I think your playstyle is correct. This is also the reason why I didn’t share my detailed setup earlier—my configuration may not be the best and might not suit you the most. There’s no defined "beat the game" in this game, so as long as you’re having fun, that’s what matters.
Yes, Polearms are a solid choice. For Adjutants, general level +X will always be the best attribute. At one point, all my Adjutants were equipped with Overload's Longdan (general level +5). This is a physical weapon. Now, with the introduction of new gear, I’ve switched the others to Celestial Artifact (general level +10), which is a magical weapon. However, since my main damage dealer is physical and can’t benefit from its bonuses, I eventually equipped my physical damage Adjutant with Dog Beater—also a polearm. I think your reasoning is spot on.
