Blind Trait Mod [b41]

Omschrijving
Note on b42: This mod relied on the ability to enable some levels of night vision to the character through reusing the effects of cat's and reuse of a specific overlay. New lighting system from b42 with pitch black areas and night makes it impossible to maintain that feeling of "blind can see around themselves" (at least from my initial attempts to migrate and fix the mod for b42). This will have to remain a b41 mod until further notice.

Features
Game restart required after first mod loading.

The game features 5.1 sound, Vo-Ip, and a lot of ambient sounds like zombies footsteps, etc. So I decided to create a trait to play as a blind character! I also worked on a shader to improve the blind character experience by darkening any entities on the map: players, zombies, items.

As a Blind character you:
  • Benefit from +18 points from the Blind trait
  • Have a reduced seeing frame
  • Can see zombies behind your back
  • Can't read any books
  • Use callouts to increase detection area through Human Echolocation[en.wikipedia.org]
  • Shaders support for more immersive experience
  • Blind Trait is no longer mutually exclusive with Deaf (you are going to have a bad time)
  • Blind and Deaf characters cannot use Human Echolocation

Shaders

Grayscale shaders for blind characters are now supported natively. But you need to restart the game after first mod load. This is caused by the fact that PZ does not reload shaders file when mod reloads.

If you want to benefit from the dark shadows on characters, follow the instructions inside the "shaders_instructions.txt" file in the mod folder. It should be located there: yourSteamFolder/steamapps/workshop/content/108600/546189296/mods/BlindTraitMod/ or read the shorter instructions below.

To activate black shadow outlines 1. Launch the game and make sure the mod is enabled 2. Then quit the game 3. Go to the mod folder: yourSteamFolder/steamapps/workshop/content/108600/546189296/mods/BlindTraitMod/media/shaders/ 4. Rename the the "basicEffect-off.frag" file into "basicEffect.frag" 5. Launch the game and play a blind character (Don't forget to pick the trait !) To deactivate black shadow outlines 1. Go to the mod folder: yourSteamFolder/steamapps/workshop/content/108600/546189296/mods/BlindTraitMod/media/shaders/ 2. Rename the the "basicEffect.frag" file into "basicEffect-off.frag" 3. Launch the game and play a normal character without being annoyed by the shader

If you use entities shaders and want to play on multiplayer, server host has to disable the "Other > DoLuaChecksum" option because these specific shaders are considered as code change.

Upcoming plans

For next releases I want to:
  • Find how to make the entities shaders dynamics just like the grayscale ones
  • Dynamically change the callout texts for blind characters
  • Fix emote wheel not triggering echolocation
  • Remove access to in-game map for blind characters
  • Braille books implementation and distribution

For those who, like me, are bothered by the fact that darkness/night affects brightness of the area of "vision" (when it shouldn't), I invite you to check out the mod "Darkvision". When I play blind trait, I add this mod and this trait using debug after loading the game. This way the character's area of "vision" actually behaves the same at night or in dark areas which is much more realistic and immersive imho. Enjoy ! And thanks for this blind trait mod !
