Nimble Writer Hotkeys Guide

List of Nimble Writer hotkeys I've found, along with its descriptions. Hope this guide can provide assistance for NW users.

Things to Note
Few things to note:

Terms (my version):
  1. The green box on the upper left part of the image, I call it Main Toolbar;
  2. The purple box on the left part of the image, I call it Chapter Manager;
  3. The red box on the lower part of the image, I call it Formatting Tools.

General:
  • Line (please check the picture below);

    Line refers to number of paragraphs plus empty spaces between them within one chapter. (Indicated by a shading behind words)
    Following this concept, we can conclude that the chapter has 10 lines present.
    4 empty lines, 6 paragraphs.

Commonly used
Important hotkeys for writers.
Ctrl:
  • Ctrl + A = Select all lines within one chapter.
  • Ctrl + C = Copy selected text.
  • Ctrl + F = Find text.
  • Ctrl + G = Go to selected line.
  • Ctrl + H = Find and replace text.
  • Ctrl + N = Create a new .nwd document.
  • Ctrl + O = Open a .nwd document.
  • Ctrl + S = Save a document.
  • Ctrl + V = Paste the copied text, works between chapters.
  • Ctrl + X = Cut selected text.
  • Ctrl + Y = Redo an action, up to few times.
  • Ctrl + Z = Undo an action, up to few times

Ctrl + Shift:
  • Ctrl + Shift + S = Save As.
Word Formatting
Hotkeys to format texts.
Basic:
  • Insert = Toggle letter overtype mode.

Ctrl:
  • Ctrl + B = Apply Bold format to the selected text; indicated by 2 asterisks(**); must be placed in front of the text and behind the text; can't be applied to specific letter within a word.

  • Ctrl + E = Switch the selected paragraph between centered and left-aligned; indicated by <center> at the beginning of the line.

  • Ctrl + I = Apply Italic format to the selected text; indicated by 1 asterisk(*); must be placed in front of the text and behind the text; can't be applied to selected letter within a word.

  • Ctrl + J = Switch the selected paragraph between justified and left-aligned; indicated by <justify> at the beginning of the line.

  • Ctrl + L = Switch the position of selected line with the line on top of it; even if that line is blank.


  • Ctrl + R = Switch the selected paragraph between right-aligned and left-aligned; indicated by <right> at the beginning of the line.

  • Ctrl + U = Apply Underline format to the selected text; indicated by underscore(_); must be placed in front of the text and behind the text; can't be applied to selected letter within a word.

  • Ctrl + Delete = Delete letters up to the next word.

Ctrl + Shift:
  • Ctrl + Shift + U = Turn selected letters into capital letters.

  • Ctrl + Shift + Delete = Delete letters within one line up to the end of that line.
Viewing and Navigating
Quickly change current view and navigate around the text line.

Basic:
  • F11 = Toogle full-screen mode.

  • Home = Once: Return the cursor to the beginning of the line where the cursor is located, within same level.





  • Home = Twice: Return the cursor to the beginning of the line where the cursor is located.







  • End = Once: Put the cursor at the end of the line where the cursor is located, within same level.

  • End = Twice: Put the cursor at the end of the line where the cursor is located.

  • Page Up = Scroll the document up one screenful.

  • Page Down = Scroll the document down one screenful.

Ctrl:
  • Ctrl + +
    or
  • Ctrl + Mouse wheel up = Zoom in.

  • Ctrl + -
    or
  • Ctrl + Mouse wheel down = Zoom out.

  • Ctrl + 0 = Reset current zoom value back to 100%.

  • Ctrl + ↑ = Scroll up a page once; similar to Mouse Wheel Up function.

  • Ctrl + ↓ = Scroll down a page once; similar to Mouse Wheel Down function.

  • Ctrl + \
    or
  • Ctrl + → = Move one word to the right.

  • Ctrl + /
    or
  • Ctrl + ← = Move one word to the left.

  • Ctrl + ] = Move to next paragraph. ♪
  • Ctrl + (open square bracket) = Move to previous paragraph. ♪
    **Sorry I can't put up the sign, because somehow, it messed my formats.**
    **Anyone knows how to fix this?**

    Note ♪:
    Note : A blank space must be present. If it doesn't, you will be directed to the next second paragraph instead.

    This is when a blank space doesn't present. Notice that it skips the "Can't touch this" paragraph and moves you to the next paragraph.











Alt:
  • Alt + 1 = Hide/unhide Chapter Manager.

  • Alt + 2 = Hide/unhide Main Toolbar.

  • Alt + 3 = Hide/unhide Formatting Tools.
Miscellaneous
Others that have not been listed yet.

Basic:
  • F12 = Activate Steam Screenshot.

Ctrl:
  • Ctrl + F1 = Hide/unhide Lua Console.

  • Ctrl + M = Put a little red triangle shaped mark under the place your Typing cursor (the flashing one) currently presents.
    **Still need clarification for its function**

Ctrl + Shift:
  • Ctrl + Shift + A = Add bookmarks, doodles, and notes for the selected chapter; the button (Add...) can be found on the lower-left part of the screen.

Can you please help me? I just got this program as a gift and already I broke it, how do I get the page size from the size of a book mark to normal? Thank you.

Thanks!! This is exactly what I was lookling for. Nimble Writer should come with this type of document as a part of the Help menu or be visible as the 1st default document when you open it with a checkbox to disable it.

Check the Addons folder in the application folder on how to register a Lua function to a shortcut. Should be at the bottom of init.lua. I'll do my best to write some more documentation later, but for now this should help: https://github.com/NimbleTools/NimbleWriterDocs/wiki

The console addon registers Ctrl+F1 as a shortcut (in Lua) to toggle the console.
