Not all bonkers are created equal. Here’s who you should be unlocking & playing right now for the smoothest runs:

CL4NK

Starts with the Revolver (scales with crit, attack speed, projectile count — god-tier combo)

Solid stats, easy clears, and smooth scaling

Unlock: Beat Forest Tier 1

Calcium

Literal speed demon. Zooms through maps and gets tankier the faster you go

Pairs beautifully with movement speed tomes

Unlock: Complete character challenges

Megachad

High-risk, high-reward. Starts strong with damage-scaling tomes

Slower to ramp but melts bosses later

Unlock: Level the Damage Tome to 7+

Sir Oofie

Starter boy. Usable early on but struggles mid-to-late game

Use if: You’re into pain or nostalgia

Weapon & Tome Synergies
A good weapon is cool. A weapon that synergizes with 4 tomes and 2 items? Game-breaking.

Must-Have Tomes

  • Attack Speed – Every build benefits. Stack it early.
  • Projectile Count – Especially good on multi-hit weapons (Bones, Revolver, Banana)
  • XP Gain – Level faster = win faster
  • Damage – Needed for bosses
  • Movement Speed – Great for dodging and Calcium’s passive

Item Combos You Shouldn’t Sleep On

Synergy Builds

Crit Machine
  • Forbidden Juice (crit chance)
  • Overpowered Lamp (on-crit procs)
  • Crit Damage Up
Pairs best with fast weapons like Revolver or Bones.

Projectile Spam
  • +Projectile Count Tome
  • Bouncer Gloves
  • Widen Spread Items
More bullets = more fun.

On-Hit Procs
  • Moldy Cheese (poison)

Focus on weapons that hit frequently and apply effects.

Crit Clank
Character: CL4NK
Core: Revolver, Crit Juice, Attack Speed
Playstyle: Glass cannon. Machine-gun crits that delete waves if you stay moving.

Speed Demon Calcium
Character: Calcium
Core: Bones, Movement Speed, Projectile Count
Playstyle: Zoom across the map, clear everything in your path. Don’t get hit.

Aura AoE Overload
Weapon: Aura
Core: AoE size, On-Hit Items, Area Damage Tomes
Playstyle: Walk into mobs. They melt around you. Passive farming monster.
Quick Tips for Survival
  • Stack global buffs early — attack speed, XP gain, projectile count
  • Don’t grab weapons that don’t match your build
  • Use shrines after you’ve cleared enemies or pre-boss
  • Movement speed = survivability
  • Don’t touch Curse Shrines unless you’re very confident

One thing not mentioned is how potent Luck can be. I've had runs where I've focused tome upgrades & item/stat collection first, and almost every weapon upgrade was red/gold calibre (maybe 1 in 8 was "only" rare). Depending on shrines & items collected early on can free up a tome slot for Luck (eg crit flasks, run socks, batteries) else favour clover items if you're using tome of the stat given by the other items offered. xp, proj cnt, shield are my pref'd default tomes.

Also Monkeh deserves some love - predominantly Forest, but even in Desert can do wall jump out mid-air jump back tricks to avoid mobs + fall dmg

Sir Oofie id say struggles early game the most, slow weapon, cant only hit in front, slow movement. Exploding green bugs are a nightmare. Slap at least %15 speed boost on him early, then work on size buffs so his sword can hit behind him. Then you can focus on other buffs.

Another survival tip: Get atleast 1 shield. If you have ANY shield, you can take any hit and survive because it will break the shield and not hurt your hp

Cl4nk with the Attack Speed or Quantity tome can be awesome especially if you get enough Bullet Bounces on level ups.
