Biomes

For the sake of this guide, I'm breaking down Earth Like into 5 distinct biomes (from left to right).

Desert : Lots of sand, nothing really grows here, didn't find any harvestable plants.
Savanna : On the border between Desert and Temperate zones. Large areas of grass with scattered small bushes. Fruit is common in this biome, some mushrooms but not much else.
Temperate : This region is characterised by large Deciduous trees. All farmable food types can be found here.
Coniferous : The northern foothills area. Trees are mainly conifers, no snow but often bordering snow. All food types can be found here but are less common.
Polar : Large areas of snow and long days. I didn't find any farmable plants.
Turn down Grass Density

I'd recommend turning down the Grass Density to 0, this makes spotting the plants a lot easier.
It's an old slightly cheesy trick that's often used to spot ore patches but works here too. The grass is gone leaving just the harvestable plants visible.

To do this, under options, select Graphics and turn Grass Density down to 0. You can reset it later.
Harvestable plant types and where to look for them
This is mainly where I found them and in what frequency, so is a bit subjective.

Fruit

These are by far the most common plant I found. They're found in all biomes except Desert and Polar. They also have the longest grow time when farming them.
The bushes are relatively tall so easy to spot. They seemed most common in Savanna biomes, often with two or three visible at the same time.

Mushrooms

Mushrooms were probably the second most common thing I found, relatively easy to spot as the fallen logs they grow on are quite large. I found them in all biomes except Desert and Polar. Probably most common in Temperate.

Grain

Used for flour. I didn't find any in Savanna/Grasslands (oddly). They seemed to be most common in Temperate with some in Coniferous.

Vegetables

By far the most elusive plant to find, at least for me. They don't seem very common and I found 5 fruit trees to 1 Vegetable plant. The only biomes I found them in were Temperate and Coniferous but you have to look hard.

A few more general tips

  • Plants are grown in Farm Plots, these need to be irrigated from below with conveyors and an Irrigator on the network.
  • Even on Earth Like, extreme weather like sandstorms will kill them pretty much instantly if they're exposed. Covering them with some glass isn't enough, they need to be in an air tight greenhouse with doors.
  • You can auto harvest them using Collectors, one Collector directly above each plot, or move a Collector around above them. The collector has to be on a subgrid, if you connect the Collector directly to the same grid as the farm plot it won't work.
  • There is no way to auto-plant in vanilla. I'm sure mods will be made.
  • If you put the farm plots on subgrids, they will not be considered as being inside the air tight farm. E.g. Rotor over some static collectors, the rotor subgrid isn't protected against the elements or vacuum.
  • Once you have one sample of a plant, you can put it into the Food Processor to make a seed from it. Each mature plant produces 2-3 of the food type, so one seed becomes 3 and so on.
  • The Food Processor is accessed under the Production tab (like Assemblers). It has two modes under Blueprints at the top, food production and seed production.
  • Apparently they do respawn in the same location after you harvest them, so you can GPS mark them.

I needed this. I thought dying would reset my hunger since I was late on the algae farm and didn't realize that survival kits can make the basic food. The struggle is real. Although its nice the engineers don't get thirsty.
they dont work on subgrids(((
