Introduction & Gameplay
Hello everyone! This is my first attempt at a walkthrough, so please bear with me if there are any mistakes/issues! This walkthrough will be based on my playing of the Steam (PC) release of Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star- Dove, Actually Edition in English. The main content shouldn’t vary between this edition and the normal one, so don’t worry!

Hatoful Boyfriend: Holiday Star is the Christmas-themed sequel to the Hatoful Boyfriend visual novel/dating sim, where the player makes choices throughout the story in the hopes of romancing a variety of birds.

The gameplay of Holiday Star is the same as the first game: left click/spacebar to advance the text, left click on your chosen decision to select, ESC to access the menu (with Save, Load, Preferences, and Title options), and a small button in the top left corner toggles the Skip Text function.

This walkthrough may contain spoilers, so please refrain from reading ahead, or please choose another walkthrough if this is a problem for you.

This guide is based upon my original version hosted on my wordpress blog (WingedAsarath).
The Menu
Holiday Star has several different mini-games and activities, Holiday Star has several different mini-games and activities, including unlockable short episodes, a CG gallery, and mock radio broadcasts.

The Main Menu options are:

  • New Game – Takes you to another menu to choose which area of the game to play.
  • Load – Lets you load game data from a save slot.
  • Gallery – Allows you to view the CGs (graphics) you have collected.
  • Radio – A series of shorts in the form of a ‘radio’ broadcast hosted at St. PigeoNation’s.
  • Quit – Exit the game.
The New Game menu has some more options. There are four banners on the screen. When you first play the game, only the first (red) banner is available to select. As you complete one banner, a new one is unlocked. These are the main episodes of the game: short stories with a few options to choose from as you go through.

  • Banner 1 – Red Tree – Christmas Thieves Attack
  • Banner 2 – Grey Lightning – Fallen Chronicles – Absolute Zero
  • Banner 3 – Black Moon – The Day the Night Slept (-Dazzling Night on Dreaming Star-)
  • Banner 4 – Plain Black – [Title Unknown]
In the bottom right corner, there is a symbol resembling a Japanese shrine. This will lead you into a character select menu, where you can play several short shrine-themed stories.

After playing some of the main episodes, extra symbols will appear on the bottom right corner. These are short episodes, which have no choices to make within them. I will mention when these unlock during the walkthrough.
Main Walkthrough
1 – MAIN EPISODES

1.1 – Christmas Thieves Attack

The options you choose here don’t seem to matter much, as I chose completely different options on both playthroughs and the ending was the same. I will, however, provide a brief walkthrough as some choices do give you extra little scenes. The choices you make do not appear to affect CGs.

Maybe we should leave?

→ Stop by the furniture section [scene with Kazuaki]
→ Stop by the clothing section [scene with Ryouta]
→ Leave [advances to next scene]

Where to first?

→ The library [scene with Nageki]
→ The council room (if you choose the library, this scene will play after regardless)

I need to stop the thieves’ tank!

→ Fist of the Teenage Girl
→ Mailbox Attack
(Choose either, it doesn’t seem to make a difference.)

1.2 – Fallen Chronicles – Absolute Zero

This story only has one choice, quite late on, but 2 of the 3 options lead to a game over screen.

“A single flower…”

→ Vivid in the gravel lot! [GAME OVER]
→ Shredded by the BB gun’s rage! [Correct choice]
→ Brilliant in the dark alley! [GAME OVER]

At this point, the short episode Legumentine’s Chronicles (heart symbol) should unlock.

1.3 – The Day the Night Slept (-Dazzling Night on Dreaming Star-)

Again, this story only has one decision to make, but once again you can also get a game over at this point. But it has pretty watercolour art!

What should I do?

→Right Golden Lightning Spiral Kick [GAME OVER]
→ Legendary Left Tempest Uppercut [Correct choice]

Completing this story will unlock the short episode Midnight Attack of the Nightmare (cross symbol).

1.4 – [Title Unknown]

This story has a few choices in it, and all of them have game over options. By now you’ll have realised that these four stories are all connected, and here we have the final culmination of all the mysteries! By this point I highly recommend that you have completed all of the original Hatoful Boyfriend game, including BBL.

Some of the ‘game overs’ in this story don’t have the usual reaper scene you may be used to. I highly recommend playing through every option in this game regardless, for true 100% completion. I also cannot guarantee that certain CGs or other extras will not unlock without them, as I played through all options available when going through each story.

Persuasion to maximum!

→ Believe in (Character Name)! [GAME OVER]
→ What is “special”? [Correct choice]

I should…

→ Go for it! [GAME OVER]
→ Play it safe [Correct choice]

Which one should I choose?

→ Use garnet [GAME OVER]
→ Use lapis lazuli [GAME OVER]
→ Use topaz [Correct choice]

At this point, you should have unlocked two more side stories, Albert’s Secret (feather symbol) and Preliminary Inspection (bird symbol). You should also have filled most of the gallery. As a nice note, the banner for the last story will also have turned into a pleasant cloud-filled sky.

To unlock the final side story, The Day the Night Slept (After After), make sure you have read all of the other side stories (including the shrine ones) and all of the radio episodes.

2 – SHRINE VISIT STORIES

These are short stories with no choices in them. There are 8 to choose from: Ryouta, Sakuya, Okosan, Kazuaki, Yuuya, Nageki, Shuu, and Anghel.

Selecting a character from the route select screen then gives you two options: Birdie Lovin’ With Birds (the normal avian avatars), or Like Any Human Dating Sim (with the human avatars for the bird characters teased in the original Hatoful Boyfriend game).

These stories all seem to center around a trip to the shrine.

The achievements for this game are all fairly simple and self-explanatory. Achievements for reading short episodes and shrine visit stories can be unlocked using the skip function to speed through the story if desired.

The King Said
Read all of the King's picture book.
To get this, read through all of the picture book images (once unlocked) in the Gallery. They are located on the second page of the Gallery, in a vertical list of light blue boxes.

Happy New Year!
Get to the end of the short episode "Pigeon Shrine Visit".
Please note, the achievement for reading these only unlocked for me after I had read all of the stories in both formats (birds and humans). As I read through them with human avatars first, I cannot be sure if reading through in both versions, or reading through the bird versions caused the achievement to unlock.

I went through the short episode "Pigeon Shrine Visit" with bird avatars first, and the "Happy New Year!" achievement didn't unlock until I also went through the stories with human avatars. So, you do have to go through both versions of each story but the order is irrelevant. Nice guide!
