Red Baron and Red Baron 3D were developed long ago (25 years and 18 years ago) for completely different operating systems and graphics cards. As such, old games like these don't always play nice with modern systems. We have done our best to prepare the game, but it's a big job to get them working for all systems. In that spirit, we offer this trouble shooting guide.

If you are having graphics problems with the game, here are some things you can try. One common problem is that the first screen (Main Menu) has psychedelic colors. Please try the following:

1. Before starting Red Baron 3D, right-click on your desktop, click on Screen resolution, and then leave that window open (do not close it AND do not change any settings on it). Then start Red Baron 3D normally.
   
2. If that does not work, next try this: Click on Preferences, click on Graphic Setting, click on Graphic Options. Now you can try switching to Windowed, Glide, or Direct Draw. Experiment to see which one works best on your computer.
   
3. If that does not work, try adding the "-window" option. This is explained below in the section called Problem: "Play Red Baron 3D" crashes on load
   
4. Finally, if none of the above works:
   
   1. Go to your Steam games library
      
   2. Find Red Baron and right click, select “Properties”
      
   3. Click on the LOCAL FILES tab
      
   4. Click on Browse Local Files tab
      
   5. Open the folder "Red Baron 3D"
      
   6. Right click on the file "Baron.exe"
      
   7. Select "Properties"
      
   8. Click on the tab "Compatibility"
      
   9. Click the checkbox for "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and choose Windows 95 in the list. You can also try selecting Windows XP.
      
   10. If necessary, click the checkbox for "Run in 256 colors" AND the checkbox for "Run in 640 x 480 screen resolution"
       
   11. You can also try running the game as an Admin.
       
   12. Click on Okay
       
   13. Run Red Baron 3D normally

If the game is crashing when loading, we recommend trying the following:

1. Go to your Steam games library
   
2. Find Red Baron and right click, select “Properties”
   
3. Under the ‘General’ tab, selected “Set Launch Options…”
   
4. In the text box provided, add the following exactly (including the dash): “-window”
   
5. Select “Ok.”
   
6. Select “Close” on the properties window.
   
7. Open Red Baron, in most cases the crash is solved.

Note: The game launcher and game client have separate settings. You may still select different options (including making the game full screen) that will take effect once you enter the cockpit.
Note: If you wish to attempt to make the menu screen full screen again:

1. Remove the "-window" parameter
   
2. Run the Game.
   
3. Hit and hold the "ALT" key, then hit the "Enter" key

When this happens, we recommend that you switch the compatibility mode of the program to Windows 98. Instructions can be found here:
