Intro
We will use the GloriousEggroll version of the Proton library to properly set up the container for the game.
Short guide
  1. Uninstall the game.
  2. Install GE-Proton8-32.
  3. Select GE-Proton as the compatibility tool and launch the game once.
It will install a few Windows libraries, but the game won’t start. That's OK.
  4. Select Proton Experimental and run the game again.
Now it works fine.
Long guide
Phase A. Uninstall the game

We need a fresh starting point.

Phase B. Install GE-Proton

1. Switch to Desktop Mode.
2. Download the archive https://github.com/GloriousEggroll/proton-ge-custom/releases/tag/GE-Proton8-32.
3. Extract it to ~/.steam/steam/compatibilitytools.d.

Tip: Use Dolphin File Manager.
  • Top right corner → hamburger menu → Show hidden files.
  • In the left Places panel → Home.
  • Find and open the .steam folder → open steam folder inside → go to the compatibilitytools.d.
If the folder doesn’t exist, create it manually.

Here I opened the archive and just dragged and dropped the entire GE-Proton folder from Ark to the destination directory.

Phase C. Setup

Switch back to Gaming Mode using the desktop shortcut.

1. Open the BIT.TRIP Runner page → Cog icon → Properties.
2. Go to Compatibility tab → check Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool.
3. Select GE-Proton8-32 from the dropdown list.

Exit Properties and press Play.
Some Windows libraries will be installed, then the game will crash. That’s expected.

Phase D. Final step

1. Go back to Properties of BIT.TRIP Runner.
2. On the Compatibility tab, select Proton Experimental.

Exit Properties and press Play.
Now the game works fine. 🎉

Congratulations!
