Tips and Tricks - Before Starting
Before we start, here's some things you might find useful.

Set a keybind to "auto sort chest" and "auto place into nearby chest"
You can do so in Settings > Controls.

You might want to disable "Pause on focus loss"
if you ever find that you can't take screenshots or the game stops running in the background when you don't want it to because the pause menu pops up, you can disable "pause when focus loss" in settings > general.

Get more info from the Necesse wiki
The wiki is helpful. There is ZERO need to always have the wiki open tho, as the game progression is simple compared to other similar games.

I have more questions, where do I ask?
You can ask in the Official Discord, link in the game store page.

Will the guide be continuously updated?
The guide is still not done. More will be added over time
Progression Overview
Necesse uses a quest progression system, where quests are given by the Elder, to guide players on the intended progression path.

1. My Elder is not giving me quests.
The Elder only gives quests when they are inside a settlement. The tutorial guides you through this process. You just have to find the settlement flag and place it down somewhere. Don't worry, you can always move it to a new spot later on.

2. Can I not follow the intended progression path?
Yep, you can. There are only 3 notable "mandatory" bosses to access the endgame. However, they are definitely difficulty spikes if you choose to do so.

3. Is there a time limit?
Nope

4. Can I just stop progressing through the quest whenever I want, such as to focus on my settlement instead?
Yep, no issues there. You just don't have full access to all kinds of materials.

5. How many bosses are there?
I'll split the bosses into 3 categories, normal caves, deep caves, and incursions. They are different stages of the game where you need to defeat a "mandatory" boss to access.

For normal caves/early game, you fight 7 bosses in this location order : Forest > Snow > Dungeon > Plains > Swamp > Desert > Pirates

In deep caves/middle game, there are 6 bosses in pretty much the same order : Forest > Snow > Plains > Swamp > Desert > Desert Temple

As for Incursions/endgame, you have 7 bosses with no specific order.

6. There are deep caves? How do I access them?
Deep caves are the next level of progression after normal caves. You access them by fighting the last boss in that section, which will then drop you an item for you to access the deep caves.

7. My pickaxe is unable to break [insert block]
This means you're using too early of a pickaxe. Try upgrading them with material from a later cave (generally the same progression as bosses, until you find a certain pickaxe in one of the deep caves. Location : Deep Snow Caves, Name : Ice Pickaxe)

8. How do I earn money in the game?
If you're extremely early in the game and trying to find some money to hire the first few settlers, just go cave diving and breaking pots and finding gold rooms.
After getting farmers and setting up farmland, selling wheat they grew for you back to them is very profitable. Make sure the farmer is happy to maximize returns.
Late game, you can set up mob farms to sell bone arrows for extremely high returns.
Settlements Basics
Settlement is a big component of the game. With some simple set up, you can essentially farm many material passively, sell them for gold, and even get started on a auto sorting system.

I written a guide on settlement basics on the wiki. It uses (very) old screenshots but there has not been any notable difference besides the graphics since then. Guide: Settlement basics[necessewiki.com]

1. Is it mandatory to build a settlement?
Nope, you can progress through the game fine without one.

2. How do I get more settlers?
Settlers will visit your settlement from time to time, where most of them are recruitable. You may also recruit settlers (with higher cost) from a village nearby. You may also find settlers wondering around the world or in the underground to recruit too.

3. My Settlers are hungry, how do I feed them?
You need to give them a way to access food from a settlement storage. Use the link to the wiki guide I placed in the top of this section for an overview on it.

4. My Settlers aren't emptying their inventories.
You need to give them access to a valid settlement storage that they are allowed to place those specific items in.

5. My Settlers are emptying my chest. How do I stop them?
Remove the storage from settlement storage. If the list button in the storage menu has a Green House symbol and no cogs buttons, then it is not a settlement storage.

If you find settlers still moving/placing stuff from/into it, it is likely just because they were already on the way to the storage box before you disallowed them access to it. You can wait a while, or just break the box and replace it.

6. How do I craft Beds?
You craft them with wool and logs in a Carpenters Bench, which is crafted in a workstation.

7. What does settler happiness do?
It affects their shop prices (you buy items cheaper and sell items for more from them if they're happier) and how frequently they take breaks.

8. How do I increase settler happiness?
Things that affect happiness :
  • Food quality they last ate (raw, fine, gourmet)
  • Food variety they ate recently
  • Room size
  • Room furniture variety
  • Small village

Things that reduces happiness :
  • Untiled room floor
  • sharing a room with others

More info on happiness here[necessewiki.com]

9. What are Raiders and how do I defend against them
They are enemies who will come harm/kill your settlers and steal items from you once you have more than 3 settlers. Best way to defend against them is by gathering all your settlers together and fight army with army.

You can disable raiders in the settings > world.

10. How do I grow seeds?
You need farmland, craftable in the workstation.

11. Do I need farmers to grow seeds?
Nope, any settler with farming (all except elder and guard) can harvest and regrow crops. Farmers are the only one who can fertilize tho, but you can use bees to help with fertilizing too.

12. How do I get settlers to plant seeds in farmland?
They can't for now. You have to plant it yourself and they'll harvest and replant.

13. How do I give my settlers an axe to chop trees?
You don't, they have their own. The one in the equipment slot is their weapon.
Multiplayer
1. How to start a multiplayer server
Necesse has two main ways of creating a server for others to join : In-game hosting and a dedicated server.

2. Which should I choose between in-game hosting and dedicated server
They each have advantages over one another. In most cases, in-game hosting is sufficient.

In-game hosting:
  • + Much easier to set up
  • + Easy to connect
  • + Totally free
  • - Host must be online for the server to be online

Dedicated Servers:
  • + Server can be active 24/7 no matter who's online
  • - Harder to set up
  • - May cost money to rent a server hosting platform
  • - While possible to self host with a pc for free, the pc must itself be turned on and connected to the internet to keep the server online
  • + If you have a home dedicated server already, then this method is totally free as well

So, the main advantage of dedicated servers is that it can be online 24/7. If your group of players will only play at the same time or at least the host will be playing the whole time, then in-game hosting will be sufficient.

3. How to host my world in-game?
Main Menu > play multiplayer > host world
or
Join a world in singleplayer > pause menu > host world

4. How do players join a hosted world?
The easiest method is if everyone is friends with the host on steam. The host can then just send a steam game invite to everyone. The world may also appear in Main Menu > Play Multiplayer > Join a friend.

5. I can't seem to be able to join my friend's hosted world. The game is stuck on connecting
This is a common issue that is usually said to be caused by Steam server being overloaded. The most common fix is by changing steam download region so the game uses a different region's steam servers to host the world. After changing, try relaunching the game and hosting again. Non-host players should try changing regions too.

Another possibility is someone is using a VPN. Try turning off your VPN and try again.

6. The game is lagging for anyone besides the host. (things happening late, desync issues)
There has been quite a lot of reports of this issue in the official server. Similar to Q5 here, many people fixed the issue by changing download region. It's possible it might be a VPN issue too.

7. How do I host a dedicated server?
Quite a few contributors have written dedicated server guides on the wiki[necessewiki.com].

Remember to use Public IP adress. The ones that start with 192.168.x are usually private IPs

8. Can I assign more ram to my dedicated server?
You will have to edit the Necesse.json file. Search and edit the -Xms512m to a different value, like -Xms1024m or -Xms2048m. Then launch the server with the exe file instead of the bat file.
Credits to cyrusmidnight on discord.

9. How do multiple players work on each others settlements? How do I see the coordinates of my friend?
You can join the same team with the /createteam and /setteam command.

10. Will my settlement get raided when I'm offline?
Settlements will only get raided if a player whose on the same team as the settlement's owner is online.

11. Will my settlers continue working or go hungry when I'm offline?
They will if there are players nearby the settlement keeping it loaded. They will also always be loaded if there are players on the same team whose online.

12. My friend stopped playing. How do I obtain ownership of their settlement?
First, you need to be on the same team. Do /createteam then /setteam (player 2) (your team).
Next, break their settlement flag and place it back down. Don't worry, the settlement won't disband and the settings will stay. The only thing that won't stay is the name of the settlement and the owner.

Combat and Stats
1. What does difficulty affect?
Difficulty only affects enemy HP, enemy damage, and some other very minor stuff like if settlers can be revived or how many raiders spawn/how many settlers they kill each time.

It does not affect drops or enemy patterns.

More info here [necessewiki.com]

2. What difficulty should I play on?
Feel free to pick any difficultly you want. You can always change it if you find it too easy or hard. As a note, the game was balanced with Classic in mind.

3. What build do I use?
The four main classes are fairly balanced. Of course, some are easier to play against certain bosses than others. Here's my thoughts on the builds

Ranged : Consistent throughout the game
Melee : First build with access to solid AOE. Can be difficult in early game, but once you entered Midgame and have access to better Resilience gear, it becomes a tank build if you're not on the max difficulty.
Summoner : Has both highs and lows throughout the game. Might be the strongest build endgame.
Magic : Also have highs and lows, but the variety of weapon makes it very fun.

4. Can I change build whenever?
Yep. It is extremely easy to swap builds in this game as the only things that determine the build are weapons, armor, and trinkets. Most builds only swap weapons, just the helmet/headpiece, and a few trinkets.

5. What is Resilience? Should I use it?
Think of it as temporary HP. It's that yellow shield bar that appears below your HP when you have more than 0 max resilience.

Unlike HP, it regenerates as you attack enemies and will go down over time. However, with some trinkets you can maintain full resilience even outside combat.

Resilience is mainly helpful in lower difficulties as it allows players to face tank hits here and there. It is especially strong for melee builds, with their extremely high resilience regen rate.

More info here[necessewiki.com]

6. Can I change a gear's enchantment?
You can change enchantments by using an enchanting scroll or talking to a mage.

7. What enchantment is best?
This is a personal preference. I personally like go for damage buffing enchants like +crit, +damage, and +attack speed. Attack speed buff is especially nice for resilience build so you hit more to both do more damage and gain more resilience.

8. Can I expand my settlement size?
Yep. Go into the settlement setting then settings.

2. How do I set up chest sorting?
After adding a storage as a settlement storage (by clicking the green house button - it'll turn into a cog), you will be greeted by a filters page.

Basically, settlers will always move stuff from lower priority storage to higher ones, and ensure all storages of the highest priority set are filled before moving to the next priority.
Meanwhile, the filters tell the settlers what can belong in the chest.

Taking advantage of this, try setting up a top priority chest with only consumables allowed. This way, settlers will move consumables from all around the settlement into that chest.
If you place anything that isn't allowed into this food chest, settlers will then move them out and bring them to the highest priority chest that accepts them.

You may also set a limit, either in general to everything allowed or for specific items, that can be in the chest. For example, I can have a chest with just raw ingredients to cook with. However, without any limits settlers might eventually fill the whole chest with just corn or wheat. So, you can set "max stack of each item" to 1 or 2, ensuring that there is enough place for settlers to place every ingredient into that chest.
This is also helpful for getting settlers to fill up feeding troughs or similar where you don't want everything to go there. With feeding trough on top priority while your ingredients chest is on higher priority, without a limit to the trough, your settlers will attempt to fully fill up the troughs before any will go into your ingredients chest. Get around this by setting a limit of 10 or 20 to the troughs.

3. How do I get my settlers to auto expand my log farm?
If you turn off "replant chopped down trees" and select a sapling in "only plant sapling", they'll clear the area and replant saplings of those type. They will attempt to fill up the whole area in the most efficient way they know until they run out of space or saplings. If they run out of saplings, once they collected more (such as from chopping down trees growing there), they'll continue expanding until the forestry zone is filled.
Build Recommendations (mostly melee for now)
This section is not really a guide, but a list of notable mentions for gear you might find useful. Be sure to test them out yourself. Might contain minor spoilers.

Generally sorted by progression by each section.

Important : I mostly played Magic early game into Melee Resilience later on, so the part for others might be quite a bit shorter. 1.0 update also added a lot of new trinkets and weapons that I haven't been able to test them all yet.
I'm still collecting builds from the discord server, so feel free to drop your suggestions in the comments or the discord server and I'll add it into the guide.

Tips
  • Don't forget to check if your trinkets have upgrades. You can do so either with the in-game crafting guide given to you at the start of the game, or in the wiki.
  • Always remember that you can use buffs from food, potions, and later on - flags too.

Notes:
(1) means that the gear is from pre-deep caves
(2) means that the gear is from deep caves
(3) means that the gear is from incursions

A - Weapon
B - Trinket

(1A) I am a pre-deep caves weapon

General

(1A) Vulture staff (a summoner's weapon from the boss in desert caves)
Honestly one of the most consistent summons as it can fly across walls and easily catch up to enemies.

(1A) Wind Boots (crafted from Zephyr Boots, Force of Wind, and Runestone [found in plains caves]) // (2A) Ghost Boots (an upgrade/sidegrade of Wind boots)

(1B) Lifeline (from pirate island)

(2B) Frozen Soul (upgraded from the lifeline)

(2B) Bone Hilt (from deep desert caves)
Very strong for weapons and summons with high attack speed.

General for Resilience builds
Resilience builds are usable on all playstyles except summoners until pretty late into the game. Summoners can still play mixed builds where they might use ranged weapons to gain resilience too before then.

Resilience is very strong for melee once entered deep caves, and quite strong for range builds. Magic can make use of it but it's not that strong, while pure summoners can't at all.

The higher your difficulty, the less useful Resilience becomes.

(2B) Manica (crafted using (1B) Chain Shirt and (1B) Membrace)
Significant boost to Resilience builds

(2B) Challenger's Pauldron (from deep forest caves)
Very significant boost to Resilience builds

(2B) Clockwork Heart (from deep desert caves)
Very significant boost to Resilience builds

Melee

(1A) Katana (very rare, found in plains biome)

(1A) Lightning Hammer (from the Dungeons/place after the 2nd boss)

(1A) Necrotic Greatsword (swamp biome, purchasable from the friendly witch after defeating an evil witch

(2A) Reaper Scythe (from the boss in deep forest caves)
A favorite of many

(2A) Cryo Glaive (from the boss in deep snow caves)

(2A) Venom Slasher (from the boss in deep swamp caves)

(2A) Carapace Dagger (from deep desert caves)
Once one of strongest weapon in the game, now nerf'd, and still is one of the stronger weapons in the game.

(3A) Slime Glaive (from Slime Incursion)
Cryo Glaive, but bigger range

Magic

(1A) Blood Volley (craftable with materials from the Dungeons/place after the 2nd boss)
Homing projectiles goes brrr

Summoner

(1A) Stabby Bush (found in the wild, hidden in plain sight. Can be somewhat rare)

More coming soon
This is just an early version of the guide I'm pushing out early as there has been many questions in the official discord, to hopefully help as many players as possible.

Again, be sure to check the Necesse wiki too, and you can always come to the official discord server to ask more questions.

things to add:
  • setting up storage system
  • earning money

Hi! I really love your Necesse guide. Would it be alright if I translated it into Russian for the community? I'll be sure to credit you and link back to the original. Thanks!

Thanks man, I was wondering how the hell to farm.
Rainfury  [author] 21 Oct @ 6:54am
The builds in the game are fairly straightforward too. Most of the time the stuff from the next cave will be better than the one before. Of course, sometimes you just like the different effects or QoL (I used blood volley, a weapon from before the third boss, until the 9th boss because its homing abilities is so nice)

Talking to people in the discord you see everyone have different preference for weapon and armor progression too.

But I'll consider adding some notable mentions so others can go explore these favorite weapons from the discord too
