HUD Explanation
  1. Equipped Weapon: Your equipped weapon[techraptor.net], its Grade, its level, and its experience are all shown on the hexagon at the top-left of the screen.
  2. Buffs and Debuffs: Any active buffs or debuffs are shown below the Lymbic Energy bar.
  3. Lymbic Energy: The white bar at the bottom of the top-left HUD section shows your "Lymbic Energy," which is essentially your mana for using powers from Glyphs[techraptor.net] attached to your weapons.
  4. Stamina: Your Stamina is used to execute attacks, dodge, and run during combat. (Running does not drain Stamina outside of combat.) Your maximum Stamina is capped by your current Endurance.
  5. Endurance: Endurance is your health bar. If this reaches 0, you die.
  6. Enemy Tier and Endurance: Enemies you've recently damaged or are currently targeting will show their Tier (marked by a roman numeral) and their current Endurance (health).
  7. Targeting Indicator: Your currently-targeted enemy will be indicated by a light green diamond with an X through it.
  8. Inventory Message: Any items added to or removed from your inventory will be indicated on the left side of the screen.
  9. Glyph and Relic Abilities: The three circles on the top, left, and bottom of this array show the abilities provided by any Glyphs attached to your current weapon. The hexagon on the slot to the right shows the ability provided by your equipped Active Relic[techraptor.net].
  10. Usable Items: Any usable items equipped in your Loadout are shown here. The current usable item is in the center, and the next items are on the left and right; you can rotate through them by pressing the appropriate button depending on your platform.
  11. Interact Indicator: Any interactable objects (such as items to pick up, levers, keypads, etc.)
  12. Drone Abilities: Any abilities provided by equipped Drone Modules are shown here on the bottom right of the screen. You can activate them by holding the toggle key indicated in the center of this array (which is right-click by default on PC).
It should be noted that the Hell is Us HUD is dynamic by default; it shows and hides elements depending on whether they're needed. You can change this behavior in the options.

Now that I've explained the HUD, it's time to get to the meat of our Hell is Us Starter Guide. This Starter Guide will teach you the basics of the game and walk you through your first few steps in the starting zone, Senedra Forest.
The Gold Medallion and Ernest Caddell
Walk down the hill until you see a tree with a curved arm. Turn around and face Southwest and you'll see something glowing. Walk up to it and you'll find a Gold Medallion and a tablet in a language you can't understand.
Items in Hell is Us are indicated by glowing orbs near them. Consumable items are marked in red, and more important items are marked in white, yellow, or green. The Gold Medallion, in particular, is a Research Item[techraptor.net] that comes into play a few hours later in the game.

Head northeast along the road and keep following it. A short distance ahead, you'll find a farmhouse. You'll also see a spinning green manual save point on the ground; interact with it to save your game.

Go into the basement of the farmhouse and you'll find a man named Ernest Caddell. Speak with him and you can get the key to open the gate on his farm.
The Farm Gate and the Scorched Bell
Now is a good time to learn how to use the compass. It's equipped in your Loadout's Usable Items wheel by default; press the appropriate key (Q on PC) to activate it. You're going to want to head northwest from your current position; that will lead you to the farm's gate.
Head northwest past the cow and you'll see the farm gate glowing. Unlock the gate and head past the first set of windchimes. You'll run into some stacked wooden pallets.

Bring up your compass and face 285 on the compass (between west and northwest) and you'll see some stone ruins just past some barrels. Head into the ruins and look for a chest with a white glowing orb on it; this is another Research Item[techraptor.net] called the Scorched Bell. As before, we're just collecting this for later.
Finding the APC
From here, head roughly east and you'll find your way back to the road. Keep heading east, listening for the sound of windchimes.

A short distance later, you'll have to turn north at this intersection:
Turn north at this intersection. Follow the windchimes deeper in the forest and you'll pass an abandoned tractor. Keep going until you reach the APC; you'll find a wounded soldier next to it.

Talk with the wounded soldier and he'll tell you how to find the APC key — it's on his sergeant who is trapped within the ruins next to the APC. First, you'll have to find a medkit so the soldier can heal himself.
Retrieving the Medkit
Head northwest of the APC until you reach a bunch of logs blocking a path, then turn left and head up the mountain path to the southwest. The path is indicated by white X marks along the way, and it's fairly straightforward for the most part.

A short distance up the path, you'll see a collection of blue stones on the high ground to the right.
This leads to a treasure, and we'll get it along the way.

A short distance ahead, you'll see a pile of tires next to a tree marked with an X.
Take the left path and you'll find a yellow stone with a taunting note written by a child — this starts the "Caddell Family Treasure" Mystery[techraptor.net]. Mysteries are side quests of a sort that typically lead to some kind of treasure, and we're about to solve your first one.

Get back onto the main path and continue following the Xs; it's a fairly straightforward path. You'll encounter the OMSIF Camp a short distance later. You'll find three items in the OMSIF Camp.

The first is the OMSIF Medkit. This is an Investigation Item[techraptor.net]; these are things like keys or other useful items that are used in the main story quest. Next is the "Vial of Strange Substance," which is yet another Research Item[techraptor.net].

You'll also find the "OMSIF Report - Field Research." This is a Miscellaneous Item; items of this category are typically lore or other interesting tidbits that aren't actually functional or helpful in your quest.
The Vault of Forbidden Knowledge
If you investigate the immediate area further, you can find a door in a cave behind the tent that is locked by a combination lock. This is a Vault of Forbidden Knowledge[techraptor.net], a secret area that you can learn about once you unlock the research system and find a bunch of Research Items.

Fortunately, the codes for these vaults are fixed — here's the code for this particular Vault.
Unlock the Vault and you'll find a bunch of items you can't really use yet, including quite a few Glyphs[techraptor.net]. Glyphs are used to enhance your weapons with special abilities once you rescue the blacksmith in the next Location on the map[techraptor.net].
Finding the Caddell Family Treasure
While we're up here, we may as well get the Caddell Family Treasure. We already found the yellow stones which gave us the note to start the Mystery; now, let's find the last two items.

Head west from the OMSIF camp until you see a pile of barrels. You'll see a road in the distance going up.
Head up this road. Follow it and you'll see a pile of rocks painted red. Interact with the rocks and you'll get the Exploration Item[techraptor.net] "Key - Rusted."

Exploration Items are like Investigation Items; they're typically keys, notes, and the like that are used to unlock things or progress the story. However, they are usually less important than Investigation Items and may only be used for side quests such as Mysteries and Good Deeds, as in this case.

Go back down the way you came and return to the OMSIF camp. Stand next to the light with a generator in front, and face northeast; you'll see a gap in the trees in the distance.
Walk straight ahead down this path.

Just past the trees, you'll hit a cliff wall. Turn to your right and you'll see two paths.
Take the left-hand path and follow it up. A short distance ahead, you'll find some blue stones. Use the Key - Rusted you got from the red stone to open the lockbox and you'll get the Bracelet of Ecstasy - Wanton Destruction, your first piece of Defensive Gear[techraptor.net].

Open up your Katoche Tablet, select the Loadout tab, and equip the Bracelet of Ecstasy - Wanton Destruction on your Defensive Gear. This will give you additional Endurance (health) and some other abilities.
Returning with the First Aid Kit
You now have all of the important stuff in the hills. Make your way back down to the wounded OMSIF soldier. Use the trade option with him and give him the Medkit; he'll thank you for the help and give you the Investigation Item "Ancient Mechanism."

Climb up the nearby ladders and you'll see a broken tablet with a pickaxe symbol on it. Head around the corner and you'll see what looks like a glowing tombstone. Interact with it, insert the Ancient Mechanism, and three pillars will rise up out of the ground.
