Star Collection
The Star Collection is a very important system, ESPECIALLY for F2P players. This is the system you need to interact with to keep unlocking more Heroes for free.

The quick explanation is that you gain one Star Collection level every time you upgrade a hero. You can upgrade a hero by getting enough Hero Memories to hit whatever the next xp threshold is. It's important to note that as a hero levels up, it requires more Zeni and more Memories every time. Considering that your Star Collection will always only go up one level per hero level, that makes it optimal to always try leveling lower level heroes that have a cheaper Zeni cost.

But how do you get Hero Memories, you might be wondering? Well let me tell you.
How to get Hero Memories (SAVE YOUR ZENI!)
There are three main ways of gaining Hero Memories.

The first is the most free to play friendly, and the most consistent. Just play a Standard Battle with the hero you want to gain Memories for! There's an rng flip at the end of every match that will either give you memories for the hero you're playing, or another random other hero you own. (seems to be roughly 50/50)

However, to incentivize daily play over hardcore grinding the devs have a soft daily limit on the amount of Hero Memories you can get in a day. You might've noticed that when you first start playing every day you can get ~60+ Memories per match, but as the matches go on it'll slowly drop to ~40, then ~30, then all the way down to ~1-6 per match. This means as a F2P you have to kind of just have the patience to play a bit daily instead of nonstop grinding if you want to unlock more and more heroes.

The second and third way to get Memories, are honestly both scams that all F2P and low spenders should avoid at risk of completely halting their Star Collection progress imo. The shop can sell you 50 memories for 80-100 Zeni, and picking up a dupe character you already own from the Star Collection (like Goku Daima, or a character you've already bought with Gems) will give you 5,000 memories for that character.

Both of these sound good on paper, but the issue is that Zeni in this game is INCREDIBLY LIMITED. You can only gain it in very few ways and not in huge chunks. The biggest source of Zeni is through the Battle Pass, and it only gives you so much Zeni per pass. So wasting Zeni on anything other than the cheapest hero upgrades you have available is going to quickly leave you Zeni starved and unable to level up your Star Collection anymore - aka unable to get anymore free characters. This is what happened to many players in the Beta.
TL;DR / Optimal way to Unlock Heroes
TL;DR - Don't waste your Zeni on anything other than your cheapest available hero upgrades.

Optimal Unlocking:
  • Play as low level heroes in Standard Battle to have a chance to get Memories for them.
  • Only use Zeni on upgrading the lowest level heroes you own.
  • Only pick up heroes you don't already own from the Star Collection to have more low level targets.

If there's more consistent ways to grind Zeni in the future, this guide will be pretty useless - but for now I figure it's an important note to warn people not to waste their Zeni since many people bricked their accounts in the Beta by wasting Zeni on shop purchases and expensive hero upgrades.

Worst case though like, now you can at least just swipe I guess xd.

enjoy game, take it slow if you don't wanna swipe on Heroes, and remember that even if you're out of Zeni now it just means you have to wait for the next Battle Pass to gain a ton more! :) It's not a big deal if you're already out of Zeni tbh, just remember to be smart about how you use it later. Also you could get lucky and get some Zeni out of the daily free shop thing so y'kno - maybe you get enough to keep leveling that way!

good luck have fun, don't judge me for swiping i really wanted to play Hit :3 (and you only get 2/3 of that hero tier through the Star Collection so I was gonna swipe if I wanted every hero regardless)
Bonus Section: All the ways to get Zeni (Seasonal Resets!)

How do you get a higher battle score?

Just adding that for some reason the 3k memory shards seems to be unique to Goku (mini). I'm only at like star lvl 21 but the rewards for heros arent showing me the 3k for any other hero yet. It might be intentional since Goku (mini) was a registration reward and everyone got them. Not sure, but honestly hoping they ease up on that memory shard cap. Even if i was only getting 10 shards per game would be better than seein 1-6 and ONLY one batch of them after games.

It's both nice and kind of annoying that playing the characters you play less (usually for a reason) make it easier to level up your star rank. Guess it's a smart incentive to get people to play a wider range.

Leveling up heroes takes a lot more Zeni the higher you level them. (300 -> 600 -> 1000 -> 2000 etc+). It's a lot easier to get 50 memories a day by just playing a round or two compared to getting 100 Zeni. The Zeni from the shop is RNG and not guaranteed, so it can help but it's not reliable.

Basically just depends on your priorities tbh. If you don't intend to play a few matches a day, then you can save some time by buying Memories in the shop at the cost of Zeni efficiency. If you want to get as many characters as possible as a F2P, then you should only use your Zeni on your lowest level hero upgrades.

I’ve been playing all weekend, and I still couldn’t spend all my Zeni — I’m currently sitting on 8k as I type this, with nowhere to spend it. To be fair, I think the daily purchases for hero memories are absolutely necessary for a Free-to-Play player to progress. The game gives you the Zeni daily for those purchases. As you mentioned, the game reduces the amount you get as you complete more matches per day, so it strikes me as the intended way to maximize the “shards” for hero upgrades.
