It can be simplistic, you can't tell the villagers to anything specific, only build stuff and the villagers AI takes over, but it can be challenging. You really need to place everything well or else your economy will fall flat. I'm having fun, just don't expect an economy builder with high control. Think Settlers II (which the game was developed by some of the Settlers II team) UE4 works great for this game.
