Soldier is an excellent beginner class. Everyone should learn to play it to learn fundamentals of TF2. However there a few obvious things that people miss or don't ever realise. This guide is here to help that.

FIND HEALS
The first thing you must do is find a medic or learn a map's health pack spots.

Strategies for finding a medic:
  • protect him
  • wear expensive cosmetics
  • wear a medal earned from playing in a competitive league
  • land an airshot and make sure the medic lays witness to it.
Remember, confidence is key here.

You need to make that fuccboi think you're a big strong man whose gonna pound him after you pound the enemey team

Health Packs
Just explore the map. Playing by packs when trying to hold ground while you wait for your team to get in position is a good way to keep healthy.

Formulating a rollout that crosses path with healthpacks is a good idea if you are trying to catch up to your team after respawning. Remember you wanna show up healthy to a fight so you can make your medic wet and get him/her/xir to heal you.

ADDITONAL TIPS
Remember as a soldier being pocketed with a medic you have a responsibility to keep that ♥♥♥♥♥ on leash. Primarily you will wanna find the enemy ♥♥♥♥♥ medic and smash them.

Try not to bomb away from your medic unless you know he will be safe, is already backing out, or someone else will be there to protect him. Alternatively if your medic is a complete healsIut they can commit to your bomb and chase you to reattach.

Another important tip to remember is how to handle yourself on ubers. This comes with experience, time, and varies from situation to situation.
Things to do while ubered:
  • Take ground (move up and push into the enemy)
  • Find the enemy medic and kill them so they will not push with an uber into you
  • Destroy an sentry nest
  • Focus frags/damage
THE GROUND IS YOUR ENEMY
Splash
Aim like your intent is to destroy the ground beneath your enemies feet!
Remember your stock rocket launcher has Splash!
TF2 is a game of area control, you need to think about preventing your enemies movement more than about killing them. Zone with your rockets!
The ancient adage "shoot feet get kills" will never fail you as a soldier.

Environment
Chokes: narrow passages that the enemy must pass through. Aiming at these can deter your enemy from moving foward, or should they choose to walk through them you can net some damage by rocket splash.

Ceilings, walls, obstacles, all manners of close-quarters can be your ally:
Sometimes you don't have to shoot a rocket at your enemy, but instead at something near them. The splash damge will reach them if they are nearby. It can be easier to shoot a stationary target near your enemy instead of a fast moving target that is your enemy.
HIGH GROUND
Because being high up makes you harder to hit.
While high up you can look down and aim at more ground beneath your enemy. Typically this makes shots easier.

If your enemy chooses to bomb you or close the distance you can typically just counter jump and shoot them while they are beneath you again or you can simply back away or fall off the high ground to create distance again.

Alternatively if you have heals on you just tanking shots and keeping the high ground is a choice as well.

Sometimes you do have to think while playing the solly man.

SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
Abuse unlocks

Primaries
  • You may want to change your primary rocket launcher do handle the challenge before you.
  • Sentry nests can be taken out with the Direct Hit. Make space safe and spam a sightline on the gun.
  • Crowd control or Chokey maps can be utilized with the Beggar's Bazooka
  • If you don't have a medic to heal you or you plan on putting presence rather than killing then the black box is a good choice.
  • The airstrike combined with the parachute make you a very annoying soldier to deal. This is good for creating distraction for your team and excels on maps with lots of turns and high grounds to make easy escapes and entrances.

Secondaries
Equip gunboats if you plan on being on the move and bombing more often than zoning.
But never forget your shotgun!
For those with the aim needed the shotgun expediates kills.
If you are a ground bound soldier who is protecting his healslut then the shotgun will give you extra shots needed to save him from pesky fraggers.
BANG BANG

Lastly many of your banners have use depending on your playstyle. Remember to play cautious to build the charge then back up and make sure your team is nearby when you blow your banner!

WHEN TO ZONE, WHEN TO BOMB
Zoning
If your team is not up, nor foward or in position then bombing may not be the best option, usually follow up damage by a team mate or bombing a distracted enemy engaged in a fite with your team mate is what makes a bomb succesful or safe.

When your team is not in play then zoning to control enemy movement is an option. Find a choke and spam into it or keep ur distance and fire rockets from a distance.

Alternatively finding a hide spot can be just as strong when by yourself. Find a perch high up or a sneak spot, around a corner or hidden behind cover. Then when you catch the enemy off gaurd unload your rockets.

Lastly working a choke. When at a stalemate in which both teams are in position, usually contesting a choke, it is best to get tanked with heals and output damage. Don't commit throught the choke till the damage is good and you are loaded up.

Bombing
There are many reasons to bomb, howerver the goal of a bomb varies and is nuanced.
  • to pick 1 class or player that matters, such as a medic with uber or a carry.
  • to make distraction so that the enemies attentinon is focused on you. Usually you wanna bomb past your enemies onto a healthkit or safe space such as high ground.
  • Bombing into crowds when your team is nearby to follow up is good.
  • Bombing 1 enemy when you are fully loaded up and healthy
Bombs should usually have justification and goal rather than occur offhand and haphazardly. However in the heat of the moment sometimes you react before you think.
INTIMIDATION
Getting inside your opponents head is an aspect of any competition or battle; Mind games.
Smack Talk: Talking trash to irritate can force your opponent to play aggressive, this enables you to bait your enemies movement.

Bind Spam: learn to make keybinds and spam them in chat. The weak pay mind to the chat, placing sentiment on complete's stranger's words without any evaluation of worth.

Harrasment: Focusing a player can make him scared and change the way he plays. Find the weak links and establish dominance. For strong players learn their habits and quirks.

Silence: Not replying to anything your foe says can distract them just as much. Getting no reaction is failure.

EXTRA
fps config
These lower your graphical settings and can degrade visual quality but the benefit of having more frames per second outweights this.

Simply google "tf2 fps config" or "tf2 comanglia config", the configs on http://clugu.com/tf2mate/ are outdated but still have convenient infrastructure.

internet connection
Make sure to know your download and upload speeds (speedtest.net)
Playing wired into the modem is better than wi-fi, wi-fi can fluctuate especially with more users on the network

Check your pings on on the server and use the net_graph to see if you are getting choke. Lower your rate if you getting constant choke.

Also turn off your torrents and stop downloading porn.

Reading the situation is really key to winning. Knowing when to agress and when to play passive. Typically just pay attention to where your team is first (hit tab to see the scoreboard lots). Once you know where your team is you'll know what the right play to do is with time and experience.

Hats don't make the man, but they do get you medics
