Needed Stuff
  • A Nvidia Video Card - Needs to be sufficiently powerful, it's going to be running 2 1080p screens. Might work with AMD, but I can't be sure and I can't help.
  • 2 1080p screens that can connect to your video card - If you can't figure this out, turn back now. Might work with other size screens, but I can't be sure and I can't help.
  • 2 Xbox 360 or compatible controllers - Personally I use DS3's, and it might be possible to only use one, that's a different guide though.
  • Portal 2 - Might work with other games, but I can't be sure and I can't help.
  • Windows 7 - will probably work on other OS's, but I can't be sure and I can't help.

If you have all of these, I will answer any questions you might have if you comment, otherwise I can't help you.
Step 1: Have both screens connected and set up in Nvidia Surround
Refer to Nvidia guides or your Video card manual on how to do this. Works best if both screens are the same size.
Step 2: See that you can't simply run the game in splitscreen like this right away.
This happens. The video is not full screen on either screen. The black bars on the screenshot are there in real life.
Step 3: Edit the file making this happen.
Navigate to \wherever your steam library is\steamapps\common\Portal 2\portal2\

You're looking for splitscreen_config.txt
Open it in Notepad or Notepad++

It looks scary, but we're only going to be changing 2 numbers.

change it to 32 by 18

Save the file.
Step 4: Play some Couch Co-Op with 2 full screens!
No black bars!

Thank you! Great guide.
I would add that you need to change DisplayPort version to 1.2 instead of 1.4 (in the case of some new monitors and using DisplayPort). This fixed the issue for me where Surround would get an error in connection, have found this fix for that error online.

For AMD step 1 will be:
Activate AMD Eyefinity for Portal 2
Step 4:
Change resolution in game to 3840x1080

Not work. TV samsung 46" and pc monitor benq XL2411 both 1980x1050. When start game TV says no signal. When shut game TV gets signal and NV surround works again.

maybe other source engine games with splitscreen? (does Left 4 Dead have splitscreen?) Or maybe other games that are similar, but the proccess would certainly be different.

The Nvidia Surround setup would probably work, I have no clue how to fix the aspect ratio and FOV in other games.

Would this in theory work with other games?

Glad it worked for you!
