STRENGTH IN NUMBERS Showcase - Drop Duchy Combat Phase Guide
By jafferduo
This is the 2nd guide on Combat Phase that discuss with STRENGTH IN NUMBERS scenarios, if you still don't check the 1st guide that contains more basic stuffs, please check it first. The name of the topic is "Drop Duchy - Advanced Tips on Combat Phase & Examples".

[Now the part of this guide starts]
Strength in numbers: Obtain +7/+11/+15 allies when merging groups of the same type during the combat phase.

On Combat Phase, we can also get better results when we benefit by STRENGTH IN NUMBERS.
However, you'll have to take care of the following things here, you'll have to calculate for the best balance between:
1. Army type advantage. And
2. Same type combination bonuses. And
(3. After you take care of both of them, also take care of tiny exchange penalty/advantage I mention in the first guide.)

The situations are far more complicated in this guide.

IMPORTANT NOTES
Strength in numbers: Obtain +7/+11/+15 allies when merging groups of the same type during the combat phase.

I'd made a guide for Combat Phase before, although it doesn't include STRENGTH IN NUMBERS situations; the basic things that avoid tiny exchange penalty and obtain tiny exchange advantage are in that guide, too. If you still haven't check it first, you should check that guide first before you see this guide which is related to STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. The topic is "Drop Duchy - Advanced Tips on Combat Phase & Examples".

Originally, I decide not to make one more guide for the scenarios of Combat Phase with STRENGTH IN NUMBERS included, however, I'd got an interesting situation (I'd put it on example 1), and most importantly, many other things happened after that, it's a long story.

If I find some interesting situations, I may add extra examples here, most of them are below example 20.

If you're not good at calculating, you can enable the following function:
Main Menu Option[Top Right Corner](or Esc, then Option when you're in a run.)
Gameplay.
Enable "Preview Battle Numbers"

If you have any interesting example of Combat Phase, or if you want me to check for improvement on your Combat Phase gameplay on YouTube or elsewhere, you can reply here with screenshot or video links. I'll check them out if I'm still alive on Steam:

Example 1 (+7)
[Same type combination +7]

We have 2 bow squads and 2 ax squads, and we have extra +7 allies bonus when we combine same-type allies.
What's the best result on this situation?

Answer:
!Ally Ax*43 to Ally Ax*10 (+7) = Aax*60!
!Ally Ax*60 to Enemy Bow*12 = Aax*42!
Ally Ax*42 to Ally Bow*46 = Abow*88
Ally Bow*88 to Ally Bow*24 (+7)= Abow*119

Yep, this one needs to send our axes to enemy bows on purpose to get the best result, even though it's on type disadvantage.
To defeat 12 enemy bows without swords here, the two options are either use 12 bows(same type), or use 18 axes(disadvantage type). Although I lose 6 more units, I can switch axes into bows and get another +7 combination bonus, -6+7, actually I get 1 more unit in the end.
If I choose to combine bows first, we'll be unable to switch bows into axes, which will result in 1 less unit at the end.
Example 2 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Warm up first. Calculate everything in your mind correctly, please.

Answer:
Ally Ax*57 to Ally Ax*30 (+11) = Aax*98
Ally Ax*98 to Enemy Sword*66 = Aax*54
Ally Ax*54 to Enemy Sword*67 = Aax*9
Ally Ax*9 to Ally Sword*16 = Asword*25
Ally Sword*25 to Ally Sword*15 (+11) = Asword*51
Ally Sword*51 to Ally Sword*(12*3) (+11*3) = Asword*120
Ally Sword*120 to Enemy Bow*67 = Asword*75
Example 3 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Answer:
Ally Ax*31 to Ally Ax*14 (+11) = Aax*56
Ally Ax*56 to Ally Bow*76 = Abow*132
Ally bow*132 to Ally bow*23 (+11) = Abow*166
!Ally bow*166 to Enemy Ax*(120+120) = Abow*6!
Ally bow*6 to Ally Sword*49 = Asword*55
Ally Sword*55 to Ally Sword*30 (+11) = Asword*96

Enemy has total 240 axes, if our bows reach 160, we can already swipe all 240 axes out with no problem. That's why you should calculate everything clearly, we shouldn't sacrifice the sword combination bonus to raise more bows here.
Example 4 (+7)
[Same type combination +7]

Answer:
Ally Sword*80 to Ally Sword*(60+40) (+7*2) = Asword*194
Ally Sword*194 to Ally Ax*60 = Asword*254
Ally Sword*254 to Enemy Bow*(75*4=300) = Asword*54
Ally Sword*54 to Ally Bow*108 = Abow*162
Ally Bow*162 to Ally Bow*40 (+7) = Abow*209

You don't have to sacrifice the combination bonus from bows to get more swords here.
Example 5 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Act 2 boss battle, most players will gather all allies first, then attack enemies here. However, with same type combine bonus, is it really the best way? (Is there any way to get combination bonus from both swords and bows?)

Answer:
Ally Sword*51 to Ally Sword*40 (+11) = Asword*102
!Ally Sword*102 to Enemy Skeleton*120 = Eskeleton*18!
Enemy Skeleton*18 to Ally bow*58 = Abow*40
Ally Bow*40 to Ally Bow*20 (+11) = Abow*71
71+15-10 = 76 allies left

See? After destroying all of our swords, we can get the combination bonus from bows, so we get the +11 bonus 2 times.
Example 6 (+15)
[Same type combination +15]
(Note: The covered number of the enemy sword is 25, and the covered numbers of our ally's bow are 45 and 48.)

This one is the first time I beat this game on Nightmare Difficulty, the final situation on Act 3 boss battle, for some reasons, I didn't play this Combat Phase to the best.
What's the best way?

Answer:
Enemy sword*25 to Enemy sword*25 = Esword*50
Enemy sword*50 to Enemy Ax*25 = Esword*75
Enemy sword*75 to Enemy Ax*25 = Esword*100
Enemy sword*100 to Ally Ax*70 = Aax*3
Ally Ax*3 to Ally bow*108 = Abow*111
Ally bow*111 to Ally bow*(84+55) (+15*2) = Abow*280
Ally bow*280 to Ally bow*(48+45) (+15*2) = Abow*403
Ally bow*403 to Enemy Skeleton*425 = Eskeleton*22
Enemy Skeleton*22 to Ally sword*163 = Asword*141
Ally Sword*141 to Ally Sword*80 (+15) = Asword*236

You'll have to combine at least three 25-squad enemies into 75, which can be divisible by 3, to cut down the tiny exchange penalty to the lowest here.
Example 6.5 (+15) [Extra]
[Same type combination +15]

Answer:
Ally Ax*6 to Ally Ax*(27+50+21) (+15*3) = Aax*149
!Ally Ax*149 to Enemy Ax*15 = Aax*134!
Ally Ax*134 to Ally Sword*147 = Asword*281
Ally Sword*281 to Ally Sword*(110+30) (+15*2) = Asword*451
Ally Sword*451 to Enemy Bow*20 = Asword*437
Ally Sword*437 to Enemy Skeleton*230 = Asword*207

We need to cut down our axes a little, or it'll be unable to switch to sword to get the combination bonuses from swords.
We get all combination bonuses here, the only main loss is we don't defeat enemy 15 axes on type advantage, we cost 5 more units for them.(-5)
And we suffer a little tiny exchange penalty when we defeat enemy 20 bows with swords.

Start with sword combination first is not ideal here:
Combine enemy 15 axes into enemy 20 bows to make them 35 bows, move 35 enemy bows into ally sword to start the combination, then go enemy 230 skeletons, it will result in 63 swords left, which will make you unable to switch into axes to get combination bonuses from axes.
Example 7 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Please get the most combination bonuses, and try to cut down the tiny exchange penalty to get the best answer.

Answer:
Enemy Bow*22 to Enemy Ax*23 = Eax*45
Enemy Ax*45 to Enemy Bow*23 = Eax*68
Enemy Ax*68 to Ally Bow*51 = Abow*5
Ally Bow*5 to Ally Bow*8 (+11) = Abow*24
Ally Bow*24 to Ally Sword*30 = Asword*54
Ally Sword*54 to Ally Sword*30 (+11) = Asword*95
Ally Sword*95 to Ally Ax*15 = Asword*110
Ally Sword*110 to Enemy Bow*32 = Asword*88
Example 8 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Answer:
Ally Ax*15 to Ally Ax*10 (+11) = Aax*36
Ally Ax*36 to Ally Bow*31 = Aax*67
Ally Ax*67 to Ally Bow*48 = Aax*115
Ally Ax*115 to Enemy Sword*(60+60) = Aax*35
Ally Ax*35 to Ally Sword*40 = Asword*75
Ally Sword*75 to Ally Sword*27 (+11) = Asword*113
Ally Sword*113 to Enemy Bow*(60+48) = Asword*41

You can also choose to get sword-combining and clear enemy bows first; then into axes, axes absorb bows into more axes to clear enemy swords.
Example 9 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Answer:
Ally Ax*15 to Ally Ax*5 (+11) = Aax*31
Ally Ax*31 to Enemy Sword*25 = Aax*14
Ally Ax*14 to Enemy Ax*5 = Aax*9
Ally Ax*9 to Enemy Sword*25 = Esword*11
Enemy Sword*11 to Ally Sword*284 = Asword*273
Ally Sword*273 to Ally Sword*200 (+11) = Asword*484
Ally Sword*484 to Ally Sword*84 (+11) = Asword*579

Step 3 & Step 4 cannot be switched, the enemy axes mustn't go against ally swords.
Example 10 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Should we focus on type advantage, or same type combination bonus?
Well, try to get the best balance between them.

Answer:
Ally Bow*12 to Enemy Ax*44 = Eax*26
Enemy Ax*26 to Enemy Bow*44 = Ebow*70
Enemy Bow*70 to Enemy Ax*43 = Ebow*113
Enemy Bow*113 to Enemy Ax*44 = Ebow*157
Enemy Bow*157 to Ally sword*37 = Ebow*101
Enemy Bow*101 to Ally sword*37 = Ebow*45
Enemy Bow*45 to Ally sword*40 = Asword*10
Ally sword*10 to Ally Ax*45 = Aax*55
Ally Ax*55 to Ally Ax*30 (+11) = Aax*96

The same type combination bonus is +11 here; however, the number of enemy squads are 43~44. So if you don't get type advantage against them, you'll need to cost 43~44 to 1:1 trade enemies, instead of 29~30.
You'll lose 14 more units for each enemy squad, and lose even more if on type disadvantage.
Example 11 (+7)
[Same type combination +7]

Answer:
Ally Ax*8 to Ally Sword*8 = Asword*16
Ally Sword*16 to Enemy Bow*30 = Ebow*6
Enemy Bow*6 to Ally Bow*37 = Abow*31
Ally bow*31 to Ally bow*27 (+7) = Abow*65
Ally bow*65 to Enemy Bow*(30+30) = Abow*5
Ally bow*5 to Ally Ax*28 = Aax*33
Ally Ax*33 to Ally Ax*28 (+7) = Aax*68

The answer path can be different if the same type combination is +11/+15, you may try it out by yourself.
Example 12 (+7)
[Same type combination +7]

Try to get the best result between getting type advantage and same type combination bonus, also take care of tiny exchange advantage/penalty.

Answer:
Ally Sword*50 to Ally Sword*40 (+7) = Asword*97
Ally Sword*97 to Enemy Bow*98 = Asword*31
Ally Sword*31 to Ally Ax*40 = Aax*71
Ally Ax*71 to Enemy Sword*63 = Aax*29
Ally Ax*29 to Enemy Sword*62 = Esword*18
Enemy Sword*18 to Enemy Ax*63 = Eax*81
Enemy Ax*81 to Ally Bow*81 = Abow*27
Ally bow*27 to Ally bow*40 (+7) = Abow*74
74+80 = 154 allies left

Please try to figure out how huge effort I put on these things.
Example 13 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

The numbers of all 4 enemy squad are high, and the types of allies are not good, what should we do?

Answer 1(Fully focused on type advantage):
Enemy Ax*75 to Enemy Bow*75 = Ebow*150
Enemy Bow*150 to Enemy Ax*75 = Ebow*225
Enemy Bow*225 to Enemy Ax*75 = Ebow*300
Enemy Bow*300 to Ally Sword*75 = Ebow*187
Enemy Bow*187 to Ally Sword*35 = Ebow*134
Enemy Bow*134 to Ally Sword*42 = Ebow*71
Enemy Bow*71 to Ally Sword*23 = Ebow*36
(Enemy Bow*36 to Ally Sword*15 = Ebow*13)
(Enemy Bow*13 to Ally Sword*20 = Asword*11)
Ally Sword*11 to Ally Ax*95 = Aax*106
Ally Ax*106 to Ally Ax*23 (+11) = Aax*140

Answer 2(Mixed between type advantage and same type combine bonus):
Ally Ax*95 to Ally Ax*23 (+11) = Aax*129
Ally Ax*129 to Enemy Ax*(75+75) = Eax*21
Enemy Ax*21 to Enemy Bow*75 = Ebow*96
Enemy Bow*96 to Enemy Ax*75 = Ebow*171
Enemy Bow*171 to Ally Sword*75 = Ebow*58
!Enemy Bow*58 to Ally Sword*42 = Asword*3!
Ally Sword*3 to Ally Sword*(35+23) (+11*2) = Asword*83
Ally Sword*83 to Ally Sword*(20+15) (+11*2) = Asword*140

Oh my, two answers are result in the same.
In this situation, the same type combine bonus is only +11, and if you don't kill a 75-squad with type advantage, you'll need to spend 25 more units.
At first, I always thought it's no doubt that it should be solved with full-focused type advantage way, however, the mixed way can actually get the same result here.
That's why you shouldn't always rely on feeling when playing on Combat Phase, you should spend time to calculate the results precisely.
Example 14 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Answer:
Ally Bow*37 to Ally Bow*20 (+11) = Abow*68
!Ally Bow*68 to Enemy Bow*25 = Abow*43!
Ally Bow*43 to Ally Sword*60 = Asword*103
Ally Sword*103 to Ally Sword*60 (+11) = Asword*174
Ally Sword*174 to Ally Ax*15 = Asword*189
Ally Sword*189 to Enemy Bow*25 = Asword*172
Ally Sword*172 to Enemy Bow*25 = Asword*155
Ally Sword*155 to Enemy Bow*25 = Asword*138

The problem is: The number of our swords is high, and our bows is significantly lower than swords. So if you decide to combine swords and defeat all enemy bows directly, you'll be unable to get the combination bonus from bows.
I use one of enemy 25 bow squad to cut down a few of our combined bows, so the rest bows can be switched into 60 swords to get the sword combination bonus and defeat the rest enemy bows.
We spend 25 bows for enemy 25 bows instead of 17 swords for 25(-8), but we get one more same type combination bonus(+11). We also suffer tiny exchange penalty when dealing with the three 25-bow squads each by each, 51 swords for 75 bows instead of 50 for 75(-1).
The +11 bonus still cover over -9, that's it.
You can try to get the 2nd best answer from this scenario, which needs to combine three enemy 25-bow squads into 75 bows first, then draw enemy 75 bows into ally 60 swords. The final result will be 136.
Example 15 (+15)
[Same type combination +15]

Answer:
!Enemy Bow*30 to Ally Bow*33 = Abow*3!
Ally Bow*3 to Ally Bow*(28+40) (+15*2) = Abow*101
Ally Bow*101 to Ally Sword*112 = Asword*213
Ally Sword*213 to Ally Sword*20 (+15) = Asword*248
Ally Sword*248 to Ally Ax*15 = Asword*263
Ally Sword*263 to Enemy Bow*(30*3) = Asword*203
Example 16 (+7)
[Same type combination +7]

Answer:
Ally Ax*15 to Ally Ax*(10+10) (+7*2) = Aax*49
Ally Ax*49 to Enemy Sword*27 = Aax*31
Ally Ax*31 to Enemy Sword*23 = Aax*15
Ally Ax*15 to Ally Bow*29 = Abow*44
Ally Bow*44 to Enemy Ax*35 = Abow*20
Ally Bow*20 to Enemy Ax*35 = Eax*5
Enemy Ax*5 to Ally Sword*50 = Asword*42

We'd got all two +7 combination bonuses from axes in the whole process, and basically we're on type advantage most of time.
The main penalty is at the last step, we need to exchange the last 5 enemy units with 8 ally units. If on type advantage, we just need 3~4 units to defeat 5 enemy units, which means we spend 4~5 more units for this.
There are two tiny exchange penalty when we defeat the 23 enemy sword group and the 35 enemy ax group, on step 3 and 5.
However, other ways will result in higher penalty in different ways, if I don't get it wrong.
Example 17 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Act 1 boss battle, the wall had been outfield by me, the 45 enemy troops are ineffective.
This situation is one of the very nice ingredient for being questioned, to take care of both type advantage and same type combination bonuses, what's the best answer?

Answer:
Ally Ax*15 to Ally Ax*5 (+11) = Aax*31
Ally Ax*31 to Enemy Sword*21 = Aax*17
!!Ally Ax*17 to Enemy Bow*22 = Ebow*10!!
Enemy Bow*10 to Enemy Ax*22 = Eax*32
Enemy Ax*32 to Enemy Bow*22 = Eax*54
Enemy Ax*54 to Ally Bow*38 = Abow*2
Ally Bow*2 to Ally Bow*32 (+11) = Abow*45

I get both two bonuses from combining axes and bows, the only penalty is the step 3 that trade 17 axes for enemy 12 bows(8 trade 12 if on type advantage), I spend 9 more units for it.
However, other parts are perfect, I don't even suffer from any tiny exchange penalty here because the number of enemy squad (21 and 54) can be divisible by 3 when they're eliminated, the 54 enemy axes can't even eliminate the 38-bow group so the combination bonus from ally bows is secured, too.
Example 18 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

This one is really complicated, I spent about 20 minutes to settle the answer of this situation, this is the only situation that costs me very long time to do currently.

Answer:
Enemy Bow*50 to Enemy Bow*26 = Ebow*76
Enemy Bow*76 to Ally Sword*72 = Asword*21
Ally Sword*21 to Ally Sword*30 (+11) = Asword*62
Ally Sword*62 to Enemy Bow*48 = Asword*30
Ally Sword*30 to Ally Bow*72 = Abow*102
Ally Bow*102 to Ally Bow*18 (+11) = Abow*131
Ally Bow*131 to Enemy Ax*38 = Abow*105
105+27+26+31 = 189 allies left

If you think a situation is hard to make decision of, you can try to decide how many same type combination bonuses you should/want to get first.
1 from sword, 1 from bow, and 2 from ax. The maximum combinations bonuses we can get here are 4.
Apparently we can get at least 2 bonuses, and it's impossible to get all 4 bonuses due to the huge squad number will disable type switch.
We know ally bow combination start is also impossible here, because 72+18(+11) = 101, 101 bows go enemy 38 axes will be 75 bows remain, unable to switch to other ally types directly, which will make the situation unable to work good.
Enemies doesn't have any sword, so ax combination start isn't ideal, either.

Now we'd decided to go with ally sword combination start(enemies has plenty of bows so it's really ideal to do this); however, if we combine our swords first then deal with 3 enemy bow groups one by one, we'll receive tiny exchange penalty from enemy 26 and 50 groups because both 26 and 50 can't be divisible by 3.
Instead of dealing the three bow groups one by one, we can rely on our own 72-sword huge number group and do some trick to enemy bow groups.
We can combine the 26 and 50 enemy bow groups to 76 bows first, so we just need to suffer tiny exchange penalty from one (3*25+1); yeah, we don't need to suffer the penalty from both (3*8+2) and (3*16+2).
After the enemy 76 bows go to ally 72 swords, as the ally 72-sword group still has 21 troops remain, we can still get the same type combination later.

At the end of step 4, after we take out all enemy bows, we have 30 swords left. We can go get 1 more combination by go to 72-bow squad, or get 2 more combinations by go to 31-ax squad(but we won't have the type advantage against the enemy 38-ax squad.).
On type advantage, instead of 38:38, we can trade 38 enemy axes with 26 bows(+12); or if we choose to get one more combination bonus but 38:38 trade enemy axes, we get more allies from one more combination bonus(+11).
12 > 11, so go bow combination after step 4 is better.
Intermission
Example 17 and 18 are the initial final-two questions I decided to set in this guide; however, when I set answers for different examples, some accident happened, the answers of two of the examples are updated.
The following two examples are below here.
Example 19 (+7)
[Same type combination +7]

Answer:
Ally Sword*20 to Ally Sword*20 (+7) = Asword*47
Ally Sword*47 to Ally Ax*2 = Asword*49
Ally Sword*49 to Enemy Bow*42 = Asword*21
Ally Sword*21 to Enemy Bow*43 = Ebow*11
!!Enemy Bow*11 to Ally Bow*19 = Abow*8!!
Ally Bow*8 to Ally Bow*18 (+7) = Abow*33
Ally Bow*33 to Enemy Ax*22 = Abow*18

The key is on step 5, there are two options we can do here:
(1) Make enemy 11 bows into ally bow to convert type into bows to get one more same type bonus(+7), or
(2) Make enemy 11 bows into enemy 22 axes to get type advantage(but it'll be unable to get same type combination bonus from ally bows, because none of the number of the rest bow squad exceeds 22).
The same type combination bonus is +7, and make 11 enemy units convert into the type that can be exchanged in advantage cost you 3~4 less unit.
[11:11 on same type, or (7~8):11 in advantage]
7 > (3~4)
So in this situation, get one more combination is better.
(It's also because combining ally bows first isn't ideal here.)
Example 20 (+11)
[Same type combination +11]

Answer:
Enemy Ax*56 to Enemy sword*56 = Esword*112
Enemy sword*112 to Enemy Ax*57 = Esword*169
!Enemy sword*169 to Ally Ax*47 = Esword*98!
Enemy sword*98 to Ally Ax*37 = Esword*42
Enemy sword*42 to Ally Ax*42 = Aax*14
!!Ally Ax*14 to Ally Sword*27 = Asword*41!!
Ally Sword*41 to Ally Sword*(26+26) (+11*2) = Asword*115
Ally Sword*115 to Ally Sword*(15+12) (+11*2) = Asword*164
Ally Sword*164 to Enemy Sword*48 = Asword*116

There are two very important steps here:
(1) After we switch enemy ax type into swords by combine 3 enemy squads into 169 swords at the first 2 steps, we need to ignore the 48-sword enemy squad and go ally ax groups directly instead at step 3.
(2) At the end of step 5, we need to decide what to do next. Should I make 14 ally axes go against 48 enemy swords? Or start combining ally swords directly by moving 14 ally axes into 27 ally swords?

If we make 14 ally axes go against 48 enemy swords, we'll trade 14 axes for 21 swords, the enemy squad will have 27 swords left.
That's very bad, because none of our sword squad exceeds 27, which means at least one of ally sword squad will be eliminated, that means we'll get one less combination bonus(-11).
If we make 14 ally axes go into 27 ally swords, we can get all sword combination bonus, the bad side is we don't get the type advantage by using 14 axes to exchange with 21 enemy swords, we'll have to spend 7 more units to 21:21 trade 21 of enemy swords(-7).
(-7) > (-11); so 14 ally axes go into 27 ally swords is better.

And at the end of step 2, if you choose to combine all 4 enemy squads into 217 swords, you'll result in one of the ally sword squad gets eliminated, like the result that you make 14 ally axes go against 48 enemy swords I mention above. You'll get 112(4 less) units left.
The final knowledge I gained when I make this guide
I'd found brand new answers accidentally on the final two examples.
I just noticed that I still haven't mastered the category of Combat Phase with STRENGTH IN NUMBERS, at that time.
The situation was out of control for a while, I was forced to re-check all answers I made for other examples.
Fortunately, it seems that the answers of other examples have no problem.
However, due to this accident, I can finally master the critical things of this guide, and when I make information for every example, I can explain everything in detail much more.

Thank you for watching.
Example 21 (+7) [Extra]
[Same type combination +7]

Answer:
Enemy Sword*13 to Enemy Sword*14 = Esword*27
