Better Fishing — What it changes, simply explained

TL;DR (Too Long; Didn’t Read)
This mod lets you fine-tune fishing so it feels fair, fast, and readable—especially on small ponds and pools. You can keep pure vanilla behavior or switch to Better Fishing’s tuned tables and helpers.

What you get
Adjustable, smarter, lighter shore detection
Detects “shore” with a small, fast check—great for tiny ponds and swimming pools. No more “always near shore” just because the water is small.

Adjustable casting distance
Set a less frustrating casting range (mod default: 18 tiles, range 16–20).
(Vanilla is 16 tiles.)

Adjustable time-bonus windows
Configurable morning and evening windows, plus a simple multiplier for bite rate.

Adjustable weather multipliers (fog / wind / rain) so you can tune them to your liking.
(Vanilla: fog reduces bite chance, rain raises it.)

Adjustable near-shore size behavior
A single “Near-Shore Blend” slider that gently shifts odds toward smaller fish when you’re close to shore.

Switch Catch Size Tables: Vanilla ↔ Better Fishing
Flip between the game’s vanilla size tables and Better Fishing’s tables (explained below).
Note: switching tables cleanly requires a quick reload (back to main menu or reload your save).

Why use “Better Fishing”?

Vanilla treats you as “near shore” out to 7 tiles.
The game checks a 15×15 square around your target (±7 tiles in both directions) for any shore tile. If one is found, you’re flagged as near shore. In that state, Vanilla halves the Medium and Big chances and moves those halves into Small—which drastically boosts Small.
On top of that, your first catch is always Small.
Result: many casts feel punished on small ponds/pools, and your first fish is guaranteed Small.

Vanilla uses the character’s local air temperature—but it’s trivial to bypass.
The game reads air temperature around the player and penalizes cold fishing heavily (e.g., strong reductions below ~15 °C).
But because you can raise local air temperature with a campfire (or a similar heat source), you can simply warm the spot and negate the penalty on demand.
Result: the temperature check becomes effectively redundant—players can set the “right” temperature themselves before casting.

Vanilla is strict about maximum fish size by skill.
A skill-based size limit caps your result.
Even as your skill rises, that ceiling often keeps you in Small/Medium territory for a very long time.
Result: at mid skill (e.g., L6), you still mostly pull Small/Medium.

Vanilla punishes poor visibility and wind.
Weather multiplier is 0.8 in fog (≥0.4) or strong wind (≥0.5), but 1.2 in rain.
Result: in fog or strong wind, Vanilla lowers your odds drastically.
With Better Fishing, you choose what’s fair.

You can keep Vanilla behavior or enable Better Fishing’s options to:
  • use a smaller, lighter shore check (great for tiny ponds);
  • set a clear, consistent casting distance (Vanilla is 16 tiles; Better Fishing default is 18, range 16–20);
  • tweak time-of-day bonuses (you can redefine windows and strength);
  • adjust weather and temperature influence (rain/fog/wind/temperature multipliers);
  • switch between Vanilla catch tables and Better Fishing’s tuned tables for a smoother Small→Medium→Big progression.
Vanilla piles on hidden penalties (wide “near shore,” cold/fog hits, strict size ceilings) that make early- and mid-level fishing feel stingy—especially on small waters. Better Fishing keeps things readable and tweakable so you can dial in a fair experience.

How to use the options

Toggle features on/off (Vanilla ↔ Better Fishing) with checkboxes.

Sliders only apply when their matching checkbox is enabled:
(e.g., “Better Shore Detection” must be on for “Shore Radius” to matter).
Switching between Vanilla Tables and Better Fishing Tables is a data change—reload after you flip it.

FAQ
Can I keep everything Vanilla and just use the lighter shore check?
Yes—leave the table switch on Vanilla, and enable only Shore Detection.

Do I need to restart to see slider changes?
No. Only the table switch (Vanilla ↔ Better Fishing) needs a quick reload.

Does this mod edit the map or add items?
No—pure logic & numbers. Safe with saves.

Is this mod comatible with ...
I see no reason why this mod would be incompatible with anything. It only exposes vanilla baseline values and lets the user adjust them. It doesn’t add new systems or change how fishing works at its core. In other words, there really shouldn’t be any Workshop mod that conflicts with this one.

I'm trying to set up my mod list for a server ahead of time. So having sandbox means less waiting in the future when I have to go to all the mods that use mod options instead. As it will likely takes months or a year if those authors respond at all. Meanwhile, once mp is out, giving people insane game breaking advantages they will actively abuse... Thus why I spend the time to let authors know of this to prevent that issue or before mods get abandoned.

Sandbox is just better overall. Or the option to enable either sandbox or mod options.

Looking for that "but until then" moment. As otherwise the mod works great and adds "depth" to fishing. That is a full improvement over vanilla!

@Cyrisa before multiplayer comes out I'll move it to the sandbox settings!
But until then its save in the modoptions.

Although - I think the settings could be easier to understand .. maybe I'll adjust that in tthe near future.

Thanks for your feedback!

Can we have the option to put all the settings into sandbox instead of mod options?

Sandbox is more bulletproof for when MP comes out as well.

Is it compatible with Caster Plus?

I removed the devtools, it was a leftover from testing the logic.
And you can't toggle ui elements ingame with the mod options. I would have had to integreate it into the game somehow / keybind or a button somewhere.

Add a Mod Options toggle to enable or disable the FishingDebugWindow panel when Debug mode is active.

Thank you very much(again). Your mods are truly QoL mods.
