Sometimes this happens: You are walking in woods and then you are shot by an enemy... then you scream, "♥♥♥♥♥♥ INVISIBLE HACKER!!!"
Nope, I'm sorry, that's just good camouflaging.
Camouflage is the art of making something less visible to the eye.
Animals' camouflage
In the nature, thanks to natural selection, animals changed their skin colors to obtain their food easier or to prevent being seen by predators (lions, polar bears, wood bears, snakes, etcetera...) to be less visible in the environment.
Military camouflage
To prevent high number of deaths, the armies of late ninetheenth century decided to give soldiers a uniform with a less visible color (British khaki) to fight in Africa for colonial wars. Then during WW1 all the armies currently fighting in the war changed their colors to help their soldiers (light green for Americans, feldgrau for Germans...) to those one color patterns. Then Italy started print on uniforms some patterns to distrupt body shape and make it less visible and soon after that, all the armies started do the same. France and Italy began a trend that continues all the way up to today, where we wear digital camouflages and advanced techniques to break the body shape.

Heroes & Generals is a game with a really low saturation making the colors very hard to distinguish from each other, also it struggles to have the similar colors of a normal environment because it is made to balance starting camos, from the different nations.
So this game having ♥♥♥♥♥♥ colors, is closely related to an autumn environment.
(little comparison just to show how much is under saturated).










It's better to start the core of this guide first instead wasting time ;)

There are 3 important things to remember in this game:
Colors, Brightness and Shapes.
These three rules are important to remember in order to hide yourself as sniper or to prevent being noticed by infantry during an ambush.

This is the easiest concept to understand: you just have to have a similar color of your background. Take a look at some soldiers in a desert op or some in a Vietnam op, they have camos with colors similar to the battlefield.
In the last updates H&G brought some more green to the usual brown-gray but the maps still lack it.
If you respect the color you have a bit advantage than just looking similar (army fall is better than brown fieldcamo in the woods, you look more brown) but it's not so important like the next.

Ever noticed how hard is to see an enemy in the woods rather than one in open field? And one during night and one during day?
Remember, if you want to be less visible the light will really affect your shape, so try to always stay under the shadows of a building or a tree because something under a shadows will not create a shadow and a 3d shape.
Also remember to not stay with a light color camo under the sun with a mid or dark background, it will be affected by a phenomenon called "insoluminance", which means you will be spotted because your body contrast a lot on the landscape/battlefield.
(May you don't know but the marine UCP has this problem)

When you have to fight in close quarters or in the bushes the shape of your body will make you detectable, remember this because when you buy a camo, if it's only one color it's useful only when you really try to use it, but when it has different colors it can work everywhere.
The shape is probably the harder to learn but it's very useful.
When your uniform has a single color pattern it can be less visible than a more colored pattern, but when you have to engage someone and stay hidden the most useful camo is probably the one with shapes of black to create fake shadows like a bush or white to remove shadows made from your body and to give you the ability to camouflage better in urban and mountain environments. Also if you stay hidden by a shadow your camo can become very effective.

We all know camos are really expensive and sometimes we think they are a waste of money, but here is my way to think it:
With the new credits gaining system you can now earn money very easily (5 to 10 battles and you earn about 100,000 credits), so for a beginner it is better choose your camo first before buying a new weapon because modded SA rifles alongside BA have at their advantage a low repair cost and a good power (a good choice can also be to stay with the first camo).


There are 5 different type of environments to understand before buying a new camo:

• WOODS. Probably the most useful camo is choosen to fight in an area with trees because it's hard to camouflage in open fields and urban combat has covers like a little wall or corners where you can escape or take cover during an engage. Woodland camouflages still remain the first choice of each modern army.
  This environment in H&G has a mix of brown (90%) and other colors.
  
• DESERT. The perfectly inverse of woodlands, but in H&G still there aren't any desert maps so...
  This environment in real life is typically the light brown/yellow color but with the powerful sun, can seem white.
  
• OPEN FIELDS. These fields usally fit a mix of colors from wheat fields (yellow and brown) to grass fields (green with some brown spots). In H&G there aren't places to hide or to cover yourself in open fields, so usually it is better to travel on them with a fast vehicle or a tank and not bother walking because the only ones who take position there are the very funny snipers.
  
• MOUNTAIN. This environment is full of natural types of cover and also can help you to break your shape, it's hard to travel on this with a tank or a vehicle making it a very good infantry battlefield. Also in H&G there aren't a lot of rock or mountains but when there are, a well placed sniper can really change the game. Typical colors are gray (50%), green and brown, different spots mixed with the gray (40%) and some rocks/bushes that become cover (10%).
  
• URBAN/CLOSE QUARTERS. This type of battlefield really changes the way to play the game. Here the most dominating weapons are not rifles but submachineguns and assault rifles. The correct camo has no real "hiding function" but it has to give you 2-3 seconds of advantage before the enemy detects you. In H&G normal Urban colors are gray (90%) with mixed shapes like a window or a wall and a little part of dark brown (10%) on the ground.
  -My personal experience on urban areas is completely different than other areas, during a battle when I got close to 2 germans and one of them had a splittermuster mountain my reflexes helped me aim my mg to the feldgrau noob and not to the super pro gamer. I saw him just 1 second later, but if I could have decided better by taking 1 second I would have certainly shot to the super pro and I could have won the engage without damage.

BEST CAMOS
There isn't a best camo because every camo can fit in a specified place. As best camo we can only obtain a camo which can fit well in the highest number of environments.

An example for the USA is the brown field camo, from my experience, the best infantry allied camouflage I have ever used for a long time. (Now there are much better camos for woods)
Here is an example of where it is effective.

This section is meant to help you understand the meaning of camouflaging. It's an hard technique to master that I couldn't yet achieve as I still learn every day something new, but I hope we can get it toghether.

URBAN/WOODS ENVIRONMENT, This is a typical battlefield, maybe 50% of the game is played there.
You will put the mouse at the spoiler after reading this and start counting up to 3 SECONDS because it is the maximum time you can notice an enemy in the same situation. If you notice him before the time runs out, you survive. But if you notice him too late, you die (No rewards, it's only for you, don't cheat yourself). GO.
