I destroy every car I see for this reason. Always stay away from portals. Blow everything up before it blows you up.

Next time just blow everything up I guess? I don't think the dude had a chance to wait this one out, the last enemy for him was the Car Thrower, and the car they throw doesn't become an object until you Kill them by that time the portal was already opening and he would have had to have been holding A and S at the same time to even start moving away from it.
