If you're short on crates, don't forget that you can replay missions as free battles to get more crates.
When you're just starting out, you should focus on developing assault tanks. also, do make sure your battle speed is not set at max, since that greatly benefits the AI.

Oh, and Daihon'ei (大本営) was the name for the Imperial Japanese General Headquarters (the combined HQ of the Army/Navy at a political level) during their Imperial (Middle Meiji, to early Showa) phase. It pretty much means "Great (as in big) HQ" in older, less common today terms.
