
  
• mod_override : A directory to place all custom models/object files that will override the default one in-game, and the custom one will be used in-game instead.
  
• Mod Options : Some mods have options to customize the effects of the mod. You can access it by going into Options when in the Main Menu, then choose Mod Options to view several mods that have this capability.

SPECIAL NOTE:
BeardLib : A large mod framework that assists in some 'special' mod creation. For anyone who wants to use 'Custom' mods, especially custom heists or custom weapon/melee/mask, you just need to install this and it's ready to be used. Mods that need BeardLib usually tell the user in the mod's description.
For those of you who use PDTH HUD, this mod tool comes packaged.

To get the mods all working properly, you must prepare a plethora of things.
Or you can just skip it right to the mod list on the next section, if you already know how to do things

First, a fresh copy or clean install of PAYDAY 2. Or if you can't bother to re-download the whole thing, usually a verify integrity of the game files would make PAYDAY 2 back to it's default state e.g. the very first install (don't worry, your save file should be fine!).

Second, get the tool to hook the mod into the game. The Payday 2 superBLT does this without much hassle.
It's just a simple copy-paste to the game directory.
But make sure you already have the prerequisite tool for BLT to work (it's listed on the Installation[superblt.znix.xyz] section.
It's a must-have API to start your modding endeavor to Payday 2!

Third, get to know where you can download all the awesome mods.
There are 2 sites that I frequently visit to search for mods.
Payday 2 BLT website [paydaymods.com] that's also the host site for the Payday 2 BLT tool, have pages that showcase mod that use the tool.
Mod Workshop website [modworkshop.net] is also a good choice for searching. It hosts tons of mods for PAYDAY 2. Originally it stores a lot of skin/model mods back in the day when there's no custom script mod capability. Now it also hosts BLT mod.

Fourth, after you have downloaded a bazillion mods ready to be used, it's time to put them to good use. Usually the mod itself has an instruction readme, or the author has posted the how-to on the download site, so do give it a read.
For custom lua script mods, you just have to put it into the 'mods' folder created by the BLT tool, and the mods are ready to be used.
For mods that override model/object in-game, it usually use mod_overrides folder to do that. Just put the mod files inside the mod_overrides folder that reside in the assets folder.



Fifth, your PAYDAY 2 game is now custom modded. Just fire up the game and hope you have done everything correctly, and the game should load up properly.
(If it crashes somewhere in the game, whether before going into main menu, or in the middle of playing, high chances it's because some mod. Refer to FUBAR section below)


You can check if your mod is properly installed and running in the game by clicking at the Mod Status box that's located above the profile box in main menu
This screen is also a place to check if the mod have old version and needs to be updated, or you want to redownload the mod in case it got damaged.
By default the BLT manager will check if each mod have update at the start of the game.

The 'MODS' option are list of mod_override that are detected by PAYDAY 2
The 'LUA MODS' option are list of lua/BLT custom script mod that are detected by PAYDAY 2
The 'MOD OPTIONS' option are for changing certain aspect in a mod that support that kind of customization feature.

PAYDAY 2 has a weird system when playing a weapon's firing sounds.
Sometimes a single shot would sound like it fires 2 rounds.
This mod fixes this, by making sure the gun muzzle flare and sound matches.

PAYDAY 2 teammate AI bots are not that dumb, but they're not really that smart on some occasions. This mod tries to remedy it by altering some of their AI logic to make the AI resemble more like a actual human player than a free meat shield tank.
This mod also make the AI prioritize the most dangerous threat around them, and deal with it accordingly.

A collection of standalone scripts. Mostly made by Seven, a prolific user on the modding scene, this is a mostly custom script mod.
Things like skipping the statistic screen at the end of a heist;
automatically picking-a-card at the end of the heist;
different waypoints for each civilian condition (alerted, laying down after being shouted);
and pager, guard and/or gage's packages counter at the press of a key will help some little nifty-gritty on the game.

With update 146, AI Henchman feature seems to have made this mod obsolete, but the mod developer keeps updating this mod to add more stuff to the already existing Henchman feature.
I personally still use it because I much prefer random AI selection but each use their own signature weapon, a thing Henchman cant do yet.
The amount of damage the AI bots deal is still the same with the default weapon they originally use, so it's just an aesthetic mod.
With further update, this mod is capable to change AI's armor and what deployable bag they bring. Again, it's all just visual, aesthetic mod

Ever wanted to blow half of a tazer's head off? This mod makes it so all your guns (or some of them, based on how you set the mod) have the capability to decapitate an enemy's head, and now also limbs when they have dropped dead to the ground.

We have Full-Auto and Single firemode. Why not a Burstfire mode as well? This is the standalone version from the DMCWO mod. Enabling some weapons to have burst fire capability, if you don't mod the gun with a fixed firemode.

PAYDAY 2 limits the amount of corpses that are visible on screen to just 8 (or 16?) for performance reasons. However, players with better PC specs might still play with decent performance even if the ground is cluttered with corpses. This mod removes the corpse limit, and even lets you choose how many corpses can be kept before they start to despawn.
THIS MOD IS OBSOLETE. Overkill added this feature to the base game.

The default system to move your inventory is by clicking 'Move Item', than selecting the slot where you want to place the item. That's clunky as hell.
This mod allows you to drag & drop inventroy items. Just click and hold the item you want to move, drag it across to the slot you want it to place, then release to place it.
Drag to the number of pages to change the Inventory pages.

PAYDAY 2 default flashlight doesn't shine so much. It's more like a flashlight on the last spurt of battery power.
If you pay attention, the light emitted from flashlight has a certain effective range (and that's very short), if an NPC moves away from that range, the NPC will not be shined anymore. That's not how light works.
This mod make it so that your flashlight shines like its at full power brightness.
And any NPC will shine when the flashlight is directed at them, even from any range.
Actually this mod just widens the light emitted from your flashlight, and increased the light's brightness/intensity a bit.

Players that move a lot of hostages know the horrendous hostage movement pathing. Hostage Escort Tweak tries to fix it by making hostages move with more speed, stops only when in your close vicinity, etc.
When hosting lobbies, you can move up to 3 hostages at once. You can customize several of the mods aspect (like how many hostage you can move) by editing the lua script if you're an advanced user.
This mod announces its usage when people joining your lobby, because some deem the ability to move multiple hostages at once is cheating.

Or, if the above mod's feature is too much or blatantly cheating for you, you can try to use this one instead; Hostage Pathing Fix.
By default, the hostage will follow the player position but will not always stops where the player is. This mod makes the hostage pathing logic to always follow and stops where the player is, enabling some hostage hiding tactic.
It seems this mod is more intended for solo player, because client (that dont have this mod) that plays with host (that have this mod), will have all the hostages moved by client to follow host location.

This mod enables you to tell the AI bots to hold position with a press of a key. This kind of feature might give player several strategical advantages, like in Framing Frame day 3, AI bots can be told to hold position and guard a power box while the player do other task.
The hold position order works for Teammate AI and Jokered cops.

After CF2017 update, Overkill added a background screen on Loading, so it's not just black screen anymore.. but it's still pretty bland with just Trivia corner.
This mod changes it so that the loading screen gives some tips, tell the lobby's host and charateristic info. Just like the one in PAYDAY: The Heist did.

In order to change your lobby name, you must edit your Steam username. But it's too much hassle of alt-tabbing to Steam, go to Settings, and changing username.
This mod adds in feature so you just have to type in what tag you want your lobby to have without editing your Steam username.
For now, you must type in the Lobby Tag at a txt file in the mod folder, then save it. The tag will automatically load up in game, without recreating lobby again.

Ever play a public heist, where it's going so good with crew that knows what to do, and in the middle of the play, it just disconnect without a reason? And you can't be bothered to search the lobby again in Crime net because there are 20-ish lobby bleeping up, and you're too lazy to add the pub guy? This mod add a function so that when you go to Crime net, by a press of a key, you'll reconnect to the last lobby you have played. Quality of Life feature.

You just finish a heist, and you also finish a Side Job with it.
Claiming Side Job rewards forces you to get out from the lobby and go to Crime net to do it.
This mod adds in a button in the Lobby screen to directly take you straight to Side Jobs screen, so you won't have to quit your current lobby.

Sometimes you host a lobby, and while waiting for people to come, you alt-tab to do other stuff.
Then people join, the lobby's full, but you are still alt-tabbing.
The other player wait and wait, and then they left because host looks AFK.
You go back to your lobby, finds it empty, and goes "F**k this, I'll just join someone's lobby"
Repeat the devil cycle.
Originated from reddit request, this mod will ring a notification (in the form of infamous player sound when joining) when a player joins your lobby.
Now you know when your lobby is full!
*NOTE: for now, the mod will sound the notification, even when you're already in-game or in lobby. But the downside of this is quite small compared to the feature you got, so it's OK on my book.

PAYDAY: The Heist features a crosshair, but PAYDAY 2 doesn't. The developers maybe deem it's unnessary given player can use laser sight mod as replacement for a HUD feature in assisting player aiming.
While some player might let this slide and adjust to PAYDAY 2 gameplay style, other are quite bad or downright couldn't play at all with said feature.
Use this mod to accomodate your special need.
The crosshair is almost like the one in PAYDAY: The Heist, it changes shape according to stances and changes color when aiming at an enemy or non-threatening target.

Sometimes when you're in the middle of dominating a cops and the enemy already start surrendering, your unwary crew didn't notice it and put some lead into that dominated cops.
Denying you some free hostage or a possible jokered cops.
Give some sign that a cops is already surrendering with this mod.

Enable persistent player deployables which don't vanish when players leave or disconnect. The server still keeps track of individual player deployables so this can't be used to deploy infinite ammo bags or anything, it's just a quick fix to an annoying "feature" that leaves you at a disadvantage if someone disconnects.
Doesn't apply to sentry guns by default, but you can change that in options if you want.

This mod will make the main menu more interactive/interesting/badass by tweaking a little bit with the camera transition animation on the main menu.

Payday 2 originally only support frame rate limit up to 135 fps, which is not enough nowadays when there's monitor that can reach up to 144Hz.
This mod tweak a bit on the FPS cap logic and enable another extra of frame rate not possible before. There's now option to go to such frame rate like: 144, 150, 175, 200, 225, 250, 275, 300
WARNING:

• You must disable vsync for the larger frame rate limits (i.e. greater than your monitor's refresh rate) to have any effect
  
• Raising the FPS limit above normal levels forces your computer to work harder than it normally would, causing it to consume more power and generate more heat. Consider this carefully before you proceed to do so.

By default, when playing with Bots, player shot will collide with the bots body, but not when shooting through a real player's body in game.
This could become quite annoying when we try to shoot a target, only for the bot to walk pass our line of fire, taking our bullet.

Since update 79, the developer disabled it for no reason.

This mod gives a bunch of feature that Sentry equipment should have as default from the game, like different contour for different type of sentry, ammo, and teammate's sentry and their status.

This mod changes weapon model part visually, for example, you like AMR16 Blast from the Past foregrip look like but you want the stats of Tactical Foregrip. Simply install Tactical Foregrip and go to mod options to change the visual model of Tactical Foregrip into Blast from the Past.
Voila! You retain the Tactical FG stat but you have Blast Past FG visual model on your AMR16.

THIS MOD IS KNOWN TO BE BROKEN, I HAVENT TESTED IT, BUT IF YOUR GAME CRASHES (POSSIBLY IN A HEIST WHERE SNIPER WOULD SPAWN), TRY REMOVE THIS MOD FIRST
This mod changes how the Sniper AI logic handles. Instead of immediately shooting you on sight, the sniper will now have to focus on you, before firing. What that means is that the sniper will keep his aim onto you for a few seconds (very quick second, I think it's only between 1-2 sec), before firing.
While he is "focusing" on you, your armor will slowly start to drain and sound will start distorting (its as if the audio is being slowed down, very distinct sound), indicating that you are being locked on. The Sniper's laser sight will not be visible unless he is targeting someone.
A nice little mod to spice up how you face Sniper.

Adds a 'bullet in the chamber' effect to round count on any weapon fire that permit this kind of action. So doing a tactical reload (reloading while there's still bullet), will give the weapon it's full mag + 1 round in the chamber.

Enable customization of laser color in-the game, and also make them sync if the other player uses this mod too.

Back when Dozers were first given the ability to sprint, a bug happens that makes Dozer's attack logic to never walk, even when in proximity to the heisters.
Although this bug was reported back in November, it has yet to be fixed. This mod causes Dozers to only sprint when at a considerable distance away from the crew as originally intended.

You got to a very high Crims Spree rank, and when you cash out, you receive a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ of barrel_ext attachment that you probably have plenty already, instead of some mod that you still havent got your hand on.
This mod fixes that, so the limit of obtainable loot drop (weapon mod, mask cosmetic, etc) won't confuse the CS loot selection that you need a lot of attachment that almost reach maximum drop amount. Your CS reward variety will be more spread out with this mod.

Enhance your heisting shootout with this mod. This mod will increase the visual effect of bullet impact, explosion on a number of surfaces as well as having HD blood splatter decal, and some nice fire effect. Make the scene of your heisting rage, brutally gory.

This mod have blood spray effect that is the most demanding of all the included VFX, you can try this mod version that doesn't include the blood spray only for better performance.

Nervatel, the author of this mod updated this mod_override to support the new sentry model.
Previously this mod is for the old sentry model, as the old sentry model also have an invisible laser sight texture. Now you have more sign on where you're sentry gun is aiming.
This mod and the one on BLT no.27 have the same feature that gives the sentry laser sight.
You can choose which one you like, the BLT mod have a more bright laser sight, but I like this mod_override laser sight as the laser is not so bright and looks more realistic aesthetically.

Realistically, the tip of a weapon's barrel will smoke after a period of sustained fire. Realistically, PAYDAY 2 could have this kind of visual effect. This mod does that feat. After you fire your gun for a period of time, the barrel will smoke out in the process of cooling down. This mod gives smoking barrel vfx to both first-person and any third-person weapon model.

Smoke and fire effect in Payday 2 can hit your game fps a lot, since the default resolution of the effect is in rather large resolution.

Only effective if used by Host.
Reduce visually, the number of Grimm shotgun pellet on screen. A shotgun shoots 12 pellet/raycast, coupled that with Grimm high RoF and Akimbo OP-ness, you got the perfect recipe for a lagging game.
This mod tried to remedy that. It wont affect how the Grimm shotgun works. The game still sees the shotgun shoot 12 pellet per 1 shotgun.

From my experience, if you mix this soundpack with Hawk's it could be pretty underwhelming, since Hawk's soundpack have a more louder 'bang' sound, it'll make R6 Siege weapon sound quieter.

Time of Day
In PAYDAY 2, only a couple of heists have RNG that allows either the sun to be out, or the moon to be out.
But thanks to the thriving modding scene, this mod changes that. This mod enables time on heists to changes overtime when you play.
You might start cooking meth at night on Rats.
But play a little longer and it'll gradually changes to morning and noon. Play a little more longer, and the day will turn to night again.
Hot damn! You can also state which heist that will start at day or night, instead of the default time of day it uses.

Payday 2 when it first came out had entirely different shader that make everything look subtly different. After some updates, they updated the shader to what it looks like now.
The old shader main difference is that it render black color much better than the current one, and changed how light reflect from things.

Basically it forces PAYDAY 2 to use the Dx11 version of it's shader. Overkill design PAYDAY 2 shader with DirectX 11 feature in mind, but somehow never complete it, and it remain broken in-game. This mod fixes the broken and buggy feature and made it a playable shader.

You have installed a plethora of lua/BLT mod, mod_override, sound mod, even pdmod one.
Then when you fire up Payday 2 intent on gaming the new experience, somehow along the way, it freeze, crash-to-desktop, whatever it is, it won't let you play game.

What gives?

Most likely mod of course!
And usually, a simple removal of the problem mod will clear the problem and lets you play with ease.
Here's how to locate what kind of crash/error Payday 2 might face

Payday 2 now logs what it last processes before came to a fatal error.
To access it, its located in this location:
Fastest way to get there is bringing up the Run window (usually Windows+R), then type in "%localappdata%/payday 2" (without the double quote of course).


This will bring you to this directory, this is where payday 2 store its crashlog, saves of the game (you can also backup your save game, just another precautionary steps), and basic settings of the game. Generally you only want the files that are highlighted in red:
Execute it in notepad or any other text editor


And you'll come with this:
Generally this text contains many 'log'. 1 log consist of the date when it happens; the description of the error; what the game processes before the error hits; the thread (or line of code where it stops before error hits); and system information of your platform.
This text files basically log every crash Payday 2 encounter, and it will keep them. So if you have a lot of crash, there's got to be a lot of log in there.
I've highlighted important part of the logs and it'll be called "Hi #"
You only need to look for the most recent log (the date, above Hi 1)

• Hi 1 is the description of the error. IF the game can describe what kind of error it is, it will be listed here. Things like exception, accesss violation, etc are that description

• Hi 2 is the processes of the game before the error hits, this will give you further idea what is the game doing, and usually the last processes are the one that causing error.

• Hi 3 is the current thread the game execute just before error hits, this generally will lead you to what kind of mod that causing the crash (if it's a mod that causing it). If you're an advanced user, and know a little bit on how the mod coding work, you generally can deduce it from this 3 highlight.

BLT Framework also provide its log.
BLT Log offers more in-depth analysis specifically what your plethora of mods doing just before Payday 2 crash. So, because crashes on Payday 2 caused mostly by mods, this log will further help you finding the culprit when combined with Payday 2 crash log above.
Simply head to your BLT 'mods' folder that is located on Payday 2 directory.
Then search for a folder named 'logs'.
Inside you'll find lots of text file.
Generally, you only need the latest file, indicated by the date on the file's name (YYYY_MM_DD_log.txt)
When you open that file, it will list with you with what is the BLT framework doing while loading and executing the mod.
The log also logs in the time for every process it done,
So look for telltale sign of an error on the log description.
It'll generally tell you a mod is hitting an error or the like on the very last line of the log.

You also can ask for other's help by showing the recent crash log.


If you have found what mod is the cause of the error, try to remove it and run the game again.

When all hope is lost, and you don't know what kind of crash it is, try to revert the game back to vanilla.
Remove all BLT mod, mod_override (simply move them to other directory)
Verify your game cache (do it through Steam, it will check all the game files, and redownload everything that's not in it's original form)
And when it's done, try to launch the game again.

Then try to put in the mod one at a time, starting from the mod you knew won't cause the crash, run the game.
Do it until you came across crash when playing, then the last mod you installed is the culprit.

It's a slow way, but it's a surefire way to find which mod causes crash.




ADDENDUM:

• BLT mod nowadays usually are crashproof, simply because the tools are much better and modder have more experience. The symptom that BLT is crashing the game usually happen when in the middle of gameplay/heisting. Due to advancement of modding, now BLT mod could cause crash on the startup of the game. If this is the case, usually its the most recent mod you installed/update.
  
• mod_override can cause crash if the things it meant to override is not located there, or there's nothing to override. The symptom of the error usually when Payday 2 loads up just when its executed, or when loading up a level/heist, the game will CTD.
  
• pdmod usually won't cause crash (never in my experience), but will make some element ingame looks/sounds weird if not done correctly, so that's the symptom.
  
• Sound mod error usually are just distorted/misaligned sounds when playing.
  Sound mod can come in mod_override format or pdmod format, so refer above.
