Wearing modded gear isn't particularly a must, especially if we can get a nice weapon with appropriate armor. For this purpose, enchantment onyx stones does the job quite well and the selection is quite large -- ranging from %mana regeneration, max health, defense, power, elemental bonus and much more!

Before we can inlay an onyx, we have to ensure our armor or weapon has an empty slot into which it can be embedded. If it doesn't already have one, we'll need to purchase a mallet and do it ourselves.

Using a mallet
Some onyx stones can be inlaid only within a specific slot, hence it is important to check the mallet description to ensure we will produce the proper slot.

From within the inventory, double-click the mallet and drag our gear into the mallet interface -- select the mallet once more and press start. Mallets have a high fail rate....

Using an onyx
Before inlaying an onyx, it is important to know that our equipment will become non-tradeable once the stone is embedded -- and if we wish to upgrade our armor, the onyx needs to be removed. For this reason, we suggest to upgrade the armor first, then enhance it with an onyx.

Equipping an onyx follows the same steps as using a mallet: double-click the onyx inside our inventory and select gear -- select the onyx once more and then press start. This step is 100% success rate.

Removing an onyx
An onyx can easily be removed from our gear, for free, by opening the Onyx tab within the Everyday Skills interface (ctrl+X) From there, we select our equipment and the equipped onyx, then press start to remove it. Some onyx stones can be inlaid more than once whilst others are one time use only.

Onyx stones are quite versatile in which we can use them as we see fit. There are no must-haves either, so it's up to us to decide how we'd like to improve ourselves. Here are a few suggestions....

When fighting all over the place, having a class specific or an elemental onyx may not mean a lot, but it becomes very useful when we are continuously leveling in one spot.

Class specific onyx...

• They are either good for causing more damage to <class name>
  
• Or giving us more defense against <class name>

We can find a monster's class by mousing hover its name/health bar

Elemental onyx....
Using the elements to our advantage, we can easily increase our damage output, hence the need to understand how it functions. The basic idea goes like this: monsters have elements, the onyx on our weapon also has an element. Therefore, we should use onyx stones that hinders the monster's element.

A simple way to remember the elemental wheel is that Fire melts Metal, which cuts Wood, which falls onto the Earth, into the Water, which puts away the Fire. Do note that if the monster's defensive element actually hinders ours, our damage dealt will be reduced.
