Quick guide on how to get auto map mod working with steam integration.
What you need. Notepad++, winrar/7zip, wizardry 6, and wizardry 6 automap mod.

1. Install Wizardry 6 on steam.
2. Download Wizardry 6 Auto map mod 1.2 from moddb.com or follow this link http://www.moddb.com/mods/wizardry-6-automap-mod/downloads/wizardry-6-automap-mod-12
3. Extract Wiz6AutoMapMod12 to a folder.
4. Go into the DosBox folder, and copy everything but the file named 6.conf.
5. Go to your steam install of Wizardry 6. There is a folder named dosbox_windows. Paste everything that was copied. You will be prompted to copy and replace. Do that, and you are almost finished.
6. Go back to the Wiz6AutoMapMod12/DosBox folder. Open 6.conf with notepad++. Copy the following lines:

[automap]
enable=true
show_tooltips=true
hide_in_dark_zones=true
width=512
height=512

7. Now go to your steam install of wizardry 6, and go open the dosbox_windows folder. There is a file named dosbox_wizardry6.conf. Open that with notepad++, and paste the lines you copied at the very bottom.

8. The last change you want to make is make the game launch in a window. Go to the top of dosbox_wizardry6.conf, and change fullscreen=true to fullscreen=false.

You now have installed the automap mod, and will work from your steam game library. The only thing that will not work is the steam overlay. Steam overlay does not work in dosbox.

To optimize further, which is completely optional. I would recommend that you change the windows resolution to values that you feel comfortable with. Also, in the auto map configuration, you can opt to turn tooltips off, which gets rid of some of the sound glitches that the tooltips introduce when you hover over them too fast multiple times.

If your screen goes black but you still hear sound after turning off fullscreen then its possible that its trying to correct to an impossible aspect ratio. Under [render] set aspect to false, if it doesn't fix your issue then its likely something to do with the scaler software. set it to another one of the provided possible values; none, normal2x, normal3x, advmame2x, advmame3x, advinterp2x, advinterp3x, hq2x, hq3x, 2xsai, super2xsai, supereagle, tv2x, tv3x, rgb2x, rgb3x, scan2x, scan3x. One of those should work.

I tried doing this and while I did get the map to work, I keep hearing a small "oww oww, bang" in the bankground whenever I start the game, I turned off the tooltip and it did not help.

Lovely addition and I did get it working with a little tweaking. Also a bonus - when I hover my mouse over my characters I can see health and spell points - Nice!!
For those having problems, there is a key line about changing the conf file in the readme (dosbox_wizardry6.conf) by changing the output line to opengl. I am using the settings below and my window is a nice size:

windowtitle=Wizardry 6: Bane of the Cosmic Forge
fullscreen=false
fulldouble=true
fullresolution=desktop
windowresolution=1280x1024
output=opengl

Plus in the render section:
frameskip=0
aspect=true
scaler=hq3x

Maybe not as nice as Duam, but darn close for EGA :D

Got the automap mod to work but how do i scale the tiny window for playing? any help much appreciated.

Worked in linux mint. Aside from following the rules above then using proton, change the output=overlay to output=surface in dosbox_wizardry6.conf file

So this worked on Steam Deck with no issues in desktop mode. It also booted in steamOS but the mouse pointer was glitching out.

Desktop mode was all good though...you way want to tweak the window sizes.

I used the directions provided in the original post in this thread and used Proton 7.0-6.

I was searching for a way to get some portable automapping going for this game and this mod seems like the best option as I can't seem to get Desktop Cartographer to sync with this game ob the Deck.

Works on linux, you have to install the mod through wine and run the game with proton. Same goes for the cosmic forge editor.

Original steps didn't work. Taking the steps described my chameleon failed to open the game at all.

EDIT:
I was going to give up (i'd messed with this quite a bit last night too), but decided to try this from a few different angles.

I finally got something to work. Copy all files into the "dosbox_windows" folder, rename "dosbox_wizardry6.conf" to something else (just keeping a backup of your personalized version). Then rename "6.conf" to "dosbox_wizard6.conf". Tweak window resolutions and render settings as desired for your configuration. It should now work with the steam launcher (at least it did for me).

speculation: newer versions of dosbox (as packaged with steam) may not be looking for the dll files provided with the package, and something about the newer configuration file doesn't work with the old dosbox.
