Every player in FM26 has a predetermined and generated personality which will give the manager some insight to how the player will act both on and off the field. Player's personality can totally change the way you see that player, both for better or for worse. Personalities are especially important when scouting younger players in terms of evaluating if the player can reach their perceived potential.

So how does the game calculate player's personality? By several hidden attributes of which's ratings can only be seen by using the in game editor. Just like player's skill attributes these are measured in 1-20 rating system 20 being the maximum.

Just like player's ability attributes, the hidden attributes can also increase and decrease over time, usually as a consequence of successful or failed mentoring. Along with hidden attributes also Determination and Leadership play a part in a player's personality. These two attributes can be seen from player's profile under mental attributes.

Each personality has certain thresholds that all attributes have to hit in order for the player to obtain that particular personality.

I will go through each of these attributes explaining their effects on aspects like player development, on field performances, possible off the field pitfalls, wage demands and so on.

Importance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐



The most important hidden attribute when it comes to finding out if your player will live up to their expected potential. All great personalities have reasonably high to very high levels of professionalism and almost all avoidable personalities have low professionalism.

So why is that? Because Professionalism is essential for player development. Having low professionalism will mean that the player will not develop at all or even worse, decline as time goes on. However if you have a player who has high professionalism you can sometimes see them take big leaps in relatively short time to develop into an influential player for your team.

However Professionalism in itself is not enough to guarantee that your player will have a great career. This is why i don't rate some high professionalism based personalities as highly as certain other players do.



Importance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐


Second attribute out of the three most important attributes that i look for in players who i expect to become stars for my team. Pressure measures player's ability to get the best out of their playing attributes in a competitive match. It doesn't matter how good your player is if he has low pressure rating because he won't be able to get the best out of himself when the team needs it the most.

Vice versa if you have a youth prospect with a relatively low current ability, but has a personality with a high pressure rating (Spirited, Resilient, Iron Willed) the player actually has a reasonably good chance to put together good performances on the pitch even though his current ability wouldn't suggest it to be likely. Pair this hidden attribute with high professionalism and you get a great prospect in terms of their personality.



Importance: ⭐⭐⭐⭐



Pretty self explanatory. Player's ability to perform in big matches. This is what separates men from the boys when you want your team to win the most prestigious awards in the game. I personally find it a big turn off if you have a high ability player who wants high wages and doesn't perform when you need them to perform.

Player's Important Matches rating can be scouted to some extent. Player's Important Matches rating can be seen as a icon in the pros and cons section of a player report. If their rating is less than 10 you will see it either as orange (6-9 rating) or dark red icon (1-5 rating) if the rating is above 10 (11-14) you will see it as light green and if its 15-20 you will see the icon as bright green. However its only visible for players over the age of 22!

Important Matches is the third hidden personality attribute out of three that i value highly.



Great Personality, Great Consistency, Great Important Matches, How much more can you ask from your starting goalkeeper?



Importance: ⭐⭐⭐



Ambition measures player's mentality towards becoming successful. Ambitious players look to move forward to bigger and better clubs in their careers and want to achieve as much as possible during their careers which they recognize, won't last forever. However this is a double edged sword because really ambitious players will expect high playing time, high status, high wages, but have a great attitude towards training and have high determination to succeed.

Meanwhile if the player has low ambition they don't take their careers so seriously which affects their training ratings and ability to perform under pressure. I personally prefer to have some ambition in a player, but not too much.

High ambition in itself doesn't have a big effect on development. Most of it is still determined by player's professionalism. However it does increase training ratings, making the development easier to obtain. Ambitious players usually get good training ratings from the get go rather than having to push them to do better.

Importance: ⭐⭐⭐



Temperament measures player's state of mind and their ability to react to negative situations on or off the pitch. Low temperament players will have problems with discipline on and off the field and will be vocal about their issues if they won't be treated to their own standards. Meanwhile players with high temperament can be role models as well as good players for team cohesion and chemistry in the locker room.

I don't find this hidden attribute particularly important. If its not really low it won't make a huge difference. However its beneficial if you have players who have high leadership and influence in the squad. This will help day to day management since captains can be expected to put out some of the fires that come up when you have an ambitious squad fighting for time on the pitch.




Importance: ⭐


Sportsmanship measures player's morals on and off the pitch. Players with high sportsmanship are usually well respected in the eyes of the fans and the media. However in itself sportsmanship isn't really something you need to have. Player with 1 sportsmanship can easily become a world class player if other hidden attributes are good enough. Same cannot be said from some other hidden attributes.


Importance: ⭐⭐



Loyalty measures player's bond towards their club. Players with high loyalty value their club highly and want to keep playing for their team for years to come and are willing to compromise on their goals, ambitions and finances to keep playing for the shirt. Players with low loyalty are opportunists and will seek to leave at first possible opportunity, especially at the times of hardship.

This is a another double edged sword. If the player is an absolute beast, high loyalty is great, but if he is not and you want to sell them, it can be really difficult because the player will reject contract offers from other teams. However great players with low loyalty will be very hard to keep, but on the bright side bad players with low loyalty are easier to offload.

(Controversy is measured from 1 to 20 like the rest of the attributes however lower controversy is better than high controversy)

Controversy is another attribute that measures player's state of mind and ability to handle negative situations on and off the pitch. Players with good controversy rating stay professional even when the team is struggling and if they don't get the treatment they deserve. Meanwhile players with bad controversy rating will make their voice heard both in the locker room as well as in the media. They can be difficult to deal with and harm team morale and atmosphere. More experienced managers can usually talk these players down, but managers with less experience will have more issues with these kind of players.

The importance of this attribute really comes down to how good you are with player management and talking them down when they have issues about something.

Before we start rifling through personalities i want to go through some things that will play an important role in this guide. One is player's media handling style. Many personalities have very high ranges on hidden attributes some attributes can even be anything from 1 to 20 which is where media handling style step in. Media handling styles give you more information about your player's hidden attributes.

For example Model Professional sounds like a great personality, but in itself the only thing that is guaranteed about it is that it has maximum professionalism possible. Rest of the attributes are more or less a mystery and that's not ideal. But if you know that the player's media handling style is say "Evasive" you will have more information to work with.

Media Handling Styles act as more information about a player's personality. Many personalities have wide ranges on attributes that are important so knowing a player's media handling style can be very important. Player's media handling style can be found from the player profile under the "Personal Information" tab.

I will go through each and every base media handling style so that you can combine this information with the information of their personality which i will go through later.

(Player can also have multiple media handling styles in which case the game will use both the highest attributes and lowest attributes from each media handling style and mix them together in a way that you get both the best out and worst out of both worlds.)

Evasive ↗️⚽

Borderline overpowered media handling style. Guaranteed minimum 15 professionalism and 15 Pressure is incredible to have in a player. More or less every personality with this media handling style will be great players both on the field and in terms of development off the field. This is why i look down on some personalities, because you can't have that personality in combination with this media handling style. Only negative thing i can come up with is the relatively low ambition which can lead to problems getting good training ratings, possibly slowing down player development.

Unflappable ⚽

Guaranteed 15 pressure is really nice. Especially if you combine this media handling style with a personality that has high professionalism, guaranteeing high scores on the two of the most important hidden attributes in the game.

Reserved ↗️

Guaranteed 15 professionalism is great, but maximum 14 pressure is a big handicap. This would be great if the pressure range would be 1-20 because it would mean that it could be used in combination with personalities like Spirited or Resilient, personalities which have really high pressure rating, but not as good professionalism, guaranteeing a great personality.

Confrontational ↗️

Sounds much worse than it actually is. Guaranteed 13 professionalism is great to have. However its very specific temperament range does limit the amount of personalities and players this can be found on.

Level-Headed

First of the Media Handling Styles which tells you nothing important about their attributes. You only know for sure that they got decent loyalty and that the temperament doesn't suck. Sadly this is also the most common handling style so you see this pretty often on players.

Media-Friendly

Straight up lottery. I'm struggling to understand why this handling style is made this way. You would think that media-friendly person would have at least some sportsmanship, temperament and low controversy, but this just doesn't. Second most common media handling style as well which is really annoying. If you like living on the edge, find this media handling style and balanced personality so that you will know absolutely nothing about the player and figure things out over time.

Volatile

Pretty much lottery, but temperament is guaranteed to be low. Decent averages on professionalism, pressure and important matches, but i wouldn't count on them since the ranges are still 1-20.

Short-Tempered

Encouraging average score on Professionalism. Temperament is on the floor, but you can live with that. Rest are pretty much lottery.

Outspoken 〽️

Really alarming averages on pressure and important matches. Also guaranteed issues with controversy. I would avoid this media handling style as much as possible.

So which personalities are the ones you will want to have? Well i analyzed every single one and made them into a tierlist. I will go through the list, tier by tier, personality by personality.

Resilient

Resilient players are used to pressure and rise to the occasion when needed. You can expect these players to perform when the the stakes are high. Their personality is very similar to Light-Hearted, both share high ratings on pressure and important matches. Resilient has even higher pressure rating, but also lower ratings on temperament and sportsmanship. Not being able to have Reserved Media Handling Style is big loss since it guarantees high professionalism.

Light-Hearted

God Tier personality, but you will never come across one. There are 4 players with this personality in a database of 1.5 million players. To get one from a youth intake would be incredible.

Perfectionists are incredibly ambitious and motivated to make their dreams come true. They never stop finding ways to improve themselves as well as hone out their weaknesses. Their professionalism on the training ground is a real asset however their very high standards among the squad may cause issues between players who don't share their motivation and work rate.

I personally think that this personality is a bit overrated. Its Professionalism is great, however not having Unflappable Media Handling Style available really hurts Pressure and Important Matches ranges and averages. Also High ambition and low temperament might become an issue if you have a wonderkid with this personality in a small club, because he'll soon want to join bigger clubs.

However if you can find one, Evasive Perfectionist is one of the best personalities in the game.

Perhaps the most famous Perfectionist in the game, Cristiano Ronaldo's personality in FM24.

Spirited

Perhaps the most underrated personality out there. Spirited players can handle the pressure really well and have good enough professionalism to provide good development along side their good performances on the pitch. Even with the lowest roll possible you still get 11 professionalism and 15 pressure. Not many personalities can boast that, especially personalities as common as this. Could be really impressive personality if Reserved Media Handling Style would be available.


Spirited player straight from my serbian team's youth intake. He should have no issues reaching his 159 potential with that kind of personality.

This is a tier that contains personalities that are still above average, but not as good as the personalities before. Some of these have notable weaknesses which is why they weren't picked to the previous tier. I expect to get a lot of feedback of this particular tier. Bring it on ;)

Iron Willed

Iron Willed players are competitive monsters with unrivaled ability to handle pressure. This extreme devotion to their sport is very rare (around 100 players if you have a big database) which makes this personality all the more disappointing if you somehow managed to obtain one. Obviously 20 pressure and high average on important matches is great, but that range in professionalism disappoints me big time in such rare personality. Missing out on two professionalism based Media Handling styles (Reserved & Confrontational) is devastating to this personality because getting high professionalism out of this personality is now even more rare.

Competes with Spirited, Resilient and Light-Hearted which you see all the time in players which is why this personality is in the 2nd tier. However if you can find one, this personality combined with evasive media handling style is one of the best personalities in the whole game. (Guaranteed 20 Pressure, 17 Important Matches and 15 Professionalism)

Model Professional

Pretty straightforward personality. Guaranteed 20 professionalism which is massive in terms of player development. However this personality is really rare (around 8 times more rare than Model Citizen), has high range and low average on pressure. You have to roll the dice on which kind of Model Professional player you end up getting.

However if you can find one, Model Professional with Unflappable Media Handling style is one of the best personalities in the game. (20 Professionalism 15-18 Pressure, 12-18 Important Matches)

Charismatic Leader

Resolute is a less edgy version of Perfectionist. They are determined individuals with great outlook on training. They are less ambitious and more squad friendly than perfectionists, but also lack the ability to withstand pressure as well as some other personalities.

I like Resolute. Its pretty common personality type and guarantees good professionalism and determination. I would prefer to have the Unflappable Media Handling Style available to this personality since it guarantees high pressure and important matches, increasing attribute averages slightly, also providing an option to scout based on personality and media handling style.

Professionalism in itself is great of course, especially in such common personality, but more or less all other attributes have wild ranges so you need to hope for some luck if you happen to get this personality to your youth intake player. Typical Professional personality. High Professionalism will make sure he reaches his impressive potential ability, but that 10 pressure is not ideal.

This tier is for personalities that are better than average, but not that exciting to have.

Also this is very rare personality (around 80 players in a whole database) so you kind of expect better.

Sporting

Honest personality's estranged cousin. Their difference is that Sporting players have high average on pressure while Honest players have high average on professionalism. Personally i would prefer professionalism in a situation like this where ambition and determination are already low and are handicapping the player development.

In itself this personality says next to nothing about a player's ability to develop or their ability to perform on the pitch which is probably the reason why this personality is assigned to vast majority of the players in the database.

However the key take on this personality is that professionalism, ambition and determination is capped to 14 at maximum so all but one of the good media handling styles are unavailable. You have to be somewhat lucky to even get a well developing player out of this personality. Also you have to beat the odds on pressure which has no cap, but has average of 9.

Unsporting

Unsporting players are mean spirited individuals who don't care about well being of other people nor consider the consequences of their actions from any other perspective than their own. However they are also determined and competitive individuals who play with grit, intensity and edge and often do well in their careers to the misery of others.

1 sportsmanship and decent determination is guaranteed, but the averages on pressure, important matches and professionalism are really encouraging. All good media handling styles are available which is good to have in when attribute ranges are so high.

Example of how good this personality can be. My Youth Intake goalie with 176 potential. With that professionalism his temper and rudeness just doesn't matter.

Ambitious

High ambition combined with that average professionalism and determination can make this personality pretty good from player development standpoint. However on field attributes like pressure and important matches are a total coin flip and this personality also suffers from low loyalty and below average controversy rating.

Realists are individuals who keep their feet on the ground and are not afraid to speak their mind even at the cost of sportsmanship or personal chemistry with a team mate. They have a little bit more manners than an unsporting person does, but they still aren't very high up on the list of people to invite to a team Christmas party. Professionally speaking, realists are determined players who often handle pressure and important matches well and do what they can to improve themselves.

Another personality on this tier that has potential to be really good. Has some promising averages on attributes that matter and sacrifices attributes that can be sacrificed on. I'd prefer a bit more ambition to help with player development though. All Media Handling Styles are available so good versions of this personality are easier to scout.

Great example of what Realist can be if you get lucky like me. This guy will develop into a good player who will thrive in big matches. How much more could you ask from a product of your academy?

Determined

High determination is guaranteed which is useful, rest are a total mystery though with mostly pretty good averages which is encouraging. All Media Handling styles are available so there is potential to find really good versions of this personality by scouting.

Something that bothers me is why the Ambition is capped to 11? Determined people tend to be ambitious as well and other determined personalities (Fairly Determined and Driven) both have high ambition. I just can't see a logical reason behind this.

Fairly Determined

They are carefree and fun players to have around, but their lack of professionalism really hurts their player development and needs to be mentored with a mentor who has high professionalism. 15-20 Pressure is great so there is a potential in this player to blossom to a better person if mentored correctly.

Some people avoid this personality like the plague, but i see potential in it. Low ambition and determination does really hurt this personality though. Its difficult to get the player to train well, hurting player development and in order to fix it sometimes you need lots of motivating and discipline to boost training ratings and sometimes even that is not enough. This is why players with this personality need to be mentored out of it. I've seen some wild hidden attributes masked behind this personality so its worth a gamble in my opinion.

Personality of a champion masked behind low ambition. Assigning him to a mentoring group as early as possible would be hugely beneficial in my opinion.

Temperamental

I don't like this personality. Having low temperament and high controversy by themselves aren't that detrimental. We've seen other personalities who don't do well on those either (perfectionist, realist, unsporting), yet have potential to be good personalities. However this personality is just not good enough.

Pressure and Important matches averages are surprisingly good and that's the end of the good news. Being restricted to 10 professionalism at maximum is subpar and really hurts development. Also determination and ambition averages are low which hurt development even more. On top of those negative aspects, you have to put up with their demands and episodes if they don't get what they want. There's just no saving grace for this personality. Mentoring them with light-hearted personality would be beneficial in my opinion.

Low Determination

Another personality that has potential to be decent even though it is in this tier. Low determination and ambition are fixable and all media handling styles are available. Players with this personality just need that mentor who can motivate them to ask more from themselves and be more determined to achieve their goals, perhaps a player with resolute personality (high determination, ambition and professionalism).

Easily Discouraged

Extreme version of "low determination" personality. 1 determination will be a problem on and off the field, also the low ambition is not great. But with right mentoring and with the right media handling style, you can still get an average personality out of this.

For personalities that are absolutely horrible that i avoid like the plague. If you see these personalities on players of your youth intake, you should be really disappointed.

Spineless

Spineless players have no ability to handle pressure whatsoever. Its one of the most important mental aspects of professional sports and they are so bad at it that no amount of mentoring will ever be enough to cover it. I don't ever sign players with this personality no matter how good current ability they have because they will never produce on the level that their attributes are. 16 controversy as well... right in the bin.

Slack

Slack players have no professionalism at all which is just unbearable and you can't recover from it by mentoring. Player's attributes will just diminish over time no matter how young player he is and how you train him. I don't even sign star players of my youth intake if they have this personality.

Casual

Bit better than slack, but its still not a viable personality at all. Even with 4 professionalism the mentoring just won't be enough. Determination and ambition are also bad which has extra bad effect on development. Also relatively common personality (23K players in the database) so you will see this every now and then and be immediately turned off.

Low Self Belief

Better version of spineless, but not good enough either for the similar reasons as i stated earlier. Doesn't provide anything to be excited about and that pressure/important matches rating is just so sub par.
