Hello engineer!

I, the developer, am here today to get you going setting up your very own skin!

Skins are used to allow customization of your character, which you'll see as both your first person hand, as well as when you or someone else views you in 3rd person.

This can even be changed while playing using the Personalization menu.

When you're playing in multiplayer, these are automatically transferred so you're friends can also see your skin!

Skins are stored locally in your game files at [GameDirectory]/personalization , with the ability to get them from the Steam Workshop, or provide one yourself!
Skin Formats
Skins in Voxel Eras come in 2 main forms:
  • Standard, which has the arms as 4x4, this is generally used for more masculine or bulky avatars as it provides wider shoulders and bigger arms, but may also be used for older skins you find.
I'm sorry it's tiny, Valve doesn't like pixel art

  • Slim, which has the arms a bit slimmer at 3x4, is somewhat likely to be the skin you're using, as this is generally a bit closer to "human" proportions, as well as used for more feminine or petite avatars.
I'm sorry it's tiny, Valve doesn't like pixel art

Both of these skin formats are compatible with the "Steve" and "Alex" formats used by Minecraft, being Standard and Slim respectively, with the addition of being able to have ears!

When setting up your skin, make sure to select the Standard or Slim player model based on which format your skin is, otherwise it may not appear as expected.
Ears

The first two sections highlighted in red are the main part of the ear you likely will want to work on first. These are rendered as little cubes.

The last two sections highlighted in blue are the outer layer of the ear, where you may want to apply things such as fluff or volume, being just a small surface layer.
Adding Your Skin
To add your skin, you can go into the Personalization menu and either drag the file into the associated box, click "Folder" to open the directory, or click "Workshop" to get a skin from / upload a skin to the Steam Workshop.

Add a PFP on the left, a skin on the right, as well as opening the folder or viewing the Steam Workshop.
While you are here, you are also able to provide an 8x8 image as a profile picture that will be used for your chat icon, as well as any other UI element that lists players.

Absolutely tiny
Ok, but actually, here's a bigger version:

Examples for both a skin and profile picture can be found in [GameDirectory]/mods/voxel_eras/assets/customization
Known Issues
  • Some parts of the model may not perfectly follow the format. This will be corrected in a future update.
  • The ears can have small line artifacts which is the same issue items have, as the UVs aren't quite right. This will be corrected in a future update.
Congrats!
You can now enjoy your very own avatar!

If you feel you're missing something, the in game tips (?) likely will answer your questions, but if not, please let me know!

Anyways, best of luck engineer!
