Foreword
Welcome to this short guide about trading. Its purpose is to give a few tips for trading goods in Raven's Cry aswell as giving a quick look-up method where to buy which items and where to sell them, so players can plan their routes efficiently.

I hope I could help.
Basics
The idea behind trading is pretty basic and obviously not limited to Raven's Cry. The player tries to make profit by claiming as many goods as possible for a low price and selling them for a higher one. There are several things the player has to keep in mind though:

  • Don't buy or sell too much of one item in the same port. As a product gets less common or rare its price adjusts, having its buying price increased and selling price lowered and therefore lowers your profit.
  • Every good is either common or uncommon on each island, however, as mentioned above, prices may stagnate. Visit multiple ports so goods can resplenish or supply shorten's over time. This time is calculated by the days spent traveling on sea.
  • Watch your cargo space. It is limited and randomly buying cheap goods can quickly fill it. Try to plan your routes ahead so you always have enough space for a quick raid on an enemy ship.
  • Reputation directly impacts the prices for buying and selling items. It seems that only the overall reputation of all factions matter. Having a low repution for a single faction impacts prices in every port, not just in faction specific ones. Therefore it is the best to have high reputation for all factions. (thanks br3n065)
  • When buying or selling large amounts of items, holding the "ctrl"-button speeds up the process, as it allows the player to buy or sell ten units of an item at once.
Items and Prices
In this section the optimal buying and selling price aswell as the weight of each tradable item is listed. Keep inmind though, that the price for goods is directly linked to reputation, therefore the listed price can differ to the actual ingame price. It is handy to know those prices to get a quick view where it pays off to buy or sell which goods and additionally makes it obvious when one is purchasing or selling too much of one item.

Efficiency
While traveling the vast ocean and buying goods for a bargain or simply stealing them from your foes before burning their ships (or releasing them ... oh, who am I kidding? Nobody does that.) one might notice that there is little cargo space left. Now, which items are worth buying, keeping or leaving on the ship? For one it is important to keep an eye on the next port on the player's route, so one can get rid of as much goods as possible, cleaning out the cargo bay for the next trip. However, it might also seem useful to know the actual worth of a specific item. Since items vary in pricing the efficency for some of them depends on how the player acquires them. Doing some basic math reveals the profit per ton for each item:

Supply and Demand
All towns in Raven's Cry have either supply or demand for the items. However, getting a quick overview over the market proves difficult, as the information the game offers on the map is lacking. Further information can be gathered by talking to the barkeepers in the taverns, but these aren't too accurate either. The best way to get a good idea is to glance at the prices of each item in every town. But who got the time for that? Also one probably might want to know where to sell goods before setting sail. Therefore this guide provides a short and handy chart for each item and town.

"+" indicates that an item is cheap to buy in that specific town
"-" indicates that an item can be sold for a high price in that specific town

I found them. On the map they're called 'Merchant'. I've been wandering around all the shopkeepers instead.

This is not easy to show without screenshots. The best way is to open the map and check the symbols for the exact location. Keep in mind that you have to own a ship to be able to trade (it isn't possible untill right before you leave St. Lucia for the first time). Usually the traders aren't too hard to find. Good luck.

I have a more basic question: where in the towns do I buy the trade goods?
GojiraShadow 14 Feb, 2015 @ 9:58pm
Just had a look at the sale prices of items at different fraction ports, and found that a higher rep with one over another doesn't have an effect on price. The increase in sale price and decrease in buying price must be calculated according to overall rep. Not the individual rep for each fraction as I had thought.
I also checked the buying of 10t vs 1t(x10) and on Silk I saw that it was 2r more expensive to buy the 10t over 1t. For selling, 10t was better by 3r. My guess is that prices are a float(0.0) value, rounded down. As this probably allows more fine tuning of prices as rep increases/decreases, but you only notice when buying/selling in bulk.

Also, what I want to test in the near future: When pressing either the "shift" or the "strg"- button (not sure about which one) you can buy/sell 10 units at once (this also works in regular shops, pressing the buttons and clicking on, for example, stolen rings, sells the all at once). Not only speeds this the whole process of trading up, but there seems to be more to it: Selling 1t of Rum grants 13r. Selling 10t of Rum grants 136r. I want to check if there is actually a bonus factored in or if this simply an inaccuracy in rounding.

Thank you so much for the tip. I am not playing the English version, so I got things mixed up (damn that song).
As for the reputation system, I know that tip in the loading screen, however, I am not entirely sure how and if this is actually factored ingame. I wrote this guide with the spanish reputation almost hitting zero, and prices were the same all around the ports. Probably the tweak to the reputation system in version 1.02 changed things up a bit. I can test things after the weekend. However, what I noticed, but I can't test this at the moment aswell: The lower the reputation, the faster the price seems to go up when buying a specific item and vica versa.

Nice work, couple of things worth noting. One being that your reputation has an effect on the prices, this is from a load screen. "Your reputation will affect the prices of your goods when trading. A low or poor reputation will increase your buying costs and decrease selling prices, while a high reputation will decrease buying costs and increase selling prices."
So as far as I know/understand, a poor rep with the Spanish could make buying Silk from Port Royal, and selling it at Cumana far less profitable. The other thing I'd like to point out is that it's not Ivory but Ebony.
