If you have 1 copy that is the Original Edition & 1 that is the Definitive Edition then no it wont work without modding, but be careful with that as some of the mods I have tried before getting the Definitive Edition of Riptide was that it would cause random crashes & would even BSOD in some instances.

I have both Dead Island & Dead Island : Riptide in the Definitive Editions & I import characters from Dead Island to Dead Island : Riptide on a regular basis.
