Xp
  • Jellies are easy to kill, plentiful in the sky of the start biome, and worth a bucket of XP, they should be your primary source of xp in the early game.

  • Mining is a safe source of xp, the better the material you mine, the better the xp. This is a good secondary source of xp.

  • You don't have to level a skill in one go, you can put points in at any time if your XP limit isn't high enough to pay for the whole thing at once.
Research
  • Invest a couple of levels into base research early on to access the crafting benches you'll need.
  • Invest a couple of points into utilities research early on to get a better set of tools including a saw
  • (release patch 2) Shotguns (the boson blaster) are _excellent_, they hit multiple grouped targets, fire fast, and generally have a decent clip size.
  • Researching up to mortars is a good idea as early as possible, they are the 'easiest' weapon to use safely. Any kind of proximity missile is also a good option but mortars have a clear upgrade path.
  • The best early weapons require ammunition, don't forget to make some
Crafting
  • The 'auto' button is your friend... it will fill in resources in your recipe for you. Note it isnt always intelligent and will usually pick the biggest stack you have, don't let it waste titanium when protoleaf will do ;)

  • If you craft something and it doesn't appear in your inventory, it's proably in the rewards tab at the top right because your inv was full. This might also happen if you put materials into the crafting grid and close it, if they cannot fit back into your inventory (e.g. if something died nearby and you picked up its loot while crafting)

Misc
  • Command/control nodes also act as teleporters. It is a good idea to carry some with you as a quick way back to your base.

  • Dying or relogging is a good way back to your cryopod early on before you have many teleports set up

  • Using a saw on plants yields better loot than mining underneath them to make them pop

  • Falling is bad, if you catch fire while falling your landing will be eventful, short, but eventful. Feather those jets and try not to fall too far until you have a better jetpack and more energy (or a backpack that prevents fall damage)

  • There is no death penalty other than a fear of failure... explore like crazy !

  • To pick up items from the environment that you can't mine (e.g. tables, crafting stations, torches) hit the pickup key (default X) twice while howvering over the item. It'll take a moment and if you move it'll cancel.

  • Don't forget you can hit the background key while mining (default TAB) to mine out the background... you need a path of 'air' to mine out the background but it's a great way to double yield when mining near the surface.
Terraformers
Terraformers are found in primal zones and are your secondary levelling system. Finishing a terraformer 'quest' will give you three nodes which level one of your important secondary stats (extra ammo, exposure, bonus xp, etc.)

As well as getting an upgrade from the terraformer, you also get an increased XP limit which is very handy.

Some jerk left this thing lying around...
With a minigame !
Right click the terraformer to reveal loot candy

Other tips for brand new players:
*to use your research points/xp and unlock more things, click the green button on the lower left of the screen and choose "knowledge."
You can pick what category to upgrade, with base often unlocking what you need to produce said items (eg complex metal refiners)

*Don't forget missions! One of your menus has a tab with missions you can take (with no fail penalty). Available missions update on a separate timer vs accepted missions, so don't be afraid to take one when the counter is low. They give great bonus resources (eg gather [mud, rock, etc] will grant bonus metals, biomass, etc)

*everything gives you exp, so don't hesitate to kill, gather, mine anything. It also updates so more things can spawn. So if you are needing protoseeds, saw stuff down.

*unlike similar games, you really don't need platforms to explore. Your jetpack is quite good with just a few upgrades, and you can mine in the air while boosting on/off.

How do I increase my ScienceEXP cap without upgrades?

You get XP over 5000 as a secondary effect of getting upgrades from the terraformers.

I'm not sure how or if increasing the maximum xp works (I'm only a few hours into the 1.0 version), but you can dump xp into a skill even if you do not have enough to level it completely.

Example:
A skill needs 3000 xp, but you only got 1200 xp right now. You *can* invest it into a skill (it will show as "required: 1800 xp" afterwards and an xp bar that's almost half filled.) to prevent hitting that 5000 xp barrier.
It might be unimportant at the beginning, but skills get more and more expensive.
