Source engine / old game introduction
By Aφεντικhόrne
This is for the newer gamers that haven't experienced source engine's mechanics, older games' mechanics, as well as Cry of Fear-only mechanics. Share this with newer gamers if they're struggling with the basics.

Heads up
Favorite this guide to be able to find it easily again, or share it with someone struggling with CoF. Thumbs up to help others find it and to give me dopamine!!!!!
Saving
You can only save by interacting with these things

Jumping
Always be mindful of what's above your head as you might be bumping your head if you can't move further or your movement gets stopped.

Crouch jumping
Crouch jumping in the Source engine "packs" your legs to your chest, so if you use it mid-air, you'll be able to reach greater heights, and fit through smaller gaps.

Jump distance
Jumping without moving beforehand will not allow you to move forward, so this might be why you can't get on top of things, if you're hugging the wall under it. Consider these a feature, as they can allow you to customize the length of your jump depending on what the situation calls for. Small gap? If you walk you might overshoot the jump, but not if you jump while crouch walking.

Jumping safely
Leaning your camera downwards can let you see where the platforms are.

Since jumping is momentum based, you may want to go to the furthest edge of the platform, to build up more speed.
Interacting
Doors
To use keys, take the steps you would for opening the door, but before interacting with it, open the inventory, click on the key, then click on "Use".

Unlike Half-Life 1, you don't push doors. And the only keybind that will do anything is Interact ("E")

Notes
You don't have to remember everything; Simon will be adding clues you find to his notebook automatically, even if they're not acquired in paper form, he'll write it down. Cry of Fear is a buggy game and you cannot rely on this feature 100%. The longer you play the more likely it is for this feature to get wonkier. Particularly when Simon has to write stuff down, getting the same clue twice (i.e. by reloading to a previous save) has a big risk of messing up your notes.
Combat
Headshot damage
In HL1, headshots only mattered when firing guns. In CoF, no one has confirmed that it makes a difference. Since headshots seemingly don't do increased damage, it is better to avoid the enemies weirdly-moving heads for center mass.

Reloading
Simon will lose ALL REMAINING bullets in the magazine when reloading magazine based weapons. Non-magazine fed firearms will have different reloading rules.

Easy difficulty strategy
This one is for the homies that struggle with combat. Your first melee hit will stagger enemies, and when using only the knife (to be able to slice), it attacks quickly enough to kill most enemies before they can damage you. Even if they do, syringes can heal you from 1% to 100% on Easy so don't be afraid to face your monsters, as it were.
Skipping
Stick to one side of the wall, wait until the monster blocking you takes several steps towards you, and then juke around it. You want to either be running or dodging past monsters, as they'll usually start immediately attacking you when you first touch them while you have to do a 180 around them to escape them.

Crashing
The most important part

Official 64-bit crash patch
https://www.moddb.com/games/cry-of-fear/downloads/cry-of-fear-crash-patch-for-64-bit-users

All you have to do is replace the .exe with the .exe you get from ModDB. The author "ruMpel" is CoF's dev. This is a thing you have to do manually because he thought 64-bit systems wouldn't catch up. At any rate, more info isunder the page's "Description" tag and you can log in to comment on the crash patch if you want.

Other measures
Try these individually, and if they don't work by themselves, then combine them.
a) Select "Properties".
In the "Launch Options" field, copy and paste the following line: -gl -num_edicts 2048 -heapsize 1024000 -w 1920 -h 1080 -fullscreen

b) Windows Settings (Win + I) → System → Display → Graphics.
Click "Browse" and locate the cof.exe game file.
Select it and click "Options".
Set "GPU Settings" to "High Performance".

Unfortunately, CoF is a port of a mod of a game from an engine that released 27 years ago, it will not run properly on all systems for reasons that mortals can never be fully aware of.

I have other guides on CoF those those struggling with it, but other than that...

Have fun and thanks for reading!

I don't think I'll be making any more guides on Cry of Fear since there's not much more to be said. If there's a need for it I might update guides or answer to comments. Really hoping this guide helps the gamers with no Source engine experience enjoy CoF.
