Crossbow camping on London Tournament
By [Lemons] w!z@rD and 1 collaborators
Do you want to be an effective crossbowman or just that camper everyone rages about? Why, you've come to the right place then. Just watch out that you don't get vote kicked...

Perks
Offensive Perks - Ranged: Marksman Training, Eagle Eyed
Movement Perks - Infantry: Field Warden, Cat Burglar
Officer Perks: Replenish Bonus, Reinforce Bonus / March Speed Bonus

The other perks don't really matter, choose whatever you want.

Weaponry
Italian Arbalest: Push Lever, Standard Bolts, Double Quiver or no attachement

If you can't afford the Italian Arbalest (costs 100.000 coins), you can also use the Steel Spanned Crossbow.

As secondary you can use whatever you want. The most powerful secondary weapons are the Battleaxe, the Almain Warhammer and the Mace. One handed swords are a decent choice too.

Armour
Light Armour: Jupon - Dark Green
Light Helmet: Cloth Hood - Dark Green / Dark Brown + Face Cloth

Encumbrance slows down the reloading process. Therefore it's advised to use light armour.
However, if you want to also engage in melee combat, medium armour is a decent choice as well.

Since many camping spots are in or behind trees, choosing a dark brown and/or green armour is very advantageous!

The map

The first map features an overlay of the different map zones and aims to provide a simple overview of London Tournament. If you coordinate a sniping party with friends, knowing the zone names is useful.
The second map shows viable camping and hiding positions.

"Behind the jousting lane" could also be "Archery range benches". Ultimately, it's up to you and your friends how you call the positions and zones.

Green dots are hiding spots. You can go there when you are being chased by someone.
Obviously though this won't work if the person is right behind you.

Yellow dots are camping positions. You can reach all of these without the Field Warden perk.

Orange dots are camping positions also but are not completely legit - some would call them glitches. They are not actual glitches though, since it's possible to reach most of them without horses or the Field Warden perk.

Red dots are glitches. If you use these you will likely be vote kicked, I don't recommend using them.
I loathe people who use glitches, but I've decided to list them here anyway because you'll be able to find the glitchers easier if you know their possible locations.
Using a horse it's possible to glitch into and onto any building, but there are only a few viable ones.

Positions - Camping (orange)
For most of these you do not even have to use the Field Warden perk. However it can be significantly easier, especially when you are new to the game.

Upper York spawn

Tall tree by the stand

Jump on the leftmost bar of the stand and then on the big tree branch. Walk up but be careful not to fall! This position may not make for the best overview, yet it can be useful to evade melee pursuers.

Central Lancaster spawn

One of the backmost roofs

[Field Warden only]
From the stack of hay, jump onto the roof of the shelter and from there onto the edge of the target roof above the hay.

Lower Lancaster spawn

On the small roof next to the jousting lane

Get into the tree by jumping from the stones. Then sneak/walk your way up and jump onto the roof.

Tower

In the framework above the roof (left)

Simply jump/walk into the framework from the stairs.

In the framework above the roof (right)

Climb the ladder of the platform to the very top (you still have to be on the ladder) and let yourself drop onto the roof by pressing 'E'.

On the roof above the platform

When on top of the platform, jump onto the shield of the dummy, then on its sword. Face the small roof and jump onto its edge.

Riverside

Treetop above the platform

[Field Warden only] [This one will test both your ability and patience]
At the biggest of the four poles, jump towards the pole/onto the torch. Then press either 'B' or 'CTRL' immediately to prevent falling down. Slowly walk/sneak your way up to the very top. Afterwards jump on the horizontal bar and walk into the treetop.
Positions - Glitches (red)
Since I do not want to encourage the usage of the glitches, I will not explain how to reach the following positions. This section purely exists for demonstration purposes and in order to aid players in finding possible glitching players.

Central York spawn

Inside the upper building

Inside the lower building

Roof of the building at the upper exit

Central Lancaster spawn

Inside the central building

On the roof of the central building

Tower

Inside the lower floor

Arena

Top left corner inside the small shack

Archery range

Roof of the house by the tent

Tips and tricks
  • /kill has manifold uses:
    - Get to the other side of the map and/or back to your spawn point in the blink of an eye.
    - Troll people.
    - If your position is about to be compromised, you can use /kill to prevent the enemy from actually discovering the position, this way it's safer to use the position again later on.

  • When you instakill a player they can often (but not always) see your position.
This is highly disadvantageous as you are forced to switch positions or run the risk of getting targeted by revenge-seeking opponents.
However, you can also use this to your advantage by pretending to run to another position but then running back to your previous spot or to an entirely different position.

  • Immobile players are obviously the best targets. Focusing on players who are reviving, bandaging, reloading or calling their horse will get you the best score and the most offensive chat messages.

  • Do not try to help your team mates in melee fights by sniping their opponents. This is usually a waste of bolts and the chance to hit your team mate instead of the enemy is too high to risk it. Instead wait until the fight is over. If your team mate has won, protect him from possible enemy snipers or melee fighters trying to get an easy kill. If the enemies have won the fight, you have easy targets, as they will usually bandage or revive.

  • Most hitboxes in War of the Roses are accurate to the pixel, which means that you can shoot even through the smallest gap. Use this to kill players who think they're invincible behind a few wooden boards!

  • Should somebody attack you with melee weapons, don't immediately put away your crossbow if it's still loaded! Instead try to quickscope the player. Don't aim, just press RMB and LMB quickly after.
Doing a headshot can easily result in an instakill but hitting the head is obviously not that easy if an enemy is about to engage you in melee combat. If you are an inexperienced quickscoper, targeting the chest is most viable.
If you've landed a hit, use your dagger to finish off that pesky attacker.

  • Turning off the shadows via the graphics settings does not only boost the game's performance (frame rate), but also makes it much easier for you to spot players!

  • It's not recommended to use a certain pattern which you change positions by since doing so makes it easier for opponents to ambush you.
However if you use a pattern, make sure to use not just one but several. Furthermore change them often - at least everytime you die/an opponent is after you.

  • Get into a crossbower exclusive squad (usually squads 5-8) and use the tagging and squad spawn mechanics to mark enemies. If you are killed, tell your fellow crossbowmen what happened and where. Communication is key!

  • If you are playing with friends or random people who happen to know how to use the team chat, make sure you and your team mates position yourself so that the whole (Arena) area is covered. It's even better if you can see each other and are able to help each other in case one sniper is attacked. Again, communication is key!

The thing is, this guide isn't about the duel server, just the map London Tournament, people are merely thinking of the duel server

We know that glitch, HolyDiver, but its usefulness just doesn't make up for the effort needed to get there. That's why it isn't listed here. After all, this guide is about effectiveness rather than showing off glitching skills.
