Absolutely useless and obscure Mega Trivia (but you know you'll try it!)
By Whygee
NES era Mega Man games were extremely enjoyable and replayable. As a kid, Mega Man was my constant companion. That said, actual video games (as in, not single screen blips) were still in their infancy, and sometimes the codes were... in their infancy as well. Compounded with a complete lack of option for patching like we have today, it led to many strange and wonderful (albeit oftentimes worthless) discoveries. This is a guide about a few of them.

Oldschool glitches and exploits!
Good day!

Friendly warning: Before we delve any further in this guide, I would advise any new players of Mega Man to come back once they've finished the game.

Are we good now?

Good.

As you may be aware, Mega Man on NES was a powerful motivator for young boys in the late 80s to spend countless hours destroying their eyes on piss poor TV sets, blasting away at robots. While this made the bottom line of eye specialists everywhere, it also led to many wonderful discoveries.

Of course, some are well known and have been documented over the Internets over the decades, like:

  • MM1 - Destroying everything in a single shot of Elecman's gun (rapidly pausing and un-pausing the game);
  • MM1 and MM2 - The pause glitching that makes you invulnerable (same as above);
  • MM1 and MM2 - The long-jump pause glitch in a couple of stages that makes you warp entire section of the map (same as above);
  • MM2 - The starbirds:
    (hint: hold "Jump" whilst choosing which Robot Master to fight next)
  • MM3 - "Undead" Mega Man mode (cannot be reproduced in Collection edition for lack of a 2nd controller input to press "Right" before jumping to your doom);
  • MM3 - Free Rush Adaptors (defeat Shadow Man before obtaining Rush Jet, go to his weapon in the menu, press RIGHT and then Start to find a depleted Rush Jet; reload it to full and you no longer need to beat Needle Man to get it. Idem for Rush Marine - but you'll need Spark Man's weapon to do it);
  • MM3 - Super lag mode (Up and A on Controller 2 should do the trick!; cannot be reproduced in MMLC because no controller 2);
  • MM4 - Randomizing Flip Top's loot (just rezone him without grabing his item);
  • MM4 - Free charged Pharaoh Shot (just make the overhead charge hit something, hit pause, recharge...)
  • MM4 - Scrolling stage skip (Use Wire device on a platform and let the screen move forward as you are rocketed into space)
    "Oh nothing guys, just chillin'."
    "So long, friends!"

  • MM4 - Killing Dr Wily (it's possible to actually kill Wily in MM4; once you have defeated the Wily Machine, 2nd form, quickly change to the Toad weapon - provided you didn't spend it all on Bright Man - and fire a quick rain. Note that, since Capcom doesn't condone of murder and/or violence directed toward human beings, as they would never gratify the player of such outlandish and reprochable behavior in any of their games (I lol'd), the game will no longer play out and you'll have to reset. Alternatively, instead of killing him with rain, you could just freeze him with Bright weapon and... you know... dance around for a little while)
  • MM6 - Energy Balancer Weapon exploit (input the code to get the Balancer but nothing else, and then proceed to either Plant or Flame Man as first destination. Once defeated, you'll get some weird results once you go to the next Robot Master lair)
  • etc...

    Now, when I spoke earlier about glitches, I wasn't talking about simple little programmer mistakes like this floating-in-the-sky-metal-blade that:
    No no no,

    Let's get on with the REAL glitches!
Absolutely useless but you love it!
But, who knows this one?

1- Play Mega Man 2
2- Acquire the Quick Boomerang before defeating Wood Man
3- Reach the end of the section with the Monkings and Pipis
4- Get on top of the ladder without embarking unto it, load up the Quick Boomerang and hold down the "Fire" button while tapping very gently the "Down" arrow. You should be set up like so:

5- Press Up. Magic happens (if not, just repeat process 4). After a few seconds, you'll end up looking like this:

6- Go ahead and explore parallel world Wood Man. What could possibly await at the bottom of this ladder!??!
But wait! There's more!
Ahh Mega Man 2...

As it turns out, you can mess around so much even Mega Man will get tired of getting into so much trouble!

1- Get Item 1 and head to Wood Man.
2- Before entering Wood Man's manly chamber, equip Item1.
3- Rapidly deploy 2 Item 1 right in front of you, jump on them, turn left, deploy another Item 1 1/2 way in the wall and jump on it running left.
4- This happens:
5- Explore a.. uhh.. level that feels like Dr Wily 3!
6- Face-off against DA BOSS (he's napping though, so just reset the game)
Well, if that's not some obscure glitch, I don't know what is!

Anyway, we, being great Mega Man players, all know that after defeating Wood Man, one should proceed to Air Man!!

So... Hey! Have you ever wondered what would happen if you tried dodging tornados by going over them (farfetched I know).
Well this happens (repeat Wood Man steps with Item 1):
And then you die, cause you are stuck!

Phew, no worries. I'll just respawn in Air Man's corridor! Right?
Gosh! Well... At least the right music is playing... or is it not supposed to be Dr Wily's Castle song??
Hey that was confusing!

Phew, now that all this unpleasentness is behind us, let's revisit Heat Man's stage!

We all know what happens when you fire off a couple of quick Bubbles!
Oh wait, that's not what... What?
Hey, this looks familiar (Dr Wily 1, anyone?)
Hey, I told you this was useless!
Gave you a fair warning!

But hey, maybe you too have great Mega Bugs and weird Mega Facts to share! If so, go ahead, this is the place for it! :)

Until next time, Jump&Shoot some more! And make sure to hang out with your friends whenever (and wherever) you can!

I hacked all items to always be available, so I could use Item 1 in Heatman. This is what it looks like when you reach the dragon: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_6JReRSqCMM
If you defeat him, it just counts as defeating Heatman, sadly.

Also, that "useless" trick with the Quick boomerang on Woodman's ladder is actually crucial to mid-level Wood strats in the speedrun,

This only happened one time. I was trying to speedrun MM3. I was fighting Gemini man, I used my snake search rapidly firing. When one of the clones were dead Gemini is still running and long jumping as if the clone was still alive. When I kill the other clone I was soft locked. I tried to replicate it but it couldn't be done.

In the megaman 4 boss rush challenge, I died to Ringman. But for some strange reason, the Pharoah Shot I was charging didn't vanish. And thus, Ringman was killed by it and I was teleported to Diveman with 0 HP.

Because fuck logic.

Theres also a small Glitch, Megaman 2, In Metal man's stage, (You need Item 2,) Go to the E-Tank closest to the Boss Door, Throw out 2 and press down before your actually on the jet. The boss will start and there will be no annoying Enemys to fight!

It's the very first one at the top! (It works on everything, not just Yellow Devil) :steamhappy:
