Render Method (Beginner-Friendly)
This guide will cover some compositing and rendering features in the EEVEE engine — specifically, how to create an outline render and its shadow on the background.

At the time of writing, the current Blender version is 4.5.3.

1. Scene Setup (yes, this is important)
This works only with the EEVEE render engine.
Select EEVEE, find the Film tab, and check "Transparent".
Now our render has no background.

Enable compositing display.
To do this, switch to the viewport mode and enable compositing preview either on the camera or always.

2. Go to the Compositing tab

Enable “Use Nodes”

Here are some useful hotkeys for working with nodes:

  • Shift + A - Open the node search menu
  • Ctrl + LMB drag - Cut a link between nodes
  • Shift + LMB drag - Create a reroute (helps organize your node setup neatly)
  • Ctrl + X or Delete - Remove unnecessary nodes

Common beginner mistakes:

  • 1. Connected the wrong outputs/inputs.
  • 2. Got lost in the node spaghetti and can’t find the issue.
  • 3. Added so many nodes that Blender choked.
  • 4. Got psychological trauma instead of magic.
  • 5. Forgot to save.
  • 6. Didn’t enable autosave.
  • 7. Misconfigured one node and Blender crashed.

3. Compositing
Now let’s move on to connecting the actual nodes

I won’t describe what every node does in detail, this guide is meant to be quick.
So, just follow the examples below.

As a background, I used this image:

And that’s it, we did it!

Now you have a node setup fully at your disposal.
Blender isn’t the kind of program where everything just works perfectly. It’s important to know how to ask the right questions, set priorities, and work with what you already have.
Blender has a huge and friendly community, so don’t be afraid to share your results or ask questions, there’s a good chance someone will help you out.

How to remove the background from the composite?
At the start of this tutorial, we disabled the render background and replaced it with an image.
Since that can confuse beginners, here’s how to fix it quickly:

1. Create an empty texture and import it into the project, you can do this directly in Blender.

2. Add it to your compositing workspace and connect it.

And that’s all!

Now you can admire the greatness of your completed work.
