Planetside 2 Tactics: Sundie Dusting
By Wurm and 1 collaborators
Hello all, this is Soupwerfer, and I wanted to give an idea for destroying sunderers that has, in fact, worked pretty well for me. I call it Sundie Dusting, as opposed to Sundie Busting. The idea behind this tactic is to surprise attack sunderer positions. This will be seen as mostly suicidal by enemies and allies alike, but it is attacks like this that make battles move. Below, I'll elaborate about what you will need and what you should do.

Equipment
First things first, one will need a liberator. Equipment is as follows:

-Fire Suppression is ideal, although afterburners will certainly work well for a quick approach. Fire suppression will help save your life, though, because if you do survive this, you liberator is likely to be on fire, and liberators that are on fire actually appear to lose any and all vertical thrust.

-Composite Armor is the best for this. Stealth may help you make a successful approach while avoiding fire, but the objective is to stay alive as long as possible under presumably sustained AA fire.

-Precision Bomber Airframe or High-Speed Airframe are good choices. Precision bomber allows you to make the quick stops necessary to get into position with a minimum of flailing or weird maneuvering, while High-speed allows you to get to your target with a minimum of getting shot at.

-Pilot’s gun is really a matter of personal opinion. The TankBuster or the Vector can be used for shooting at the sunderer while on approach, then turning to allow the other turrets to start firing, while the Spur might be able to target the sunderer if you are at the right angle, allowing you to lay down fire as well.

-Belly gun is the Duster, as the name of this strategy implies. The general opinion of this weapon is that it is essentially useless, but I have found that it works exceptionally well for exactly what its description says: close range carpet bombing. The reason why most liberator pilots hate this weapon is because it is wildly inaccurate, and thus useless at the long ranges that most liberators like to fly at. Utility items for this weapon are personal choice, because magazine size may allow the gun to sustain fire for longer, while reload speed may allow the thing to get back into the action faster when the magazine runs out. Thermal Optics are a good choice.

-Tail gun is recommended to be the Bulldog. If one is worried about A2A fire, then you can go with your favorite AA gun, but the Bulldog is good for laying down the hurt on the ground targets. Again, utility items for this weapon are your personal opinion, but Thermal Optics are recommended.
Strategy
The strategy is as follows:

-Locate your target, but do not engage. Scout around and find the enemy’s Sundie, and make sure your gunners know the location as well. Make sure it isn’t underneath something, like inside a garage. If it is, this will make it significantly harder to kill.

-When you are ready to approach, do so. Try to keep various things (rocks, mountains, etc) in the way while doing so to avoid fire.

-Fly to it and pull into a hover about 50 meters above the sunderer, and order the barrage. The Duster gunner focuses on the sunderer itself, but because of its wide cone of fire, it will also hit the infantry around the sunderer as well. The Bulldog gunner focuses on infantry, and occasionally can shoot the sunderer itself when it doesn’t have much else to do.
Tips and Tricks
-The ultimate idea behind this maneuver is to also kill the people around the sunderer while still damaging the sunderer itself. This is why I suggest the Duster, because of its carpet bombing abilities. The other belly guns aren’t as effective at carpet bombing, but are instead good for precision damage. You won’t kill the sunderer as fast as, say, a Dalton would when sporting a Duster, but you will also kill the infantry around it, which helps your survivability. I’ve found that the Duster works very well for its intended purpose, and thus, I recommend it.

-You will be flying low, and since a lot of the well placed and important sundies will be hiding in rough terrain, there is a good chance that a light assault will attempt to C4 you. So, keep an eye out!

-Survivability is a must. Sundies only cost 200 resources. Liberators cost 450, as much as an MBT. If your target sundie is home to the entire enemy faction, then don’t engage, because you probably won’t be able to destroy it before dying. Also, don’t try this maneuver in heavily contested or enemy controlled airspace, especially when you are sporting the Bulldog as the tail gun.

-Be fast. The big key to this maneuver is the shock and awe effect. The enemies have to not know you are coming so they will be caught at a disadvantage. Sundies that are being effectively pushed by your team are not good targets, because everyone there will be ready for an attack. The enemy has to be lulled into thinking that the sundie is their safe zone before you attack, so they will be sitting there with their pants down and their weapons unloaded while drinking tea and talking about the gawdawful weather we have here on Auraxis.

-Don’t be afraid of lock on rockets. Funnily enough, most heavies, when confronted with your liberator sitting on their sundie, will pull out lock on rockets and sit there waiting for the little red square to turn green before firing. This gives you a large amount of time to blow up everything before they actually shoot.
