Having trouble setting up an account?

The method for creating an account here is a little old-fashioned, and not immediately obvious. This guide will walk you through the process and get you into the game as quickly as possible.

To create an account, please follow these steps:

• Click the large PROFILE button in the upper left corner. This will open the Select/Edit Profile window.
  
• In the Player Name box, you should see CHANGEME. You need to change this to a new name. Most names are already taken -- this game has been running for many, many years! The only way to see if a name is available is to try it. Enter your desired name.
  
• In the Password box, enter your password. Remember it, because it can be difficult to recover!
  
• OPTIONAL: In the Resolution box, set it to <default>. This will let you choose your screen resolution from the main menu.
  
• OPTIONAL: In the Auto box, type ?obscene in order to ensure you receive all messages. This bypasses the game's obscenity filter, which is on by default and can't be turned off in menu. If you don't turn off the obscene filter, you will have entire messages blocked, and this may be confusing.
  
• Click OK.
  
• OPTIONAL: Select your desired screen resolution in the Resolution menu at the top of the screen. Choose Windowed mode by clicking Windowed at the bottom of the menu, if desired.
  
• Select a zone from the menu. SSCU Trench Wars, SSCU Extreme Games and SSCU Death Star Battle are all good starting choices, though Trench Wars probably has the simplest gameplay of them all. Death Star Battle has the best in-game tutorial, which can be accessed after you enter the game by typing ?go tutorial.
  
• Click PLAY in the bottom right corner.
  
• If you see this message, "Invalid password for the specified user. The name you entered may already be in use by another player, in which case you should try another name. Otherwise, check your password. ou may have made a mistake entering it.", the account is already in use by another player. You will need to click PROFILE again, and choose a new name under Player Name.
  
• Keep trying new names until you find one that is not in use. When you find one that is open, you'll get a message saying: "Unknown name. Would you like to create a new user and enter the game using this name?" Click Yes.
  
• A Player Information window appears. This information is not used by anyone, except for password recovery purposes. (It's a relic from when Subspace was run by VIE.) Enter a valid email address. If you lose your password, you will need to send an email from this address in order to recover it. It also helps if you enter other correct information that you can later use to verify that you are who you say you are.
  
• Now a window asking if you want to read the News file for the selected zone. Click Yes to read the news file and get more information about upcoming events in the zone, as well as to find out the URL of the zone's website, forums, etc.
  
• Click Close after you've finished reading the news file, and you'll enter the game.
