Which file and directory do I need?
First of all, go to your Heretic folder. You can find it in Steam file directory, as for me it's D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders. Open the "Base" folder. There, you will need to find the file called "Setup".
How do I use "Setup" file?
Most likely that it won't open if you double click it. But, don't worry. Just "drag" it into the file called "dosbox". If you did it right, you will see this:
What am I doing here?
Now, just select "Configue Controller", and then "Keyboard".
And here you just change the buttons as you wish.
Important!!!
IMPORTANT!!!
Don't forget to hit f10 when you redefined controls, because f10 accepts all changes.

When you're done, just hit Esc, say "Yes" when you will be asked to exit and save the changes, and here you are. Now you can play Heretic with your controls.

i also had issues running daggerfall. either emulated or not the game still crashes way too frequently for me to play. a shame because the game is really good.

a source port that still requires the wad file to run the game, just like a game emulator. this game can only be played by emulating it or running it on a source ported engine. running it natively on a dos machine is far out of most people's reach because of the cost of retro hardware or simply lack of knowledge on how dos works.

if someone was to install dos on a modern computer there's no guarantee things are going to work since modern hardware is not meant to be running such old operating systems, therefore its much more feasible using a retro computer to run the game natively, which is expensive, so running the game natively like an old-school gaming lover is out of question (why have rustic and true to original experience when you could have modern controls and support anyways. purists know their way around things so let them figure out how to get the original experience if they so want it. i bet they even like it more that way.)

the ideal solution to avoid problems like dealing with emulators or source ports is to have a development team who knows how to code (and might even have access to documetation on how the game works) to port the game and make sure it works on a variety of systems, running at least at 1080p without glitches, bugs or crashes, while potentially even fixing problems present in the original game like poor mouse controls or support/lack of support for modern controllers.

instead we have to rely on the community figuring things out at its own pace. since the game is not ported to modern systems they have to do it themselves.

GZDoom is not an emulator! It's a source port. It's rewritten and modified code of the original Doom with actual modifications made. You're no longer playing the game is it was.

"gzdoom? no thanks" implies you don't want to emulate the game, but the game is running on dosbox. you would need a msdos computer to run the game natively and lets not even talk about retro hardware costing hundreds nowadays.

port it to something modern so it can be played with modern peripherals and less hassle.

I don't get why everyone is complaining about this game not being ported. You get the authentic vanilla experience this way. Many old-school gaming lovers enjoy it this way very much, it's more rustic and true to the original. It's still useful to know how you can setup the controls. GZDoom? No, thanks.

Or play this with GZDoom on PC, it will give you the type of controls needed for proper PC play.

Can't stand the controls, so I just got QuestZDoom on my Quest 2 and copied the Heretic.WAD over, now I can play with way smoother controls, in VR. Waiting for someone to make Hexen VR Weapons before digging into that one, it's playable in VR but the weapons are flat lol. Heretic has 3D VR weapons so it's fun to play.
