Beating ALL Bosses Lethally/Non-Lethally (EZCheese)
By Baan Dar
This Guide is for the Ultimate EZCheese against The Cobra Unit Fights (Lethal/Non-Lethal)

This short per Boss Fight Guide will hopefully help and teach some players new and returning a useful way to deal with The Cobra Units effortlessly Lethally AND NON-Lethally.

This is my First Guide so it will be terrible but I do hope it does help other players or even help me refine and make better guides in the future. Thank you for checking it out. Let me know if there are things I left out and that could be better conveyed in the guide.

Items TO Get
This will just be a list of items that will be obtained throughout your story to help your EZCheese. I'll do my best to arrange the list from earliest to end game. You can always find these items anywhere when you play but I know these are the "most readily available" spots when you are "Commencing Operation Snake Eater" (Not the Virtuous Mission)

1. Chaff Grenade
Dremuchji South. After The Boss destroys your Aircraft you used to fly back into Russia with. Instead of going to the guards who run up to you. Go the opposite way (South) and you'll end up at the beginning where the Virtuous Mission took place. Where you started the Virtuous Mission, Go left over a log and it'll be in a small side area.

2. Smoke Grenade
Dolinovodno. It's under the bridge in the little cave side. It's next to the XM16E1 Pick up in the Virtuous Mission.

3. MK.22
Rassvet. EVA Gifts it to you. If you are doing a Non-Lethal Run. This is your primary go-to until you get the Mosin Nagant to Cheese extra Stamina Damage,

4. Thermal Goggles
Rassvet. In the Locker, of the room where you met Sokolov and where EVA gave you the MK.22

5. SVD
Ponizvje West. If you hug the left side of the walls going past all the Flying Hovercraft Soldiers, you'll stumble upon the path to here. It will be guarded by three guards. It's behind a yellow metal door.

6. Mosin Nagant
Sokrovenno South. From DEFEATING The End Non-Lethally.

7. RPG-7
Krasnogorje Mountainside. Before you leave the zone, the three buildings you see. It'll be the first building on the right.

OPTIONAL

OP1. AK-47
Rassvet. Up the only Stairs in the area. Behind a pushable oil barrel.

OP2. M37
Chyornaya Peschera Cave. You go to your right when you first enter the zone and it'll be in the room.

OP3. XM16E1
Graniny Groki Ext: Inside Walls. Right of the enterance to the Graniny Gorki Lab Interior. In a small supply building.
Tactical Reloading
This is mainly for new players as the OG Veterans know of this but THANKS to Ћ Rob for wanting this to be included for general game-play help.

There are two different control settings for MGS Delta.
Ћ Rob Was kind enough to make instructions that are fairly simple to follow so I will include them.

Tac-Reloading
is the act of Un-equipping your current weapon slot and re-equipping it to reload and have weapons that require manual cycling to be ready to use with any delay in your fire rate.

New Style: Hold Aim, then Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> repeat
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Legacy Style: Hold First Person View, then Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> repeat

Credited: Ћ Rob
Ocelot
Ocelot acts and starts off as the tutorial boss template. You get a feel for what might take place or happen in a boss fight with The Cobra Unit.

  • Usually sectioned off in one part of the zones of the map* for when the fight begins.
  • You will see secondary LIFE and Stamina of said Boss you are currently fighting.
  • Beat them LETHALLY or NON-LETHALLY.
(If you are a returning player you may have noticed you can't easily cheese as before due to the invincibility feature they added to the Boss's Health System; Example: Can't Flashbang The Fear and use a lethal weapon to do Non-Lethal Damage)
**Additional Context** With the exception of The Sorrow and The Boss. Each Cobra Member AND Volgin have 2 PHASES.

OCELOT
"That's it. THAT'S THE STANCE!"

Fighting The Ocelot Commander, Major Ocelot can be a simple one. Once you know that each time he reloads his revolvers that he moves, shoots and reloads faster and with each reload he adds 2 ricochet bullets. (Beating him with Lethal doesn't count as a kill BUT you do have to use the MK.22 if you want the Animal Camo)

At the beginning you'll be placed face to face with Ocelot separated by the crevice. I recommend going to the rock that's directly to your left shoulder. You can fight Ocelot from there the whole fight.

Lethal - At this point if you are a collector. You should have plenty of LETHAL options to use.
If not, the 1911 is fine as well. (Take off your Suppressor!)
Avoid Ocelot shots and try to do damage to him anytime you can before he reloads.
(Personally, I haven't done a lethal run in such a long time so I don't know exactly which LETHAL method does the most damage)

Non-Lethal - You only have access to the MK.22 Tranq Pistol AND it has to be racked each time you shoot. I recommend doing the same for the LETHAL part of this section. Hug the rock and aim for HEAD shots. Each Tranq shot does an eighth of Stamina. (8 Headshots TOTAL)

(Optional Tips: You can use a variety of environment triggers to distract Ocelot. You can shoot the Markhor, shoot the Bee Hive on the Tree behind Ocelot, shoot his beret off)

*Side-Note* The End Boss Fight is the Exception.
The Pain
Just a little personal anecdote here... ♥♥♥♥ this Cobra Unit Member. He IS a real Pain. I speedrun this game and the OG because how fast you CAN beat an MGS game. 90% of the time my runs pushed back because of his inconsistent Hornetshielding armor timing and how the new invincibility timing works for Bosses.

You truly are.

Mr. Bee Boy here is your first taste of the emotionally charged combat team named Cobra Unit. Let me tell you what he can do and how we can EZCheese this Barry B. Benson.

  • He can make HornetArmor or Shielding or whatever.
  • He throws a pheromone to attract Hornets to that location
  • He can throw AND spawn grenades for bees to carry to you.
  • He can magically make a Thompson appear from bees making the outline.
  • He can spawn 3 "Bullet Bees" (2nd Phase)
  • Albeit rarely, He can summon a Hornet Clone of himself.
  • He can make you wear a hornet suit.
  • He puts a screen of hornets in front of you to block your vision.

OKAY... Let's Cheese.
Mr. Yellow and Black Stripe Vest can easily be countered by... SMOKE GRENADES. YUP. Bees/Hornets definitely ask for non-smoking areas. The only caveat is you have a limited number of them (Unless you got the Digital Deluxe and have the Grenade Camo Outfit) That is the main counter. Once you throw a smoke grenade in his area. ALL Hornets around him vanish... But let's run more options for different situations.

HornetArmor:
Smoke Grenades - Instantly Gone
Frag/WP Grenades - Two will completely remove the Hornets
(You can find Frag Boxes in front of the starting platform you are on)
M37 - Takes a couple of shots but can remove the Hornets as well. *Tac-Reload*

Pheromone Vials:
The Pain throws 5 vials at your locations and they have a decent spread about. It's not hard to dodge but if you do dodge them, he throws another set at you. There's no real way to counter this other than hitting him with a stun locking animation such as a Headshot or Grenade blast. Going under water is the only real counter to this.
(BTW this mechanic for some reason is jank. You can get hit and go under the water to remove the effect but the hornets will still follow you sometimes, sometimes the vials don't break on you but near you and hornets will travel to you)

The Magical BeeGun:
You just have to hide in the water behind one of the two platforms in the cave. Going under water his bullets still hit you unless you are at the very bottom.

BeeCloneJitsu:
Any Grenade or the M37 Shotgun *Tac-Reload*

The Pain Throwing Grenades:
Jump into the water if it lands on the platform you are on and vice versa.
The Pain Spawning Grenades:
I recommend using something that can shoot semi fast. Takes three shots to destroy carrier shell.

The Bullet Bees:
Just dive and stay under the water till the coast is clear.

Time for Action:

LETHAL: I recommend using Grenades to clear up his Hornets and then unload everything until the invincibility kicks in. You can get a resupply of your most recent ammo type you use by transversing between platforms. You can get more Grenades BUT they will only be FRAG grenades and they spawn underwater in front of the platform you start the battle on.

Non-LETHAL: MK.22 and lots of patience. You can resupply ammo from the two platforms by rotating often. I ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMEND YOU STAY ON A PLATFORM until you are forced off it. Reason being is that it's easier to avoid grenades, vials and the thompson by simply jumping to a corresponding area around the platform them using the water to save you in the first place.

(If you have access to the Grenade Camo this makes it easier to remove the HornetArmor as you don't have to constantly resupply)

*Side Note* I don't recommend using BugJuice or the Hornet Stripes Outfit as the Hornets just bypass the mechanic. You get hit with a vial, Hornets are still going to attack you. The Hornet Stripes Outfit doesn't work for the Hornets.

**Side note** There are two more things he does to the player which don't really damage the player but more or less hinder mobility or sight picture but both hard counters are literally going into the water and going under.
The Fear
Spidey Boy here is a fairly simple Cobra to kill if you are doing it Lethally but an entirely different story if you are doing it Non-Lethally. LIKE stupidly different.

Like for The Pain. I'm going to list what he can do and how to EZCheese them.

  • He can go Invisible
  • He can jump from tree branch to tree branch.
  • He shoots multiple crossbow bolts at you.
  • He yells "The Fear" EVERY TIME HE GETS SHOT.
  • He shoots the traps you are near to trigger them to damage you

Alrighty, How can we EZCheese this Stealth Camo using Loser?

Invisibility:
Above 50% Stamina, He will always be cloaked but he makes noise every time he moves. He loses Stamina every time he moves with the Camo on. Hard Counter is Draining the Stamina and Thermal Goggles.

Crossbow Bolts:
He shoots 2 different bolts; One is the Regular Bolt, The other is a grenade tied to a Bolt.
The Regular Bolts have three different attack; Single Bolt, Barrage Bolts and Volley Bolts. Just hide behind trees for the first two attacks but for the Volley, you just have to keep running BUT avoid hidden traps!
The Grenade Bolt: He shoots an arrow at your feet that releases a live grenade. Just roll away and you should be far enough.

Moving Around:
So there are two different movements types for The Fear after his Phase 2.
Lethal -As you do more Lethal damage to The Fear. He moves around faster and his attack patterns are more aggressive compared to Non-Lethal. As he will use more Grenade Bolts and Barrage/Volley after reaching his intended tree branch.

Non-Lethal - As you do more Non-Lethal damage to The Fear. He starts to be more concern with looking for food and moving slower. He stops focusing on the player to search for nearby food meaning he will not attack you BUT if not prepared to act quickly will just result in wasted time and ammo as he eats to regain Stamina.

Traps:
There are really two different trap kinds but three if you wanna be technical about it.
  • Rope-Break:
Tried to trees or a wall and a tree. Is a single shin high piece of stretched rope that when broken either sets off a claymore or some kind of tribal ass buffoonery. Just avoid them*
  • Pressure:
Rope Snares and Quicksand. I just recommend only really moving if you need to.
  • The Fear Shooting Traps near You:
If The Fear sees you move towards any Rope-Breaking trap he will prioritize trying to shoot it. I recommend avoiding them unless you plan to use them against him**

Time for Action

The Fear's jumping pattern is set UNTIL one of the two thresholds are met:
He will always Jump Four Times and land at a tree branch to attack.

Lethal: I recommend using Thermal Goggles to find The Fear anytime you are unsure where he is. Any Lethal damage you can accurately hit him with. Done. He does move faster and attack faster but resets his animation anytime he takes damage.

Non-Lethal: I recommend you just only use the MK.22, have some ammo for it and the Thermal Goggles if needed. I also HIGHLY recommend you not move from the spot you are as you can see The Fear from any tree branch he goes to BUT one. If you run low on ammo, there's a box to the right where The Fear Starts from.
Once you get him to 50% Stamina. He will Jump TWICE and attempt to shoot something to eat. You can exploit this as he moves slower and you can interrupt the animation to make him reset and Jump TWICE Again. Simply, Repeat until Stamina is gone.

Editor Note: funneypurpledogthing Does point out you can use Rotten Food or Poison Animals (Dart Frog/Cobalt Spider) can help with the fight making it easier. Much appreciate the added input!

Credited: funneypurpledogthing

*Side-Note* I HIGHLY recommend for either Damage Type to stay put and not move, only when The Fear shoots his Grenade Bolt at you.

**Side-Note** If you plan accordingly you can have The Fear get hurt by his own traps when on the ground or get him into an animation where he doesn't focus you so you can get a quick breather.
The End
"The Future is now Old Man"

This can be either a fast, tracking fight or it can take the wind out your sails and leave you looking for an old man covered in moss who's going to find you first.
He may be old but this old man is A FREAK OF NATURE. Let me explain.

  • He can regenerate his Stamina in a Ray of Sunlight.
  • He is abnormally fast for a dude who is over 100 years old.
  • He can snipe you and make not only Snake jump in the air but you too from the sheer ambush factor.
  • He has Birb. Birb relays everything to him. Birb must die.
  • He can Stalk you if you make to much noise or don't move or stay in first person to long.*

He can we EZCheese Old Man Rivers and his Gov't Spying Device?

Equip the Directional Mic and use Thermal Goggles. Because of the use of Technology and Science (Yeah, Science *****) we can reverse spy on the Old Man breathing hard and saying "This is the End." to find him easily. The Directional Mic can pick up noises through the terrain, you can easily hear The End shuffle about and talk or even hear his Parrot chirp. Find the best route to be not seen by The End or his Birb and BAM. Classic Cat and Mouse.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND DOING THIS NON-LETHALLY
So you can get access to the Mosin Nagant.

Time For Action

Lethal: If you are fighting The End in Sokrovenno. I feel like you are going to have a bad time. You missed out on the SVD unless you picked it up and didn't kill him when The Fear was wheeling him in outside the Warehouse. That would be the best time to kill him since it'll be a one hit kill. But the EZCheese Items I mention can help defeat him in no time.

Non-Lethal: I recommend the Thermal Goggles and maybe the occasional use of the Directional Mic. I HIGHLY recommend sneaking up on The End for better results unless you are confident to hit him with the MK.22 from afar. (Definitely Hold him up so you can get the Moss Camo Outfit)

*Side-Note* If you are having difficulties finding The End you can Cheese him into your area and try to track him down by using one of the three methods I mention. I recommend CQCing the air 5-7 times and running out into the open then running back to cover. The End should be in an area close to you or it'll change prospective to The End's sniper scope and show you a rough direction he can see you from.

If you did this Non-Lethally and got the Mosin Nagant. The rest of the game is now even easier for Non-Lethal takedowns.
The Fury
The Fury. JetPackBoi. Massive Flamer.

This fight with The Fury can be really annoying the less Health or Stamina he has. He acts irrational and tends to constantly use his Flamethrower more often leading to hard fights for either Damage Type.

  • He can use his Flamethrower from a good distance and it spreads further the lower his Health/Stamina gets.
  • He can Fly.

How can we EZCheese this Cosmonaut?

Flamethrower:
Yeah, you just have to avoid it. There ain't no hard counter other than trying to stun lock him.

Jetpack:
Again you would have to stun lock him to stop him from flying away.

Time for Action

Honest to The Boss herself. You literally cheese this man by running to the Red Door at the top of the map and use the invisible barrier that kind of deflects the flames from his weapon. Could also use the Oil Barrels to your advantage if you are doing a Lethal run.

Lethal: I recommend going to the Red Door and pressing against the wall or going prone after you do any Lethal Damage. He will simply ignore you or try to fire his flames at you which will just stop because of the barrier.

Non-Lethal: I HIGHLY recommend (If you acquired it) The Mosin Nagant and you head to the Red Door. This is the only fight where Non-Lethal Headshots don't do anything because he's wearing a glass helmet. The Mosin can end the fight in 12 shots to his body. If not the MK.22 can do it around 20 shots or so.

There's not alot to this fight and after finding out about the Red Door area years ago. Facing The Fury has been pretty easy experience since learning that Cheese.
The Sorrow

Past Lover of The Joy. A man who gave everything for the woman he loved.

The fastest EZCheese for this Cobra Unit Member is to just go under the water and drown yourself to complete the section faster then take the Revival Pill to come back to the other side to *BEAT* The Sorrow.

Informed by CamperN0ob; You can do it as intended to receive The Spirit Camo by going through the entire sequence and "dying" at the end. Or you can drown yourself or grenade yourself to finish The Sorrow Boss fight Faster
Volgin
"Judo, Huh?"

Mr.Kuwabara, Kuwabara
He can be difficult at first to face but once you recognize his attack patterns and learn how to counter them. You will be more electrifying than the most electrifying man in Groznyj Grad.

How can we EZCheese the man who has everything to lose?

Well let's see how we can fight against his attacks

  • He has a passive Electric Shield that stops projectiles from the front.
  • He can shoot balls of Lightening from his hand.
  • He can shoot bullets from the palm of his hand.
  • He can run electricity all over his body.
  • He can summon a floor based electric trap that moves and rotates.
  • He can summon an electric static field that hold bullets and then he discharges the field to fire the bullets

This fight is timed against you. Only 5 minutes to defeat Volgin. So let's counter his attack with our own.

Balls of Chain Lightening:
Just go prone with no weapon in hand.

Palm Shooting:
Start on one side of the area and run to the other side to avoid being hit.

Livewire Body:
Don't touch or run into Volgin.

Floor Trap:
Run and Roll over it. Once it rotates do the same thing again.

Static Field of Bullets:
Go prone and you'll be fine.

I HIGHLY recommend you do this fight Non-Lethally. As it'll be the fastest way to end the fight.

Lethal: You can not attack Volgin straight up unless you have Chaff Grenades and are quick enough to get pop shots off after the Chaff grenades pops. Almost all LETHAL damage will be from the backside as his Electric Shield blocks projectiles from the front.

Non-Lethal: As long as you don't try to initiate CQC with a fully electric Volgin or while he's trying to do one of his moves. You can CQC throw him or even counter his punches to inflict Stamina damage and when he's on the ground, roll over him to do maximum Stamina Damage.

*Ћ Rob Mentions you can use the Mosin Nagant to do some Stamina Damage to Volgin after CQC knocking him down. Shooting him in the upper back as he gets back up. Ћ Rob also mentions to use Tac-Reloads to get more shots off*

**CamperN0ob As points out you can use the Raikov Mask to temporarily get Volgin to stop fighting you. They also state if you use the Patriot (New Game+ Only) you can defeat Volgin faster. They also mentioned you can use 5 TNT after his invulnerability is gone.

*2nd Phase*
Just do the same thing as you did before Volgin acts all dramatic during the cutscene. Just be careful as Volgin adds the Two Last Attacks from the bullet points in this Phase.
Shagohod // Volgin
"They strap a rocket to a tank. Tanks don't need Rockets. Tanks... NEEDS... LEGS."

This actually should be labeled
Volginhod?
or
Volgohod?
Shagogin?

You can only do this "Lethally". You shoot the Trax of the Shagohod and when being exposed to the backside of it. Launch your RPG7 at the cracked backside.

Because the 2nd Phase of the Shagohod involves Volgin. I'm going to just include it here and not as it's own section.

At this point, anything the Shagohod was doing before. It will do again just with Volgin being on top of it now. So I'm going to jump into the EZCheese part for either Damage Type.

Lethal: Use the RPG7 on the Trax once again. Depending on the side you hit. Volgin's passive Electric Shield will be down on that side that got damaged. Now use ANYTHING (Recommend SVD) that deals Lethal and shoot his Head or his Body. Rinse and Repeat. EVA will drop ammo for you when you get low.

Non-Lethal: Do the same thing mentioned in the Lethal. Use the RPG7 on the Trax once again. Depending on the side you hit. Volgin's passive Electric Shield will be down on that side that got damaged. Use the Mosin Nagant to Headshot Volgin to do almost a full bar of Stamina Damage to him. Repeat. EVA will drop ammo for you when you get low.

**Fun Fact** If you are fast enough you can complete this entire fight without Volgin firing a single shot at you during both phases and keep it locked down in one spot if you can hit the trax's at certain time splits.
The Joy.

"All that’s left for you to take is my life, by your own hand. One must die and one must live."

This is it. Can you take on your mentor? Can you achieve and uphold the title of... Big Boss?

This Fight is and I regret to say, extremely easy to Cheese. Despite The Boss being the Mother of Special Forces, she is probably one of the easiest Cobra Unit Member to beat (Other than The Sorrow being dead-brain easy if you played before)

Lethal: As soon as you start the fight. Simply shoot ANY gun at The Boss and immediately roll backwards to the log. Once at the log, hide behind it and equip the SVD and watch The Boss hug the tree trunks and try to find you. When she tries to pop her head out to find you. Simply pop her head with the SVD and sit there. She can't hit you with her Patriot. Repeat until your mentor is dead.

Non-Lethal: HIGHLY RECOMMEND As soon as you start the fight. Simply shoot ANY gun at The Boss and immediately roll backwards to the log. Once at the log, hide behind it and equip the Mosin Nagant and watch The Boss hug the tree trunks and try to find you. When she tries to pop her head out to find you. Simply pop her head with the Mosin Nagant and sit there. She can't hit you with her Patriot. Repeat.

"Jack... Or should I say... Snake... You're a wonderful man. Kill me. Kill me now. Do it. There's only one room for one Boss and one Snake."
Operation Snake Eater

Thank you @CamperN0ob for more insight. I have added your info to the prospective areas!
CamperN0ob 11 Sep @ 6:10am
Also, skipping the sorrow by just drowning yourself skips the camo too, so it can be called "lethal" vs doing it as intended - "non lethal"
CamperN0ob 11 Sep @ 6:06am
Equipping raikov mask in first part of volgin fight makes him "drop to knees" and do nothing. For lethal can just drop 5 tnt near him and detonate as soon as his invulnerability drops. Also, doing him lethally doesn't count as a kill for foxhound, since he remains alive for the shagohod part. Same with ocelot - doing him lethally only skips the camo and doesn't count as a kill (so using patriot in ng+ is the fastest way for foxhound)

@Ћ Rob, I do appreciate the info. I will update the guide to include the Tac-Reloads sections accredited to you. Especially with the New Style Layout (As I only play on Legacy).

And I will put the M37 and Mosin Nagant in the sections appropriate for them but with context that they require Tac-Reloads.
Ћ Rob 8 Sep @ 5:11am
I think you should also mention Tactical Reload, which involves quickly un-equipping and re-equipping your weapons with the weapon inv button. This is not a glitch, but an intentional mechanic because there's a codec call mentioning this mechanic.

Not only does it keep your mag ammo topped, you can also fire single shot weapons with low rate of fire even faster. It goes something like this:

New Style: Hold Aim, then Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> repeat

Legacy Style: Hold First Person View, then Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> Weapon Inv -> Weapon Inv -> Fire -> repeat

The M37 (Shotgun) is even more effective on the Pain's Hornet Armor with Tac Reload

In Volgin's fight, after CQC slamming him down, wait until he almost gets back on his feet then shoot his upper back, this is most effective with the Mosin Nagant with Tac Reload because of the faster fire rate
Baan Dar  [author] 7 Sep @ 3:15pm
@funneypurpledogthing I appreciate your input and added to the guide in case other would like to try it.
funneypurpledogthing 3 Sep @ 4:40pm
you can also just poison the fear. when he goes to eat if you chuck out rotten or poisonous food he starts puking and it kinda trivializes the rest of the fight

+++++++REP Great Guide would recommend to anyone who is a TRUE FAN OF MGS3
