First things to consider when you're stuck on an item
  • Are there any notes or tarot cards that you haven't solved yet? They may lead you to the item you need. The tarot cards should all be solvable immediately after receiving them. Some of the notes you may have to hold onto for a little while but a lot of them you also should be able to tick off very soon after getting them. If you cannot find an item that fits the request, have a look back and see if there's anything still to find!

  • Have you labelled items before confirming their identity? If you've labelled something from speculation, you may be overlooking it in your search for an unlabelled item. It can be a good idea to keep things clear by using a different colour label for ones that have been confirmed correct and for items you are guessing.

  • Are there any reference books that you've been told about but haven't found? They may contain key information for identification!

  • Have you panned to either side of the shop and below? There are shelves that can't be seen from the main section of the shop where you might have something you've not noticed!
Different types of clues
The entries for each item can give very different information to each other, so I will break down some of the different ways clues are given in the next sections. All the information given in the entry is given for a reason, so try and think in terms of what type of clue it is and that should give you an idea of where to find the answer.

Common sense descriptors
These clues may be the hardest as they are more subjective. This includes when an item is described in normal, non-mystical terms, such as:

  • weight (use the scales!)
  • "simple" (think plain, no intricate detailing)
  • "tall" (literally a big item compared to most others)
  • "nonthreatening" or "protective" (these generally refer to animals)
  • "macabre" or "sinister" (these may refer to things made of bone or with skulls/death referenced)
  • something shown in the image of the entry - sometimes the images given are more artistically representative of the role of the item, but if they appear to be showing the item itself, pay attention to how it looks!
Functional descriptors
These clues require you to think about how the item might be used and so what shape it might need to take for that role.

  • "Worn" - Think necklace, ring, mask - you can't wear a big stone tower!
  • "Used to store" - Needs to be a container of some kind
  • Ritual use - May need to meet very specific requirements. Remember: your shop contains antiques, not brand new items! If something is used in a specific way for a ritual, it's safe to assume it will show signs of that ritual having happened to it before. So, you're not just looking for something that has the potential to be used in a certain way, you're looking for signs of it having already been done. I will give some slightly more specific examples of these below, marked as a spoiler:
Burnt - It will show blackening and ash residue
Dipped in blood - There will be dried blood
Worn permanently - If it can't ever be taken off, then it won't ever have been taken off!

Magical descriptors
Some items will need to be identified based on more specific details they possess. For this, you need to think in terms of what might be the source of the items power. This will involve using the other reference books in your collection, which I will remain vague on in case you have not found any/all of them yet. But some things to consider:

What does the object do? Is it protective, harmful, providing a special skill? If so, check the index and reference books for specific features that bestow that power. More detail below, marked as spoiler, on what exactly you're looking for here.

Are there any crystals that give the specific power? If so, the item may feature them
Are there any symbols that relate to the specific power? If so, they may be engraved somewhere on the item.
Are there any specific curses related to the item?

Related items
If you're at a loss from the main description, it's a good idea to click on any of the bold keywords in the description and check what other entries you have that share a theme with your mystery item. Some entries have useful pictures while others don't, and it may be that a picture or information from a different entry may be key to identification.

  • Relating to a god - remind yourself of who that God is, what rituals people have for them, any pictures of them that may be in other entries.
  • Relating to similar items - something may share an appearance or similarity with another item, so remind yourself if the other entries have more details you've forgotten!
