The Importance Of Multiclassing
By anti
This guide explains the importance of playing more than one class in TF2.

If you're easily offended, I advise not reading this. Three angry spy mains got triggered so be warned! Lots of salt in the comments!

The Importance Of Multiclassing:
Have you ever heard the term: “What class do you main?” You probably have. What the person means by that, is that you’ve chosen one of out the nine classes to play.

Now I don’t know who came up with the fact that you need a main, but I disagree with needing one. It gives you a limit on what you can do with your skill. People say it’s kind of odd to not have a main but I respect people who know how to play more than one class well. It expands your game sense and you learn how your counter works and thinks in depth. You can also build on your skill by playing all the classes.

The people in the comments have complained a lot about me saying how I think it's bad to have a main, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying it's good to have experience in playing most classes but you can always specialize in one.

By playing all these classes, your knowledge on how players work can increase a lot. So today I'm here to explain why it's important to multiclass.

Just A Note...
I don't know how many times I'm going to have to say this to bring my point across. Having a main is NOT BAD and I never said it was. The goal of the Guide was to explain why you should play more than one class, I never said why you should play all the classes and never specialize in one. There is no need to get super upset in the comments and write about how ♥♥♥♥♥♥ of a person I am just because I said something that you didn't like.

Back to what I was saying, this guide's purpose is to bring a broader perspective - not to trigger anyone. I have no bad intention and I never said having a main is "bad." I encourage specializing/maining one class. So now that I explained what my intentions were, you don't have to get upset in the comments. You never had to listen to me when you started reading this and so there's no need for me to listen to what you have to say. And I think that's very fair.

And yes, someone brought up a good point about some classes not having counters due to the game mechanics changing. For example, The Dead Ringer. Pyros used to be counters to Spies but now they can walk away freely with it while not worrying about the Pyro. Do keep that in mind.
Why Would You Play Multiple Classes?
I said it a few times but I'll say it again. It's NOT BAD to have a main. You can specialize in/main a class and why would I think that's bad? I don't. I'm simply just trying to help people expand their game sense and knowledge. No need to get so upset about it.

Learning how to play more than one class is important. You get most out of the game when you experience how to play as other classes. Sure you're a great Soldier and everyone appreciates it, but why restrict yourself to just that one class? You might be thinking that I'm saying it's bad to have a main, but that's not what I'm saying. I'm saying that it's better to have more gamesense and knowledge than just knowing how to play one class. Every situation has a different need, learning to play a class to adapt to that need really helps. Playing another class could also help you upgrade your skill for another (This isn't true in all cases but diversity is a powerful tool) In short, playing all classes is adds a lot more joy to the game and is so much more helpful to your team.

You may find a class that you enjoy more than any others, but just keep in mind that you don't necessarily need to play only that one class for the rest of your TF2 career.

As an example, I realized much later that when I started playing Medic competitively that I knew what would happen in the game. Where the Spy would be, where the Sniper would be peeking and when the Soldier or Scout would jump me to get a force or a drop. It soon becomes natural and you'll know when something will happen and you'll know how to deal with it.
Pros About Multiclassing
  • You'll know how to counter someone or multiple people effectively by changing your class or your gameplay.

  • You'll know how to play the class you want to when you feel like it.

  • You won't be that bad at all classes except one.

  • You'll be very desirable as a Main or Substitute for an HL or a 6s team.

  • Your skill in no matter what form will improve if you play all the classes. Your aim as well as your movement will improve.

  • Your gamesense will be so much better in terms of playing competitively.

  • You'll have different play styles and you'll be able to adapt to how your team plays pretty easily.
Information on the 9 Mercs
Every class has their own role and characteristics that you have to keep in mind while you play TF2. So I decided to show you the stats and information on all the classes in this game so you're aware of them. Down below are the classes and their role in competitive games and certain things everyone should know about them. Their strengths and weaknesses, and their purpose.
Scout

Basic stats & abilities: 125HP, Fastest of all classes (133%) /Double-jump & cap points faster than any other class.

Roles: Plays on the flank, does lots of clean up work and caps points/carts faster than most classes.

COUNTERS: Engineers, other Scouts, Heavies and maybe Soldiers. Possibly a Sniper.

Mindset: A Scout in competitive will attempt to hold flank with his Soldier which means that he'll be watching and locking down a certain area that his team can't deal wtih at the moment. He is able to get Medic picks if the situation is played right. He picks off other flank classes that try to get to his combo.

Soldier

Basic stats & abilities:: 200HP, Second Slowest (80%) /Rocket jump and provide area buffs to teammates.

Roles: Plays on flank, puts out lots of damage and can get to places faster than most classes. Is a potential candidate to suicide for a Medic. Able to play offensively and defensively.

COUNTERS: Pyros, Heavies, Snipers, Demomen, Soldiers and possibly Scouts and Engineers.

Mindset: Soldiers will hold flanks with his team's Scout. He's able to lock down areas effectively if someone tries to pass through. Most of the time if a team needs to get a force or a drop on the other team's Medic, the Soldier will most likely bomb in and suicide for the Medic.

Pyro

Basic stats & abilities: 175HP, Average Speed (100%) /Reflect Projectiles, put out teammates and neutralize ubers

Roles: Protects the Medic, Engineer, and its combo, spy checks and keeps opponents away from its combo.

COUNTERS: Heavies, Demomen, Scouts, Snipers, Engineers.

Mindset: Pyros usually stick close to Engineer and Medic. Pyro is very good at reflecting spam and keeping opponents away from its combo. He'll check for Spies and its able to neutralize a Medic's ubercharge.

Demo

Basic stats & abilities: 175HP, Below-Average Speed (93%) /Sticky Jumps and Area Denial/Pushes

Roles: Is best for destroying sentries and putting out massive amounts of damage. Is able to get to places quickly by sticky jumping.

COUNTERS: Scouts, Snipers, Soldiers, Pyros and Spies.

Mindset: Destroy sentries and kill everything. Put out massive damage when needed. Doesn't necessarily protect Medic, but he's there to carry out ubers when the team needs to make a push.

Heavy

Basic stats & abilities: 300HP, Slowest Speed (77%) /Spread damage out and keep flank classes away

Roles: Is able to spread damage out. Very effective in close range fights and is most effective and protecting Medic or his team mates from bombing soldiers and whatnot.

COUNTERS: Spies, Snipers, Scouts, Demomen

Mindset: Protects his team's Medic, and kills flank classes if they get too close. He's able to take out sentries as well but not as effectively as Demo. He's more of a cleanup class. He's able to spread damage out.

Engineer

Basic stats & abilities: 125HP, Average Speed (100%) /Buildings and Defence

Roles: Main core of defense, able to play offensively and defensively. Able to bring people into battle faster and provides ammo and healing.

COUNTERS: Spies, Soldiers, Demomen, Heavies and Snipers.

Mindset: Engineer is the core of defense. The sentry gun has high damage output and can kill stray players. It defends objectives and halts pushes. So if that gun is active the enemy team cannot advance without getting repelled. That's why in the vast majority of cases a uber is needed to destroy a sentry. On offense, Engineer can play however he wants really. Mini sentries give him many options on playstyle.

Medic

Basic stats & abilities: 150HP, Above-Average Speed (107%) /Healing and Ubercharges

Roles: Heals his combo and players that are in need. Is able to build uber in 50-60 seconds and can be invincible for 8 seconds if deployed right (Stock MediGun). Most important class for offensive pushes. Can use uber for offense and defense.

COUNTERS: Everything.

Mindset: Heal his combo and players that need it. Giving buffs to people who need it as they go into battle. Check his back for spies when his pyro is down and be aware of Soldiers and Scouts. Watch for Snipers as well and try to avoid bad situations. Use your ubercharge when your team needs it and POP IT DON'T DROP IT.

Sniper

Basic stats & abilities: 125HP, Average Speed (100%) /Long range instant kills and neutralization of pushes.

Roles: Able to kill other Snipers who are trying to kill his team’s Medic. Can get important picks from across the map. Able to drop a Medic with full ubercharge and stall a push and gain more time.

COUNTERS: Snipers, Spies, Scouts and Soldiers.

Mindset: Stays close to people that are able to fight in close range. He prioritizes important classes like the other Sniper and Medic. A Sniper in competitive will normally take out the classes that pose the biggest problems like Snipers, Medics, Heavies and Demomen.

Spy

Basic stats & abilities: 125HP, Average Speed (100%) /Assassination and Misdirection

Roles: Able to get important picks, and sap sentries to destroy the other team’s defense. Can pick off Snipers that are proving to be trouble.

COUNTERS: Pyros, Scouts and mostly every other class that knows how to Spy Check.

Mindset: Sap the sentry that's stopping his team from moving forward. Also getting Medic picks are incredibly important as well as Heavies and Demos. Killing Sniper may also be incredibly important if his team is struggling with him.

Last Words...
In the end, after playing multiple classes, you'll learn how to handle situations and counter them efficiently. Your game sense will improve and you'll learn the exact mechanics of the game and its players. It won't be so difficult anymore and it'll become instinctual. You won't panic in certain situations if you know how to handle them well. This is why I highly recommend learning how to play multiple classes. I do hope you found this guide useful and knowledgeable.

Editor's Note
It's been awhile since I've made a new guide so I thought now would be a great time, considering I'm doing lots of things involving competitive right now. As you can tell, I'm a strong believer in multi classing. I also believe people are capable of having mains but it makes me kind of irritated when I see that person is only knowledgeable on that one class. Plus, having more than one class to play is so much fun.

Do keep in mind that all of this you have read is what I think people should do and I'm not saying that what you're doing is bad. It's just me trying to help people get into the game more instead of one certain aspect of it.

Thank you for reading and have a great day!

Thank you very much Brigadier for helping me with my content and keeping it interesting. I'm a terrible writer and thank you so much for keeping me in line with it. <3

It was a pleasure and remember, Variety is the spice of life! (Had to) -Brigadier

Also another thing, there's a difference between constructive criticism and just being plain offensive. Hopefully you think about that when you type your comment. This guide isn't here for anyone to talk ♥♥♥♥ on, so if you post something that's trashy and immature it will most likely be deleted. No matter how many times you post I'll probably end up deleting it. Lots of people have been getting upset over things that are stupid and I'm not gonna waste my time responding.

I can't fucking belive how bad of a person you are, having a main is bad? Wow, that's just fucking dumb.

1. You are just to bad at all of the classes to make this type guide. I destroyed you in every class on my professional mge server.

2. You don't have enough hours to make these claims. You only have around 2500 hours. I have 900000000.

3. Ur rude.
