Overview
Ranking
Every battle in Valkyria Chronicles gets ranked, with letters from A to D - A being the highest and D being the lowest. A higher ranking will award you with more experience and money to improve and outfit your troops.
The rank you get is solely determined by the number of turns you finish the battle on. While you can always check during a battle what rank you'll get for finishing the battle on the current turn (by looking at your Objectives), there's no indication of the limit for an A rank, or a B rank et cetera. You'll only know that you missed the turn limit when you already dropped to a lower rank.

Example
This guide is a compiled list of all the battle's turn limits to get each rank. This is an example of how it's displayed:

A Rank
B Rank
C Rank
D Rank
3
6
8
20

In this hypothetical battle, you will get an A rank as long as you finish the battle on turns 1, 2 or 3. If you finish on turns 4-6, you'll get a B rank and for turns 7-8 you will get a C rank.
Note that D rank is the lowest you can get, which means that the turn limit for getting a D is also the turn limit for the battle. If you pass the D rank limit, the battle ends - whether you win or lose in that case, depends on the battle conditions. Save for a few exceptions, the battle's turn limit is almost always 20 turns.
Story Missions
You will get one or two battles per story chapter. In the case that there are two battles in a chapter, i've marked them with -A and -B.

I do like the ranking system as it can increase replay value, but having it be purely off of how many turns it takes is unfortunate. It leads to the best strategy being to rush with scouts as it's essentially impossible to have the movement to do it any other way. I would much prefer extra rewards for things like clearing out every single enemy, or not losing a single troop.

@Fennekin54 - Which "second mission" you will get depends on whether you take out the enemy tank in the far SW corner during the first mission. I think you need to do that AND still get an A rank in order to proceed. Both Artillery and Rout use the same basic map, with different starting locations.

Getting an A on either will get you the Ruhm, a really, really broken Shocktrooper gun (only one of them) -- Scout gun range, Trooper gun ammo volume, Can take out tanks (with radiator hits) prior to the enemies upgrading to Elites in 4-7 hits with no Orders active. Getting an A on all 3 (different playthroughs) will unlock Azure Witch.

AGH you have to complete the first DLC skirmish in A ranking in order to unlock Silencing the Artillery

Whoa Selvaria's DLC has 4 missions? I better get started then, but thank you this helps me determine how long I need to take.
Killcreek2 23 May, 2015 @ 11:14pm
Thanks for the mission list, will help greatly with planning when aiming for A ranks.

@FoggyFishburn ~ you unlock the expert skirmish modes after completing the main game.

Great guide thanks!

Though it doesn't feature the expert difficulty on the skirmish maps? Not like I'm going to play them, there's no way I could ever beat them. Maybe some day.

Ty so much this is very helpful!
Liro Raériyo 1 Jan, 2015 @ 12:19am
Whoa, their are maps that give you more then 3-4 turns for an A rank? i assumed it as a baseline defacto rule that it was 3, maybe 4 turns on the larger and more difficult maps for an A rank.

I was looking for a spoiler-free way of knowing the exact amount of turns per map without having to spam "end turn" and count each bloody time.

Thank you!
