Report a translation problem
-The "decent" loot in the game is behind the locked doors, so it is worth using the mana to cast unlock spells to get into them and get better loot (it makes it much easier to get all the "collect x item" achievements as well as that is a bunch more chests to open)
-I completed at level 6 without any difficulty, I got to 4 I think before doing all the way past the rogue general fights, and like you I did another grind session on the trolls to 6, I didn't find anything that troubled me through the rest of the game at that point
-Casting the light spell once you have done the inital grind session and your mage is level 3 or more and it lasts a fairly long time, and as you don't really use mana when you are high level compared to the monsters, and makes it easy to get the torches achievement as you never use any
