Beginner’s Guide: Keyboard Keys and Shortcuts

This guide describes the main functions of keys and shortcuts, designed to make Blender easier for beginners. All actions were tested in version 4.0.2, so some details may differ in other versions of Blender (in any case, you can always customize the settings to your preference).

Main action keys
Z / X / Y — Constrain to a specific axis during an action

1, 2, 3 — Quick switch between Vertex, Edge, and Face select modes

G — Move something ( + G: Slide along vertices or edges)

R — Rotate object ( + R: Free rotation)

E — Extrude selected Edges / Vertices / Faces

S — Scale

X / Delete — Delete

F — Connect / Fill

Y — Separate selected vertices, edges, or faces from the rest of the mesh — creates two disconnected parts, but still one object

L — Select all linked vertices

V — Rip Vertices / Edges

J — Connect vertices with an edge

P — Separate into a new object

B — Box select

C — Circle select

Y — Split side (duplicate entry — same as “Separate” above)

H — Hide selection

A — Select all

I — Inset Face

K — Knife tool ( C — cut through, A — constrain cut by angle or axis )

> — Pivot Point menu (center of rotation/scaling)

O — Proportional Editing (button looks like a target icon)

Alt (+ Shift to continue) — Select loop of Faces / Edges / Vertices
Keyboard shortcut
Ctrl + Shift + R — Add supporting edge loops on both sides of the selected loop (Edge Crease / Bevel support)

Ctrl + Shift + Z — Redo last undone action (one step forward)

Alt + Shift + S — Shrink/Fatten along normals (Round or smooth the selected geometry)

Shift + Ctrl + B — Vertex Bevel tool

Ctrl + Alt + Z — Open Undo History menu

Ctrl + B — Bevel Edges or Vertices ( Mouse wheel changes segments, C — clamps overlap, P — controls profile shape, V — Converts edges to vertices )

Ctrl + T — Triangulate faces (or activates material/texture functions if Node Wrangler add-on is enabled)

Ctrl + X — Dissolve selected Faces / Edges / Vertices while keeping topology connected

Shift + Tab — Toggle Snapping for transformations (magnet icon on the top bar)

Alt + S — Move vertices/edges/faces along their normals

Ctrl + 1–5 — Add Subdivision Surface modifier with the specified level

Alt + V — Duplicate selected Vertex / Edge / Face

Shift + R — Repeat last extrude action

Ctrl + L — Select all linked geometry

Alt + Z — Toggle X-Ray mode

Alt + G / R / S — Reset Location / Rotation / Scale

Shift + D — Duplicate selection and move

Shift + H — Hide everything except the selected

Shift + Z — Toggle Wireframe mode (quick X-ray)

Ctrl + Z — Undo last action

Alt + A — Deselect all

Alt + H — Reveal hidden geometry

Ctrl + I — Invert selection

Shift + A — Add new object

Shift + V — Edge Slide (Edge control tool)

Ctrl + J — Join selected objects

Ctrl + R — Loop Cut (add new edge loop)

Ctrl + M — Mirror selection

Ctrl + C — Copy

Shift + RMB — Set 3D Cursor location

Ctrl + RMB — Extrude to cursor position

Shift + LMB — Add to selection

Ctrl + Alt + LMB — Select edge ring
Action menu
Ctrl + L — Used for linking or transferring data between objects

Ctrl + E — Open Edge menu (e.g. subdivide, bridge, split)

Shift + O — Proportional Editing falloff menu

Ctrl / Alt + P — Parent actions menu

Shift + M — Move to Collection (or to another group)

Alt + E — Extended Extrude options menu

Ctrl + M — Mirror menu (mirror selected geometry)

Ctrl + A — Apply transformations menu

Ctrl + G — Add to Group / Group menu

Ctrl + Tab — Mode selection pie menu

Ctrl + H — Hook menu (parenting / constraint options)

Shift + S — Cursor & Selection menu (Snap / Cursor to…)

Alt + N — Normals menu

Ctrl + V — Vertex menu

Ctrl + F — Face menu

Alt + M — Merge / Split menu

M — Collections menu or Merge Vertices menu

P — Separate geometry menu

N — Properties (Transform / Item / Tool panels)

T — Tool Shelf (Tools menu)

. (Period key) — Pivot Point menu

H — Hide selected

~ (Tilde key) — View menu (Navigation pie: top/front/side view etc.)

Z — Shading menu (Wireframe / Solid / Material / Rendered view)
Project
Shift + Ctrl + O — Open Recent Files menu

Ctrl + Shift + S — Save As (save project under a new name)

Ctrl + S — Save Project

Ctrl + O — Open Project

Ctrl + N — New File / New Project

F4 — File Menu (quick access to file operations)
Navigation
Ctrl + Alt + Q — Split window into 4 equal views (Top, Camera, Front, Right)

Ctrl + Alt + Space — Hide all panels, leaving only the viewport

Shift + Space / Ctrl + Space — Maximize editor window (full screen)

Ctrl + Alt + W — Open a new Blender window

Shift + F — Fine-tune camera view (fly/adjust camera)

Shift + ~ (Tilde) — Free movement / Fly mode

Ctrl + ~ (Tilde) — Toggle Gizmo visibility

Shift + F1–F12 — Switch between windows

F2 — Rename selected object

F12 — Render the scene from the active camera

F3 — Search menu

Middle Mouse Button (MMB) — Rotate viewport around object

Scroll wheel — Zoom in/out

Alt + Scroll wheel — Timeline frame scroll

Shift + MMB — Pan viewport
Modes
Ctrl + Tab — Mode selection menu (in Edit Mode: switch between Vertex, Edge, and Face select

Tab — Toggle between Object Mode and Edit Mode

Shift + F — Free camera / Fly Mode

F12 — Render image from active camera
Numpad
Numpad 1, 3, 7, 9 — Move camera to view along axis ( + Ctrl for opposite view )

Numpad / — Local view (isolate selected object)

Numpad + / - — Zoom in / out

Numpad . (period) — Focus / Frame selected

Numpad 5 — Toggle Orthographic / Perspective view

Numpad 0 — Camera view
Animation
Shift + Ctrl + Alt + I — Delete all keyframes

Ctrl + Alt + D — Delete driver

Shift + Left / Right Arrow — Jump to first / last frame

Ctrl + T — Add driver or constraint

Alt + K — Clear Keying Set

Right / Left Arrow — Move one frame forward / backward

Alt + P — Clear parent of the object

Ctrl + C / V — Copy / Paste keyframes

Shift + E — Extrapolate keyframes

Alt + I — Delete keyframe

Shift + D — Duplicate keyframes

Ctrl + P — Set parent

Ctrl + D — Assign driver

Alt + H — Reveal animation curves

K — Select Keying Set / open Keying Set menu

S — Scale keyframes in time

X / Delete — Delete selected keyframe

T — Choose keyframe interpolation type

I — Insert keyframe

V — Change keyframe type

G — Grab / move keyframe
