In old german it was usual to replace that "ss" with a "ß".
Since 1997 the word "daß" should be replaced by "dass".
The rule was introduced there first.
But who reads the words which the Duden changes every year? ^^
Actually, "ß" makes a lot more sense, because you save a letter when writing.
However, Germans love to write the exact same letter several times in a row.
Like in the word "Schifffahrtsgesellschaft".
The you have a triple "f" and a double "l".
