Let me now refer you to one of the loading-screen comments of the game:
"The US Military does not condone the killing of unarmed combatants, but this isn't real, so why should you care?"
In my eyes, this one single sentence explains all about 'harsh and unpleasant situations'. Of course after some years, I have come to this understanding that this game is merely inspired by Heart of Darkness so that the setting and characters may (and perhaps are) different than those in the novella. Nevertheless, it is a gem that cannot be experienced in any other medium, so why do you guys stop at a certain point? Indeed, in the end, it all depends on the player; in other words, to finish it or not is not prescriptive.
