Only other thing I can suggest is reinstalling. But if verifying the game cache didn't work, then I seriously doubt reinstalling will.

tried verifying, so it's probably a computer problem

although turning it off and on again works temporarily

Although in all seriousness, have you tried veryfying the game cache, or maybe it has something to do with your graphics card?
