Introduction to railing!
Me and my friend discovered railing quite some time ago. We've been closet railers for quite some time, but now we'll help YOU jump into Dark Souls 2 railing and give you a lesson about the different types of rails!

The basics of railing is jumping or falling onto a platform that you can't get to by basic means of movement, like walking!

A basic rail.
Meta rails
Meta rails are rails that aren't very long and doesn't usually resemble a wall or a fence.
These can sometimes be quite hard to get to, but with a bit of luck, you can conquer a marvelous rail that hasn't even been documented yet!

A meta rail.
Wall rails
These rails are usually really easy to conquer, a wall rail is basically a rail with an object, structure or wall that stops you from rolling or falling off while doing the rail.

Many members of the railing community don't even consider some of them as legit, as there's no real challenge to conquer them.

Two different wall rails.
Fake rails
Fake rails aren't considered legit rails and doesn't require you to jump or fall in order to conquer them.

If you find a fake rail, please report it to the railing community moderators. These guys will document the rail, and inform people in case someone has comitted a fake rail, or document it as a legit rail on the Steam community.

The usual fake rail. Notice the snow underneath the player, the snow lets him walk casually on to the fake rail.
Long rails
These rails are very long or lets you travel pretty far until you reach the end of the rail. Long rails are often to be considered the opposite of meta rails, since the angles of meta rails are much more equal in lenght than long rails.

I've heard rumors of a long rail that lets you travel out of the map, but I've never seen it myself. That could be one of the legendary rails, which will be introduced next on the list.
A long rail.
Legendary rails
These are the hardest rails that only a professional railer can conquer without dying a lot. If you can manage to document a new legendary rail and conquer it, you aren't far from becoming an MLR (Major League Railer) and finding the true meaning in railing. I can't guide you if you want to achieve that, that's a journey you need to take yourself...

Legendary rail found in Dragon Aire. This is one of the endgame boss-rails, and the only known way to access it is by using a zipline.

Now with a Youtube video in case you're a visual learner like me!
Alpine rails
Alpine rails are rails that you pretty much have to "climb" to get to, and consists of several stages of jumps required to conquer the rail. Alpine rails are usually the most harmless rails. This one though, can be pretty hazardous.

Alpine rail.
Fragile rails
Fragile rails are accessed by breakable or changable objects that the player has to keep from breaking or changing in order to conquer the rail. Most breakable objects respawn if you travel back through a bonfire, while chests and some other objects can't respawn and needs ascetics or even a travel to the next NG in order to function, if broken or changed.

By changed I mean moved or disappearing objects, like certain gates that can only be opened once per bonfire intensity, or even NG. Not sure if any of those require a new playthrough though.

A fragile rail.
Have fun!
Now have fun and get railing, there are lots of rails out there to be conquered. I hope you enjoyed my guide!

And if you're into railing, don't forget forget to join the Dark Souls 2 railing community if you haven't yet! :) We are updating the group every time we get our hands on news regarding Dark Souls railing, we even announced a news update on how Dark Souls 3 will affect railing with it's gameplay changes.

*whispers* And maybe one day, you'll also know the true meaning of railing... though the darkness, is hard to comprehend...

Thanks to this guide, i now have sponsorship offers from several major skateboarding companies around Lordran and I no longer bail when trying to land a 50-50 grind in the executioners chariot room.
