Gleba nutrient cell production strategy

Another factory design strategy to simplify factory building on Gleba.

Overview
This guide is another possible solution to solve the challenge of dealing with constantly spoiling materials on the planet Gleba.

Like my previous guide on Gleba with logistics bots modular production strategy, by no means is this the most efficient design but appears to be stable enough for long term use with the added benefit of improved scalability over the previous design idea. This design idea also relies on logistics bots to move things around.

In the other guide, the general idea was to have nutrients flowing from start to finish. The problem with that design is as the perishable materials get closer to the end of the line, they become less fresh which results in things that are made using them also end up being less fresh. If you have a break in either of the two materials coming in for too long, the entire system breaks down and takes a little effort to start it back up again. This is solved by having smaller production "cells" which can auto restart and take care of itself when provided the necessary materials.

Another key change is instead of having nutrients placed on a belt, I decided to place bioflux on the belt instead as it lasts much longer. This seems to work pretty well as I am seeing less nutrient spoilage as a result.

I think this design also looks nicer so that is a bonus.

Power generation
Starting off, after landing on Gleba, you will need some sort of power infrastructure to power mining drills, inserters, roboports and assemblers. It is recommended to have some production line setup for landfill and some concrete because you will be needing a good amount of it here.

Unfortunately solar efficiency is at 50% so you would need a lot of it if you want to go down that route. The alternative is to drop down a bunch of rocket fuel until the factory becomes self sufficient.

I opted for using rocket fuel to power the factory until it became self sufficient with the following setup.
The idea behind this design is to keep the temperature at 750 degrees before more fuel is added as without this limit, the inserters would just keep dumping fuel into the heating towers until your entire stockpile is exhausted.

There are two types of heating towers here. One powered by rocket fuel and another powered by spoilage and excess seeds. Rocket fuel was the preferred fuel of choice as it is relatively easy to make on this planet.


The second type is for getting rid of excess waste and seeds to a point. These towers are designed to burn off excess seeds above 1k of each type in the logistics network. It is also burns off excess spoilage greater than 10k in the network. Why keep so much spoilage? It is just a thing to ensure the smooth startup of the entire system. Once the system is running, it will consume spoilage like no tomorrow to produce carbon -> carbon fiber and sulfur.


I have added blueprints for the full block as well as individual sections so that you can add sections your needs change. Be sure to add plenty of fluid tanks to store the excess steam to act as power storage in the event you run out of fuel temporarily or need a sudden surge of power.
Fruit farm
When starting off, the level of production of the two fruits is generally speaking pretty low. You will want to have about 2-4 agricultural towers fully populated for each type of fruit with minimal grow spot wastage where possible to ensure the smooth running of the factory. It is difficult to find the perfect placement spots when starting off but as you harvest and consume more, you can get more seeds which will allow you to expand the growing area.
Nutrient cells
The idea behind this factory design is to have many autonomous groups of machines doing their own thing. Key design ideas behind making each cell
  • the food (plant materials) the cell consumes and produces does not cause the cell to permanently get into a stuck state
  • the cell is able to dispose of it's own waste by letting the logistics bots take it away (need to make sure there is plenty of logistics network storage chests)
  • if the cell dies, it needs to be able to automatically revive itself in the event that there is no nutrients in it. Spoilage is now super important as it helps restart the entire system.
  • for some basic material production cells, it is expected that they will eventually get clogged when too much iron/copper/sulfur is produced but that is by design. They should auto revive and resume operation when enough of the raw materials are taken out of it by the logistics network
  • the entire factory should be able to recover when lacking either of the two input materials.

For each nutrient cell, running along the outside will be a belt with both types of fruit on it separated by type on each sde. This can be a loop around the entire system but be sure to have inserters extracting any spoilage from it in the event that things spoil. On the inside, I recommend having a loop where the bioflux is placed Also make sure you have inserters extracting any potential spoilage. Towards one end of the loop, I added a buffer chest to pickup some of the bioflux for off-planet use.


As you progress, you will get access to faster and faster belts and inserters. It is beneficial to have faster belts as it helps with getting materials to the machines faster. Be sure to upgrade inserters as well so that they can keep up with the belts.

As a general idea, my factory consists of the following nutrient cells

  • 6 rocket fuel

Nutrient cell - Bioflux
One of the most important cells in the factory. This cell is responsible for producing the bioflux that feeds all the other cells. It is also responsible for exporting a trace amount of nutrients to revive any cells that may have been inactive or has run out of nutrients. Just need to make sure you have enough spoilage in the logistics network. The more of these you have, the easier it is for the entire system to restart each other should there be a mass cell die off.
Nutrient cell - Rocket fuel
Now that we have some bioflux going, we now need to have some sustainable way to power the factory so we need a bit of rocket fuel production.


Starting off, one or two of these cells should be enough though having more is better but might need more bioflux cells to support more.
Nutrient cell - Biochambers
Once some basic nutrient production and rocket fuel production is up, you are probably running low on biochambers to build more cells. So time to automate that.
You will need a bunch of iron plates, landfill and green circuits brought in by logistics bots to sustain this cell.

Key thing with this nutrient cell is to manually stop this before the number of machines clogs up the belt (or if you run out of the construction materials) otherwise you might need to deal with a few stray pentapods. Before that happens, just take the eggs out to stop the production then build a science cell and put the eggs into it to ensure you have access to eggs indefinitely.
Nutrient cell - Agricultural science
The main reason why we are here on Gleba. This cell also serves as a way to make sure we have access to pentapod eggs by constantly making more. There is purposely more science assemblers than pentapod egg production to ensure that we never get excess eggs on the belt but just in case, we have turrets to babysit them.
Nutrient cells - Iron and Copper
Now that the most important cells are in the system and after building a few more bioflux and rocket fuel cells, it is time to make the factory build itself. To do that, we need it to produce some iron and copper ore. Pretty simple, just add 1 or 2 of these each.

These two are prone to getting clogged up but they automatically recover as ore is used up so there is nothing to worry about there. It'll fix itself with time.
Nutrient Cells - Plastic, Sulfur and Lubricant
To sustain rocket launches, we will need a little bit of blue circuit production (and red circuits), so the next step will be plastics and acid. If you are not shipping the engines in, then you will need a bit of lubricant as well to make electric motors for the rocket silo and more bots.

Finally the last unique machine available from Gleba, the stack inserters. Unless you need a crazy large amount of them made, one cell should be enough. To make those, you need a bit of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is also used for rocket turrets and a few other things later too so it is probably a good idea to make a few of those.
