NSAU Shields
By jeremylee
NSAU's shield technology was originally designed to deflect the harmful radiation from the Sun. As inhabitants of Mars that has a very thin atmosphere, having such a shield is a necessity for survival. Naturally, the shield technology evolved from energy deflection to physical deflection.

NSAU's shields are always evenly projected outwards like a bubble and will only block objects that appear to be of threat. Ie, massive object moving at high speeds or energy of high concentration (like a laser bolt).

What's so special about their shields then? It's bulky, unwieldy and tend to absorb more damage than it should. This guide will describe how it can be used to your advantage.

Overview
NSAU Shields are the primary and the only defense mechanism that can regenerate itself. NSAU ship hulls cannot be repaired.

Charging

All NSAU ships have a shield generator that can recharge shields over time. Each shield generator have a different capacity but all charges at the same percentage rate. This means, regardless of ship types, a NSAU ship's shields will be fully charged after roughly 2 minutes.

Damage Indication

For a visual reference, a soft hit produces a light blue distortion that is short-lived. A hard hit like the one below will produce a much longer effect with the shields fighting to tackle the projectile that hit.

Of course, multiple hits will also add to the visual load of the shields absorbing the damage.

Dormant Mode

When NSAU ships are in dormant mode, their shields will also be deactivated. This means, although the ship in dormant mode suffers a significant vulnerability, it could restore to its original shield strength when it awakes.

Of course, shields do not recharge while in dormant mode. Therefore, if you go into dormant mode with 50% shields, you'll restore 50% shields when you awake from it.

Bacteria Infestation

Basically, vacuum-resistant bacteria that chews their way into your hull. A primary weapon of the Slavic Sirerians.

These bacteria only survive if they consume material, including the super hard carbon composite material on NSAU ships.

However, there's none of such material when shields are projected. This means NSAU shields are not affect by bacteria infestation.

Do note however, if a bacteria infestation has taken place within the ship; regeneration of shields will not eliminate the infestation!

Damage Distribution
Strengths

NSAU shields doesn't have a "side" of weakness. Shields are evenly projected all round and will redistribute energy to deal with hits.

Weaknesses

NSAU shields tend to take more damage from armour piercing projectiles such as the UNC Railgun[foresightrts.com] or UNC Tactical Railgun[foresightrts.com].

Damage Transfer

A damage transfer occurs when the shields no longer have enough energy to fully deflect the oncoming projectile. As a result, part of the damage that cannot be absorbed by the shields will be transfered onto the hull.

Shield Generation

While covered in the overview, NSAU shields will never cease to generate shields even when the ship is heavily damaged.
Shield Overdrive
Special Ability of the NSAU

This ability is only available to NSAU players.

What's Shield Overdrive?

As the name suggests, it's a mode that is set upon shielded ships to redirect all power (except engines) to their shield generators, causing it to go into an overdrive mode.

What are the effects?

In this mode, ships recharge shields twice as fast but all energy-based weaponry are temporarily disabled.

This means, even in Shield Overdrive mode, the NSAU Lens Frigate[foresightrts.com]'s Aeolis Mons Missile Racks[foresightrts.com] can still fire at the enemy.

Who can utilize Shield Overdrive?

Unfortunately, not all ships and structures can utilize Shield Overdrive. The primary energy source for it comes from energy-based weaponry. That means if a ship or structure isn't armed with energy-based weaponry, there's nothing to transfer energy onto the shields and thus Shield Overdrive cannot work on certain vessels.

Such as:
  • All NSAU production structures.
  • NSAU Garrison Ship
  • NSAU Explorer

Value of Shield Overdrive

The obvious value of shield overdrive is that you can now hide your forces at a corner and activate the mode; allowing your ships to quickly recover their shields for their next battle. NSAU ships cannot be repaired anyway.

Strategically, it changes the way players use NSAU ships compared to UNC ships.
Tactical Combination
NSAU Shields by design

As mentioned in the overview, NSAU shields are spherical by design and will cover a certain distance away from the projecting ship.

The larger the ship, the larger the distance covered.

Shield Combination

It's possible to combine shields together. All the player needs to do is to keep 1 or more ships close to each other.

When their shields are combined, there'll not be be any visual indicators. However, enemies will find it hard to penetrate the shields. While this can turn the tide of the battle, it also carries a high risk.

With a strong enemy fleet attacking, every ship's shields will be made to absorb all the damage. This will also mean that when the shield is penetrated, almost every ship's shields will be down.

Some combinations are natural due to the size of the structure, their shields are projected far outwards.

Fighter Protection

Shield combinations usually lead to better fighter/bomber survival rates since they're protected by a complex array of shields.

Strategic Push

With the right combination, a player can push the enemy base using combined shields. In some instances, some ships can even have shield overdrive turned on to enhance the pushback or tanking.

Return Damage

Because of the shield radius, some weaponry that deals splash damage will find their projectiles exploding prematurely due to collision with the shields.

As a result, the splash damage takes place very far away from the intended target and sometimes can even splash onto self. With a strong shield combination, it's possible to return sufficient splash damage to the enemy (on top of status effects) that will eventually destroy the enemy.

P.S. the splash damage alone isn't the primary means of defeating the enemy this way. It's the status effect the projectile splash across that does the real damage. See here[foresightrts.com] for more details.
